An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

Nurse Dave approves all this manly content.

Pheeew! I was hoping approval would be stamped on this entry.

I have begun to wonder if there's some certification procedure required to chime in (do men "chime in"?) here? Not in any real concerned way, . . . just curious. lol

Nope, just jump right in. We are all one big happy family here.

Mike and Chris @GearNoir keep talking turns holding any man cards we get stripped of.......

I've come a long way. I got my stripped for admitting to using a Venus cartridge once. I only get to hold onto the man cards that Chris doesn't want anymore so I only have a few

2 mornings in a row I've woken up to snow that needed to be shoveled. It's too early for it, but I'm hoping for a warm-up back in the 40's so I can forge a little bit. Below 40 and the forge just fights the cold. It was 16 degrees this morning at my place.

In the shaving world, I've been getting some great shaves. Adding the extra pass West to East has helped improve my shaves. I think my ATG pass was taking on too much growth. Currently I'm trying to kill every container of MW soap I have and I've been told not to order anymore until after Christmas. I'm down to "rings of desperation and despair" in the bottoms of my soap containers. The WH has been really feeling good.

A funny story about shaving......my daughter climbed up on my lap and took a big whiff of my chest area and said "Mmmm, Daddy you smell great.....you smell like the hotel!" I was wearing Pacific Rush AS so there you have it, hotels must clean with the stuff

On the personal side of things, Saturday was a busy day. I did brakes, rotors, and put on the snow tires for our SUV and then went up to my parent's house and got my Dad's snow blower on. To my surprise, he was digging in a drawer and pulled out a brand new impact wrench (think the thing that takes lug nuts off NASCAR race cars). He never used it and it will make my life easier working on our vehicle. Then I spot this double bit axe covered in dust and cobwebs in the corner of his barn. Now mind you, I've known it's been hiding there for years so I ask him what his plans are for it. He said he found it years ago and that I could have it. This thing is approaching something Gimli would be proud to carry. It's old too, but the handle is shot so this baby will get a new handle this winter for sure. The blades have a couple of minor chips out of them that will require a reprofile of the blades. I have to be careful though because they welded high carbon steel into a mild steel body back then so I can't take too much off the blade. I'll wait until I get this axe done and then show a picture of my antique hewing collection. I can't wait to put them to work making hand hewed logs from the property. I think I grew 4 or 5 more chest hairs just thinking about it

A truly beautiful shave this morning with MW Bay Rum. 20 degrees outside so I went out after my shave for some natural menthol on the face - boy that felt great. It reminded me of when I was on an intense workout that involved log PT. Cold mornings like that I'd be outside and my body would be creating steam! I so loved and hated log PT. It truly tested a man's resolve to hold it up when your arms were shaking. Sadly my shoulders can't take it anymore - too many miles on them and I want to avoid shoulder surgery because everyone I've known who's had it is never the same. Dang I miss it and the push-ups - loved both. Anyways, great shave this morning!

I ran into someone at work and found out he's halfway there. He uses shaving soap and a brush, but still uses cheap Aldi's disposable razors. He has this stone that he uses to resharpen them and loves it. I told him I think it's the excellent prep from the quality soap, brush & lathers, but he says he uses canned Barbasol and still gets great shaves. He said he bought a Merkur and it cut his face to pieces. I suspect he used cart pressure with the DE

Had my monthly gathering of flintknapping buddies last night. Man it's such a great time. Lots of stuff brought to show ranging from guns to porcupine quills. Lots of laughing, good food, and we actually managed to make some great arrowheads. The highlight was my buddy's recent purchase of an 1944 M1 Garand. This rifle saw action in WWII, Korea, and likely Vietnam before getting put out to pasture in the collecting world. When you hold something like that, you wish it could tell you all the stories of where it's been.

Believe it or not, I don't drink coffee. Love the smell of it, just can't stand the taste of it. I pulled 11-7 shifts at one point in my life and man I tried Mt. Dew, anything for a boost but finally just figured out how to stay awake.
I hated coffee too. Until I worked in a store with the warehouse guys. They'd all go on break to Nordstrom's when the store opened because they had a cafe there. If you're in the know, you would ask the people to heat up the bread pudding a little then pour some creamer on it. I used to get bread pudding and a Pepsi each morning. But I was poor and coffee was only .25 with free refills so I learned to put in enough sugar and cream that it was tolerable.

I also hated coffee, until Starbucks finally enticed me with one of their sugary treat drinks with a hint of coffee flavor offerings. Now, as long as I have a little creamer and sugar, I’ll drink it.

I've tried the flavored coffees over the years and they taste like coffee and whatever else they put in it. I don't get one flavor when I drink them. Some of these things I see people drinking are just Jim Dandy sundaes with some coffee in them. I think I decided if I couldn't tolerate black coffee or coffee with a bit of cream & sugar that I just wouldn't drink it period. I avoid dings on my man card by staying clear of the Jim Dandy sundae coffees  @GearNoir @NurseDave
