05.13.2018:
CVH #7
WWSS Medicine Man
Speick AS

A nice evening shave for a change. Doug (DKeester) has sent me a few razors to hone, and the CVH was indeed a challenge only in the fact that the steel is so hard. She had a decent enough bevel, so the dilucot and ark treatment went very well. Overall she is back up to CVH standards with an A+ edge to my face anyway, hope Doug agrees as well.

the Medicine man is very nice, good performance and provided plenty of nice lather for the 3-pass DSBBS shave. Finished off with the last remaining remnants of a bottle of Speick I have coffined, so I guess I need to go shopping, LOL.

Hope all you "muthas" had a nice mothers day with family.

Set-up:

Monday's Shave:

Admiration 5/8
Omega 6292 Silvertip
WSP Neroli Shave Soap
Royall Mandarin Aftershave
Tom Ford Neroli Portofino EdP

Another razor from the Honing requested by Doug. Today's offering a very nice Admiration made by "The Halma" Shear Razor works out of Solingen. these are great little shavers and remind me of the Genco Easy aces, in both honing and shaving.

This was a complete progression from bevel set to Trans Ark and WOW what an edge she took. A very nice, very thin bevel, set the stage for a smooth and very keen shave today. I think Doug will very happy with this one, and LOL, it is a hard razor to mail back to him without wanting to keep it. One more razor to go and back to my stable of razors. Always fun to try new things.

Not much needs to be said on the software today. All have been used before and always a tremendous summer shave. The razor provided another DSBBS today with the Royall Mandarin and TF Neroli, just making it perfect.

Have a Great day folks, and as always I will get caught up on the journals as soon as I can.

Good stuff Dave. I'm not hearing you mention those really expensive Shaptons much, you still using them? No reason to change things up if its working but I wonder if the process could be made faster if you included the Shaptons in the progression.

Great shaves. I am glad that my razors are working so well for you.

If you want to keep them an extra day so that you can shave with the Admiration again, feel free.

I am definitely looking forward to trying all three of them out. Thanks again for honing them for me.

Thanks Chris, I had been using the 1000 for a bevel set, but once I felt really good about the Coti I started doing everything on it. It would indeed probably speed things up, I may have to try that, I considered even selling the Shaptons, but I have the holder, the lap pool and everything, so with that investment I keep resisting letting them go, LOL

Torrey 6/8 smiley
Sorrentino Luca Brasi / Envy Silvertip
Truefitt & Hill 1805 Shave Soap
Truefitt & Hill 1805 Aftershave

Last shave with the Honed razors for the week. Today's offering a nice little 6/8 Torrey with a bit of a smile. Smileys have always been really fun to hone and this one was no exception. It does have quite a bit of "dalmationing" going on , but nothing through and through yet that I could see, so she took an edge very well.

The 1805 is a nice aquatic and perfect for a warm day. It provided a nice slick surface to the test shave, and typical of all British soaps ( except for Arlington ), it needs a bit of hand holding to get right. Fortunately the Luca Brasi was the extra "ace" in the hole to get the soap perfect.

3-passes today and the Torrey is ready to go home, and shaved the best of the three surprisingly as nothing usually beats a good Heljestrand. DSBBS (G) 4 today and finished up the the 1805 splash and nothing else as it was all that was needed.

Also this was a good point to compare the two salves I have been using post shave. Both made by Lucky Tiger, one being the "Disappearing Cream", the other "Vanishing Cream". Both boast Mint, Menthol, and Aloe Vera, however the winner here is clearly the Vanishing. More mint less menthol and a better over all face feel with a post shave cold towel, and cold water rinse.

Both are GREAT choices is an aftershave salve if used as described below, but the Vanishing is a little less intense and seem to have a bit more Aloe and the mint is tremendous. So once the other tub is finished, It will be the "green stuff" of the vanishing cream.

Lucky Tiger Salve (Disappearing or Vanishing) usage that seem to work best, at least for me

  • When you 1st receive the salve take a knife or fork and whip it up. this will ensure a creamy finish and less granular particulates that seem to harden over time and shipment.

  • Post Shave, take a dollop and place in palm and schmere a bit. On a wet, post cold water rinse face, use your index finger to take a small amount and place on cheeks, chin and neck and massage in well. Face should be shiny at this point.
  • Take a cold wet, or even refrigerated towel and place on the face & neck for a few minutes.
  • Do a final cold water rinse & pat dry, before placing favorite AS/Balm.
You will find you face feels much better overall IMHO, and just FYI if you are interested in trying.

Set-up today:

Hope everyone has a great day!

Great shaves and stunt shaving with the trifecta! The Croton Egg Factory is quite close to me and they produce upwards of two million eggs a day! And probably 11 million tons of poo....

Yeah, that Torrey is a good razor. I especially like the funky pinning on the scales. Since it was my first straight, I destroyed the edge. It will be nice to have it back in fighting shape.

Great reads, Dave! Now that you've really gotten good with your honing regime, perhaps you should do what CBL mentioned and try a razor with the Shaptons, then finish with the Ark. Might be interesting.
