Burl is truely amazing stuff. I have found a few other woods that have similarly unique grain patterns and/or reveal an unusual beauty when finished...but none come close to what actual burl can produce. *Disclaimer, it is possible the "other woods" that I have seen and worked with where actually some form of burl, i purchased smaller chunks for specific projects and did so purely based on the images I saw without knowing much about the source.

I wonder if a handle could be made with the wood retaining more of its vibrant orangish-red hue before being dried and cut

I'm with you, Chris! There's nothing quite like it.

I have to be careful what I do until I have surgery, but I'm still in my studio and shop as much as possible. I taught a studio photography class recently that was sold out. We had a gorgeous model for class. Here's one of my images, which I've entitled Tosca, Sei Tu!
