An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

There may or may not have been interrogations. There may or may not have been a bit of exessiveness. Mike may or may not have a few new pigs on his property... I can neither confirm or deny anything. 🤫🤣

America's now safer, that's all I'll say 🤫

I enjoyed the show as well. Had a few seasons on DVD and would binge. A few hours of that and I'd want to go hunting down Bad Guys.

The funny thing is, this stuff is happening and most don't pay attention enough to see it. My wife always comments on how I "see" everything, but I like to call that situational awareness.

I was driving down the highway once and I saw this Saab fly by me in the passing lane at a really high rate of speed, hit the brakes laying smoke then slid through a U turn on the highway and then across all 3 lanes on the opposite side of the highway then down an exit ramp. I was clapping because that was some serious driving and then a black smoked-out SUV comes flying by and does a similar maneuver except going down an on ramp on my side of the highway. This was many years ago when I was younger and had seen a lot less of the world, but dang, what was happening there? The driving was too good to be some idiot trying to outrun the cops and that SUV had no lights flashing but was clearly some sort of government vehicle. All these years later there's more clarity.

Just so ya know, I got away safely...........................

Little bit of a reflective entry today.....

When I got into wet shaving I had 3 goals:

1) A smoother shave (BBS at a minimum)
2) A longer lasting shave (I don't want to be scratchy at 5pm)
3) A less irritating shave (little to no redness to deal with)

If I couldn't achieve those 3 goals my thoughts were "Then why bother with all this." Shaving wasn't and still isn't a hobby for me, but more of a practical art. I wanted BBS or I really couldn't see a reason for ditching the carts and diving into something that takes more time and more frigging around in the morning.

Dealing with some fresh irritation since getting my new Feather blades got me to thinking about something KJ @Spider said in one of his recent posts. He said he very rarely goes for a 3rd ATG pass because of the irritation opting for a great feeling 2 pass shave. My thoughts privately were that it's fine for KJ, but for me I'd loose 1 & 2 just to get 3 (from goals above). It just didn't seem to be a good trade-off to me. The irritation was getting hard to work around due to having to shave every day for work so I decided to apply a little of KJ's wisdom.

I finally settled on an every other day schedule. clean, close 2 pass shave and then a 3 pass shave the next day without any clean-up - take what you get and be done with it. I ditched the AS lotion and just opted for a healthy splash of WH after a cold water rinse. I could still get a DFS / BBS- with the two passes if I did them correctly, but better yet, my shaves felt better.

Post shave felt dry without the lotion, but one thing I've noticed with me is that AS lotion tends to magnify any sort of redness I might have no matter how great it feels to put on. Just a theory, but I also think the lotion settles into the pores and makes the cut stubble stand up straight and feel rougher. I'm now getting full post-shave soap feel and it's much smoother / silk-like and much more pleasant than the feel with AS lotion which is more of a greasy/shiny feel. So, what KJ said has some real benefits. Walking away sub-BBS but feeling great has it's benefits. It's worthwhile sometimes to re-evaluate your shave process, especially when you are as new to it as I am. I'd say listen, try, and be open to what others are doing, especially mammoth painting

Mammoth Painting Update (Sponsored by @NurseDave)

So anyone following this journal knows I'm 100% shower shaving lately for like the last 4 months or so. This cramped my mammoth painting and I've been trying different things to come up with a suitable process for the shower shave. I've finally nailed it down.

1) Take that left-over shaving soap and lather up those chest hairs ( I also lather up my fully shaved face as well)

2) Let it sit there until you've cleaned all your shaving stuff

3) Just wet your hand and wipe off the lather. Don't rinse it off in the shower water or you won't get much lasting scent if any.

It's that simple. Mammoth Painting on the go with the quick and easy shower shave. Yesterday I was doing some heavy labor at work and got a little hot and boy does the soap scent start wafting around!

Not that I would want to interfere with your “thing”, but you do know use of EdP and such is another way to maintain a nice scent through the day.

Dovetailing off @NurseDave comment on just wearing EdP or cologne......I once restored an old red cedar trunk. It had lost it's cedar smell for the most part so I sanded it and that helped in a minor way so I went & bought cedar oil to condition the wood with. Yes, that did bring the cedar smell back but it wasn't the same as the original smell and it fades quite easily.

One observation I have with mammoth painting is that the scent of the soap seems to incorporate its self into you because, well it permeates your chest hair. When your body heat rises, the scent multiplies. I find EdP and colognes are much like the cedar oil I spoke of above while mammoth painting is more like the original cedar I spoke of above. There's a big difference in my experience.

There's a guy in my office that's not a wet shaver but must have a bat of Polo cologne that he's lowered into and then drips dry before getting dressed. Wherever this dude goes, he "stinks" up that area to the point where he's the butt of many jokes around the office. I don't mind the scent, but I think you shouldn't smell someone until you are in their presence like standing there talking to them or beside them. That's just my personal opinion. Mammoth painting allows that kind of effect consistently. Glugs of AS or sprays of EdP/cologne tend to overpower and then fade. I hope this clarifies things a little bit on the mammoth painting.

The other important aspect of mammoth painting is that you are using the leftover lather for something vs. just rinsing it down the sink drain. Why not?

You caught me...that's all me bro!

A quality EdT or EdP has the same effect of mammoth painting. Not pushing it as you gotta do what YOU want Mike. Just letting you know a good cologne doesn't fade away. The ones I've been using are sensed more when working and body heat rises as you described or if I smell my arm where I hit so I can get a wiff when I want if I've been too lazy to activate it at the moment 😂 Mammoth Paint on Mike (y)

100%!

2-4 spritzes of a good cologne, in the right spots, will have you smelling good all day long! Sometimes I’ve let a spritz of a high end cologne sit on a layer garment (sweater, shemagh, etc) for a week or more and the scent is still pleasantly detectable!
