An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

I have tried a shower shave with a DE and honestly i didn't have any major differences in results but I do like to use my SRs when i'm not just barely awake and i am NOT taking one of those in the shower.

@MaineYooper You have asked an Excellent question. @Blade-meister ,AKA the Chief Mammoth Painter, explains it best.

Dare I ask, What is mammoth painting?!

I'll give you the short version of mammoth painting:

You take your left over shaving soap and paint it on your chest hair, rinse with cold water, and enjoy the scent all day. The mammoth part comes from the fact that I have a thick carpet of chest (not as bad as some people) so I joke that this process is painting the mammoth. It's kind of a joke and I take some light picking for it which I don't mind, but it works! Some soaps work better than others, but the cold water rinse is the key otherwise the soap is gone. If you have no chest hair...........sorry, no reindeer games for you

Seriously though, why wash all that good soap down the drain when it could be used to make you smell really good? I've even taken note that when you start to sweat, the scent starts really taking off. So.....that's mammoth painting in a nutshell. If you read through my journal you'll find a more detailed instruction on the process. Try it, the worst that can happen is that you won't like it.

I take the Kamisori in for shower shaves all the time. I only use it for under the nose, but you just have to....well....um.......be extremely careful. When done, it goes outside the shower. I don't want to bump into it to see it flipping around in the air  I'm thinking I'd like hot water shaving now and perhaps if you hot water shave now Kyle that's why there wasn't much of a difference.

I'm Cold water all the way. Every once in a while if i have the time i will do hot water with a hot towel and everything but most of the time Cold water is where its at. that being said in AZ cold water is more like luke warm water so yeah, that's why the menthol soaps come out in force!

Thanks for explaining this to me! Unfortunately, I only have a little mouse hair over the sternum. It all migrated north to my nose! I hope there are no plans to colonize my ears! [emoji2957]

Mouse painting it is! Seriously though, try it anyways. There's a reason the body soap we use leaves a scent, so the chest hair may just give it holding power and more longevity. The way I look at it, it's going down the drain anyways so what can it hurt to soap up the chest and even the arms. I don't recommend painting the nose hairs though :ROFLMAO: Who doesn't soak up that last bit of gravy on their plate with a roll at Thanksgiving? That little bit of soap left is just like the gravy on the plate.

Seems a little debate over hot vs. cold water shaves erupted. All I can say is that outside the shower, it's cold water all the way. I have well water so I get 52 degree water out of the faucet which is good and cold. Hot water outside the shower just left me with irritation. Having shaved with cold water for a while now I can say it actually feels refreshing to me. At first the cold water felt terrible and wrong, but the more you do it the better it feels.

On the personal side of things, I had to go out to the cabin and rate the roof after we got a foot of heavy wet snow. This underscored the need for a pair of snow shoes and a trail needing to be cut from the house to the cabin. The road in would be pretty hazardous without tank tracks when you have snow and ice on it. I could make it up in, but I worry about sliding down the hill on the way out. Heading out there also reminded me of something........I have another "house" now to maintain and care for. Hadn't thought of that. It was very quiet and peaceful out there though. With fresh snow it is so quiet in the woods. It will be nice someday to start a fire in the stove and hang out in the cabin. So....I'm in the market for a decent pair of vintage wooden snow shoes with raw hide webbing if anyone wants to get rid of a pair. I swear that 12 inches of snow multiplied into 18 inches in the woods.

Mouse painting :ROFLMAO:

Good report Mike! Sounds like the cabin is weathering it’s first winter well so far!

Yeah, I'm glad I corrected many of the building issues. The guy had 2x4 rafters which would have eventually failed under snow load. I put in 2x6's so it should be fine for a lifetime.

I guess at least you have yourself a resting spot now after you hike in.

You are right about that. It will be all the better when I can start a fire in a nice cast iron stove and get some heat going in there, take off my winter jacket and wrap myself up in the fully tanned elk hide I intend to move out there. Oh yeah, or I could use the bear fur I have. I have some scraps of bear fur that I need to get going on and get my hat made so I can scar all my coworkers with it on cold days  So many projects, so little time. Maybe I'll take it to work and start sewing there. Nothing like have a office that smells of bear fur.

Oh yeah, almost forgot.........yesterday I used a boar brush for the first time. It was one KJ PIF'd to me this year and I really like it. With the shower shave it softened up the boar hair pretty well. I may just start using it more often. I like the stiffness of the boar hair.
Glad you're still using stuff from my PIF! Always enjoy hearing that.

I have a few soaps yet to try and one or two razors. I've really loved all of it. It was a great PIF. Every year at Thanksgiving we pull out a jar that contains all the blessings from that year so that we can truly give thanks. Your PIF was in there!

I’m honored!

This week I revisited the tuck of Personna blades I had kicking around. My first go around with the blade was a long while ago and it seemed like a very nasty blade. So I loaded one in and yeah, same result. It felt like a blade with too many shaves on it. I dialed the aggressiveness down on the Variant and that helped, but I wasn't buying that it was just an aggressive razor because I've used Feather's without this kind of level of discomfort. I put 4 shaves in with the first blade and then thought that maybe it was just a bad blade so I signed up for more torture and put another in the Variant. Same bad feel for 2 days so I scraped it for a Gillette Nacet. Instantly, the Gillette felt great so I know there is something wrong with this particular tuck of Personna blades.

I got to researching the issue and found that the white tucks with blue and white lettering had these issues but the Personna red blades did not. Apparently I'm not the only one who's had trouble with this particular colored tuck and many think that perhaps a bad batch or two got out. There were from a PIF, but I do not know who gave them to me.

Great shaves with the Nacet blade so far. Still shower shaves with Wild West soaps mostly.

On the personal side, my monthly gathering of flintknapping buddies had our Christmas party. Venison roast in the crock pot with potatoes, carrots, celery, and onions. Homemade bread and cookies on the side, great beverages, and some of the best eggnog I've ever tasted. It's a local variety that tastes like premium melted vanilla ice cream. None of us even got to flintknapping and just sat around talking and laughing. Nights like this are just a shot in the arm in a good way.

Many Indian tribes had man lodges and women lodges where the men taught the boys and young men and the women taught the girls and young ladies. I'm convinced more than ever that this separation and time with each sex was very good for the well-being of all. I don't mean this in any offensive way. I just think our society in general is lacking this time and nights with knapping buddies just underscores the need for guy-time and I feel recharged / very happy the next day. In this era of all inclusiveness and push for equality I think we've lost a bit of our male and female identities. It's not a bad thing when guys get together and do guys stuff or when women get together to do gal stuff.
