An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

I know a guy that's got all the gear he could have loaned you to climb up and top it. Then it would have went anywhere you wanted it to go.

Another option if you find yourself in that situation again is to cut a pocket on the back side, then use a bottle Jack between a couple steel plates. Will make a back leaner fall where you want.

Yeah all that would have been handy. I've seen the bottle jack trick but didn't have one of those either. I thought about several unsafe ways to achieve the same result, but the tow strap seemed the safest option. I joked with my wife that in my younger years I would have just climbed up the tree until she started to go riding it down and jumping off and clear at the last minute. Me thinks I'm much older and wiser now  Being part terminator now, I'd hate to screw the new hip up.

I like to use a come along over a vehicle when I have the choice. I still use them a lot when I do tricky drops near houses or something.

My tree-climbing days are behind me. We have some trees towering over the house that need some trimming, but I'm going to pay a tree service to do it. I haven't done it enough to trust my ability to do it well.

One of the last ones I did was a big pine. I limbed it on the way up and at about 70 feet I topped it. The top was roped to the tree for a controlled fall. They call that the tree worker's convertible. Take the top down and go for a ride.🤣
I ride it probably about 5 feet back and forth. Not a big deal, they do that sometimes. The big deal was on my way down...... I took a few short logs off on my way down then got to the bottom with about 15 feet still standing. I went to plunge cut the base and my saw just sink right in... the whole thing only had about a half of an inch of good wood. The rest was all rot.
That gives you a warm fuzzy feeling.

Dang man, that will make your wee wee tingle a bit seeing that! You get a lumberjack stamp on your man card Shawn! Reminds me of this big dude I once detained. The guy went right with me with no problems and when I got him back in my office I did my thing and then the authorities came and searched him finding a 6 inch fish fillet knife tucked in his pants. We weren't allowed to search subjects unless something was in obvious sight and had to wait for local authorities. Yeah, I got that warm fuzzy feeling knowing he could have done some serious damage with that thing.

We decided to just order some new Feather DE blades. I really love those things and we got them on Amazon for the going rate. Then I got worried about them being fakes, but so far they seem to live up to the quality of the Feather's I've used in the past. What's great is that I can get 7 shaves out of them and then my wife can use the blade for another 2 weeks. She prefers that I "break" them in. No problem, I'll take one for the team  I've been getting some great shaves with the new Feather blade and my MW Irish Traveler soap. Love that scent!

On the personal side of things, seems I've been busier than a cat in a litter box lately! We've been getting some snow at my place. It's almost every other day we have to clear snow and then we get freezing rain / ice in between.

I went over to the cabin this weekend to rake the roof and just sit out there absorbing the quiet. I'll tell you there's nothing so therapeutic as the quiet a fresh thick snow produces in the winter in the woods. It's a "thick" quiet. Seeing fresh fox tracks I tried to call him in with a wounded rabbit cry but he must have been busy elsewhere and didn't show himself.

Sunday I ran into a guy I know who's 83. He's downsizing and heard I love old tools and said he'd like to give me a bunch of them. 😲 I couldn't say "Yes" quick enough! I told him I'd put those tools back to work and it warmed his heart as he wanted them to go to a good home. I'm thinking when I'm too old to forge metal anymore that I'll do the same to some lucky young man trying to start out in the hobby unless I'm eating cat food and need the money  I'll make some time to link up with this guy and help give his tools a new home. What a blessing for me!

Nice score on the tools!

Hows the cabin holding up so far?

The cabin has been holding up really well. Dry inside and I've been raking the snow off the roof until I decide what I'm going to do with some load issues involving the roof. I think it would be fine for my lifetime, but I want to be sure this thing is standing in 100 years. Raising it up a ways off the ground has helped keep everything dry as far as the OSB sheathing goes. So far, I'm pleased. Even the windows the previous owner put in wrong have kept the weather out just fine.

This year we will focus on finishing the outside and getting a wood stove that won't drive us out of there. It only takes a tiny wood stove to heat that small of an area. I'll be going to a local lumber yard to have them ship lap some hemlock that I could slap up on the outside and stain to a color we like.

Sounds like the Cabin is hold up great! I'm sure there will eventually be some really great stories of days spent out there!

If we get to 400 members will you paint the TSC logo on it?

Hmmm, possibly a sign I could hang on the outside when members are coming over for a visit. It'll turn into the official clubhouse whenever two TSC members are present there  Right now I'm leasing the cabin to some government guys who come and go at hall ours of the night so I'll have to clear it with them first. Lots of cut zip ties on the floor after they leave, not sure what they are doing in there :cool: Not really, but did I get you going?

For sure. My wife and I talk all the time about how it will be tough some day to leave the cabin and go back to normal life even though it's only a 5 minute walk to the house. We want to finish it all right away, but the money is just not there until we get the land paid off. We'll do what we can each year and try to do the inexpensive things. There's lots we can do that doesn't cost much or would be nearly free to do.

For a minute there I was wondering...
