I thought today I'd share some thoughts on what is working for me with the shower shaves. It's been almost 2 solid weeks of shower shaves and I couldn't be happier. I'm getting away with no ATG passes and still am DFS+ in most areas with a few being in the BBS range. Now mind you I'm still doing 3 passes including WTG, XTG east to west, with a final XTG west to east. If I want to catch the dolphin I can go a 4th pass - all with way less issues than cold shaving outside the shower. So here's some observations I'll share:
1) Thick Lathers. What would be too dry outside shaving at your sink is perfect for shower shaves. Too thin of a lather and the heat / steam of the shower can make it disappear or thin out way too much. If need be, go back for more soap.
2) Face Lather. When I attempted shower shaves before it was with a bowl of lather. This lather is too thin to work well. Face lathering allows you to have more control over the lather's feel on your face
3) Stiffer Brush: I find I like the stiffer brushes. They soften up in the heat of the shower. What's perfect for me at the sink seems too floppy in the shower. I have a boar brush I'll have to try!
4) Keep a Clean Razor: Even the best knurling isn't enough if the razor is really wet and soapy. It's tough to explain, but my razor seems more slippery in the shower than out. I think my hand is much wetter obviously, but you want to rinse that razor often to avoid the potential of slicing yourself in a place that would be hard to explain to an ER doctor.
5) Tallow Soaps: I find they work the best. They give the thickest and richest lather. I've tried the others and found the slickness just not as great. One of my favorites so far is the Wild West Billy The Kid tallow soap (even though he murdered a blacksmith once!)
6) Mammoth Painting: Well gents, it isn't as effective to mammoth paint in the hot shower. Preferring tallow soaps, I think the hot water melts away too much of the good stuff to make it worth painting. The shower shave could make mammoth painting go extinct. Alas, the work around is just saving the soapy brush to mammoth paint at the sink with a cold water rinse. On a side note, my wife smells my shaving soap all the way at the other end of the house when I shower shave so this is a bonus I think.
Post shave can be what you want it to be. I usually leave my face wet then go for the WH as soon as possible. I follow up with an AS balm and feel like a million dollars.
If you haven't tried the shower shave in a while or ever, why not? It could just be another skill in the toolbag to pull out when you need a quick and effective shave.
