An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

That's pretty sweet that you sold all you brought. No higher praise than that.

He's like GD. Not able to scale more quantity 😋

Yeah, I wish I had more time to make more knives for this show. I had another "flintknapper" next to me too but his stuff was, well.........different so it didn't hurt me too much. I've always thought about these concepts when I do my work:

The Bitterness of Poor Quality Remains Long After the Sweetness of Low Price is Forgotten
I also like this tried and true one too:

I do try to offer a fair price for what I do so that my customers don't feel they've been the subject of a robbery and never do cheap & fast because I don't want my name connected with something that's not done to the best of my abilities.

That's smart. I always use @Dave in KY's name in those circumstances.

As promised, here's a picture of the finished American Themed knife. It turned out exactly how I pictured it in my mind. I also must give some credit to famed knife maker to special operators Daniel Winkler for inspiration on the wrap behind the guard. It's his signature feature on many of his Bowie knives and it solved some issues for me. I used pig intestine for my wrap - great stuff to use for hafting primitive stuff. So still look like bacon Dave @NurseDave ?

And here's a picture of the cabin with its roof finally on!!!!

The contractor also got the metal roof on the cabin. He did a great job. I can't tell you how relieved I am to finally have a finished roof on the cabin. This weekend I'll close in the gable ends and it will be mostly ready for winter.

Pictures of the cabin and that American knife will be posted this evening.
Kyle, I've enjoyed watching your cabin being built. Kind of like an old-fashioned barn raising. Looking forward to the pics.

I'm Mike, KY Dave's reference to Kyle probably threw you off ;) I'm glad you are enjoying them. I really wish this thing was built with post & beam construction, but yeah it's been a journey. I have a few more things to do and a lot of shoring up to do with the proper fasteners. Much of what the guy did who built it before I owned it was done with drywall screws. I've been replacing them slowly and trying to tighten the structure up overall.

Sorry, Mike. I think I knew your name once before, but obviously forgot. 😶

No problem Bruce, just thought I'd razz you a little

This morning I opened my cabinet with my shaving stuff in it and just happened to catch a look of the SE razor blades in the back that I won from one of KJ's big PIF's. I must admit, when I was using just DE's I got scary vibes from everyone but Shawn on the SE's being way more aggressive. Of course Shawn is the same guy that hopped up on my cabin roof and was just perched up there like it was nothing at all . Anyways I just decided to go for it. I mean, I'm using a SR so I should have not problem, right? I'd heard that the open combs are more aggressive so I passed up the gold GEM and grabbed a silver GEM that wasn't an open comb. I loaded the SE blade & made for dang sure it was in there and properly straight.

First WTG pass with MW Bay Rum soap and it felt really mild but really cut amazingly. After a rinse it felt like a shave with my Variant set at about 2.5 - 3.0. I decided that maybe I need to give it a chance with all 3 passes. 2nd XTG pass went well, but again felt really mild compared to my Variant's normal setting of 4.5 - 5.0. On the 3rd ATG pass I started with the SE GEM but it felt like it didn't even have a blade in it so I brought out the Variant and yeah, there was still plenty to cut at the 4.5 setting so I finished the shave with the Variant. I did use the SE for clean-up and it really did very well. I ended up with a BBS+ without any irritation at all.

If it makes any sense, I really felt the SE cut the stubble cleaner than a DE blade. This makes me wonder if the DE blades don't move microscopically when they hit the resistance of the stubble whereas the SE blade is solid and just mows right through the stubble cleanly. Whatever it is, there is a difference I could perceive in how it cuts. I'm going to look for a more aggressive SE tomorrow and give it a try again. Shawn @ShawnF was right.........again........and I should have tried the SE's earlier. I'm thinking once I find the right razor it will perform really well.

Before plunking down more money for another SE, why not use your current one for a week? Maybe it's just a matter of finding the best angle. Enjoy your shaves, Kyle Mike.

I agree, but I'm blessed with having a whole ziplock bag of SE's I've won through PIF's so I'll be trying them all and seeing how I like them. Shawn sent me some and I won some from one of KJ's PIF's. It will be interesting to see what happens. Perhaps I should keep trying this razor for a week in case I'm just not getting the angle right. Good point Bruce!

Classic SE razors definitely have thicker blades, which helps, though sometimes the clamp system holding them down doesn’t always pin it down ultra firmly.

You were using a very shallow angle right? With the top of the head almost touching your face?
