An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

Glad to hear the first go with the SR went well. I'm sure you will be doing full shave's in no time!

Also, The more hollow the razor grind the more audible feedback you tend to get.

Nice shave today Mike!

It’s unfortunate that folks have to go through such heartache and misery, but I guess that’s just a part of this life thing. I’m glad you’re in a better place and relationship now.

I really have to practice my holding techniques, but yeah late fall I hope to have more opportunities to relax and do a full SR shave.

Stumbled across this........What do you think KJ? @Spider

Where to start?? I'm sure he's talented, but he was playing very sloppy, and it really didn't sound good. I'm a big fan of bagpipes, and love it when someone can play rock music with it..... but he seemed to be using the band to cover up his playing. It was a distraction. He should be able to play the whole song himself, but he was only playing a part of it.

His mohawk was cool, but it was a bit sloppy as well.

Glad you are a fellow bagpipe lover.

I have a great respect for anyone who can play the bagpipe, let alone try to make rock music with it - not sure it was made for that. You are probably right.

I saw the mohawk and thought you might like it.

Had a great shave this morning other than a little too much clean-up. I got Kyle's SR out again and did a WTG pass as my first pass. I was so close to DBBS that I tried to get there during clean-up and ended up with a little bit of irritation but nothing bad enough really to complain about or give me redness. Bay Rum Mystic Water Soap and just a bit of Master Bay Rum AS sent me out the door feeling pretty darn good. I'll say that today is just about my one year anniversary in wet shaving. What a journey and I could never go back to shaving with a cartridge again. I've also managed not to break the bank on shaving stuff too. I'm perhaps an oddball in that I pretty much use the same brand of soap every morning and that same blade as well. I guess I don't really need the variety in my shaving that others do. That's ok though, winning the PIF's that I did certainly set me up well and so did all the little boxes and things that just seemed to pop up in my mailbox. I'm looking forward to seeing where I go with this in 10 years. Will I have a handlebar mustache and a custom built shaving den? Will I have a green mohawk? Will I be as cool a shaving dude as Shawn? Only time will tell.

On the personal side, Saturday was very busy. I had to teach a primitive skills class Saturday morning and the afternoon saw more work on the cabin. My flintknapping friend Bruce came by to help me out. We had to trim the rafter tails, put a fascia board on and then undo all the plywood that was up there. We got the plywood moved and in the correct position on the edge of the fascia board. Good thing, because it was slightly crooked when we installed it before so we would have started running at an angle. I found out that my hip doesn't like being on this steeply pitched roof so poor Bruce was up there hanging on with a wing and a prayer. It doesn't look steep from the ground, but you get up there and it's much different. Shawn just jumped up there and was squatting on it like it was nothing. He should get a stamp on his man card for that. We only got up the fascia and 4 pieces of plywood. We wanted to finish the one side, but we'd both had it by then. My hip doesn't like teetering on a ladder either. I plan on taking some time off this week to do more work Friday and Saturday. My wife and I will make the big push ourselves to get all the plywood on and the fascia on the other side. We are on borrowed time as far as the weather goes. You can't work on a roof if it's wet or raining. Having only the weekends to work on it I'm afraid that every one will be bad weather in October and I'll be in trouble if winter arrives and the metal roof is not up. My wife and I have a plan to go out and get something done each evening. Even if it's just one sheet of plywood or one piece of sheet metal, it's something toward a finished roof. Kinda reminds me of the struggle settlers must have faced when they arrived in this country back in the 1600's. I have it easy compared to them. but not doubt the weather worried them as much as it worries me. We've gotten 12 inches of snow on Halloween before so it's literally hammer time!

I'm caught up again.

Those were some harrowing insights from you and Bruce. I'm glad you guys turned out just fine, although I personally would've preferred you not have gone through that. (y)

Also, good on you for not diving into this hobby and breaking the bank. I sense that's not quite in your personality, and it's hard not to start buying things once you start reading the great things people have to say.

To another 10 years!

Good for you for keeping up with the journals! I gave up on it because of time constraints. Yeah, if I had the extra money I'm sure I'd buy a lot more stuff. With us having to purchase the land to move the cabin, things are super tight so I'll be using up all my soaps before buying anymore. That's a good thing though because I'm sure I have some PIF soaps in there that I'll like as I use them out of necessity:LOL:

Getting tired of being tired though. Trying to make stuff for my last show at night too so I'm super stinking busy.

Sounds like someone needs to upgrade to the pro hip made from titanium and the stuff that coats the starship Enterprise.

The doc tells me my hip is a titanium alloy. If they could figure out a polymer that wouldn't wear out for 50 years to put inside the cup device the hip would last a lifetime for most.

Roofs and mountain slopes ain't good for health hips. Take it easy Mike. Don't want to have to do it again 😉

I know. I really prayed hard for help and my wife called a contractor we know. We told him we only had $200 left and would he be willing to work Saturday for $200 worth of time and help me with the roof. She actually called a bunch of Amish workers in our area and I didn't have high hopes for the laughing responses that she'd get, but one guy actually called me last night and was very polite in how he said no. Then this contractor calls me back, asks a bunch of questions and says he'll come out and help me with the roof. My response was "You will!!!?". He's bringing scaffolding and has put many metal roofs on.....so wow! Big answer to prayer!!! I'm going to bust my hump to get most of the plywood up before Saturday so we can be laying metal roofing Saturday morning. I imagine I only have him for 3 or 4 hours at that tiny amount so I want him to get the metal roof started correctly so that I can just go from there. We might even get most of it done in that time. It really put the spring back into my step.

I forgot to mention this, but Saturday I did a one pass shave to get SAS before teaching the class. Since there was no chance of irritation I went for the Pacific Rush. Just as I was grabbing it a song from my long gone past sprung into my head "Bad medicine is what I need..." which is part of the lyrics of Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi. Pacific Rush lights me up after a decent 3 pass shave. After a one pass shave it felt really great chilling me pretty good. Funny how lyrics of songs from long ago just pop up at the right moment.

I don’t think I’ve heard of PR giving people a reaction before...that stinks! :(

Hope you can get that cabin buttoned up in time for real Fall weather! Cool that the contractor is willing to help some!
