An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

Congrats on sealing the deal with the land! And did you say shooting range? I see that I will be making a trip!

For the record...I use hot water and used to use a boar exclusively and have had absolutely no issues lathering Mystic Water soaps...this version, the last version, or any other version that I have tried.

There...now I feel pious! 😊

From what I can measure, I'd have about 180 yard max range. Not bad. Plenty of possibilities there. I was up there today pretty much the whole day. As a family, we started clearing the spot that we need to move the cabin to. I also had to secure the cabin against punks intent on skulduggery. Now it looks like someone doesn't want you in there vs. the way the other guy had it which said "Hey, if you are a young punk and want to come on in and raise heck, just walk on in!" I did see a big doe that walked by the cabin and lots of turkey tracks in the mud on my road going in. I have a lot of work to do. That forest hasn't been managed and I'd like to cut all the low branches up to about 10 feet so you can see through the woods - that's great for air movement and hunting. The whole time I was cutting trees and branches I didn't get bothered by bugs at all so I think the new cabin location is going to be great.

Congrats on the land buy!

I started my shaving with bowl lathering too, but once I got a brush that worked for face lathering I would up doing the 90% of the time and save the bowl for 'fancy' shaves. Now that I'm working on using a straight, I don't even do that. It's a process, when you get bored or frustrated don't fight it. It'll swing back around on it's own.

Anything you do on a nearly daily basis is going to have a dull point of two.

Thanks! The land seemed all the more sweeter yesterday when I was on it knowing it was mine. Well, I consider myself a steward of it and hope to make it a better patch of woods. I have a perfect area to plant and establish a blueberry patch, and I'd love to start a patch of ginseng. If you keep the woods trimmed and healthy it will thrive and wildlife will want to be in there.

I'm liking the face lathering a lot. I'm having trouble with it drying out on my cheeks which is why I'm getting some irritation there. I get it nice & slick and then it's like it dries just a tad bit past optimum. I've begun just dipping my brush in the water and re-lathering it when I feel that happening.

Wow, I finally slipped to page two of the journals

I've just been really busy cadre. Nights I just don't feel like jumping online. I'm still alive and kicking though! I went out and posted the new land which entailed carrying a ladder up and over and around the woods so that you can get the posted signs up high enough so that people can't just reach up and tear them down. I found two old pieces of farm equipment. One is a horse drawn hay rake which is pretty deteriorated except for the high carbon steel rakes which I can make knives out of. The other piece has some dumbell size solid metal wheels on a solid steel axle. This piece is also very deteriorated so I'm thinking of a good use for the huge metal wheels as they look pretty cool. I'm thinking counter weights to something.

I've also been researching the history of this parcel. I'm back to 1856 and am stuck because at that point the State of Connecticut seized the property for nonpayment of some debt by the owner. I cannot find an owner before that because there is no deed to that I can find to the state of CT. My parcel was part of the Boston Purchase in NY. This part of Central NY had a claim on it by the state of Massachusetts if you can believe that. My parcel, other than being dived into to pieces, hasn't changed at all over all those years. I'm working on piecing the ownership from 1856 until 1963. I'm up to about 1924 now but that owner traded a lot of land so there are a lot of deeds to read. I'm still in the quill pen book entry eras so the deed records are hard to read. The owner who had the land before it was taken for taxes never filed a deed so it's been a large investigation and I just love a good puzzle to figure out. I love history.

good to hear from you!

Heavy wheels you say? make yourself a treadle lathe! unless you already have a better lathe. then i have no ideas lol

Great idea Kyle. I'd like to get up there and cut those wheels off but they are above my carry weight restrictions due to the hip replacement. Nothing over 50 lbs.

Great two shaves (yesterday and today). Face lathering has been a game changer for me. I'm able to dial in the feel and slickness just how it needs to be. I think using the SR has made me really understand no pressure so when I do use my DE I'm getting improved shaves. Dang, I'm also saving a lot of time not bowl lathering!

This morning was one of those shaves where you feel like you could just keep shaving for an hour or more. It just felt really good and I just wanted to keep chasing DBBS but wisdom said stop while you are on a high note. BBS+ for sure

One other thing that I've changed lately is my post shave. Some may recall I was getting a lot of upper lip irritation. I really think that was being made a lot worse by the AS balm I was applying. I've stopped applying anything to the upper lip and it's gone. I find I can even sneak up on an ATG pass with my DE which never happened with the irritation. I also think using the SR has helped too. Stretching the upper lip with my DE always caused irritation but with the SR it just glides right over it nicely.

Nice entry Mike! Glad you’ve made some shave progress; it’s always nice to learn a new little trick to make them better.

I'd like to get up there and cut those wheels off but they are above my carry weight restrictions due to the hip replacement.

I don’t know about when you were younger, but wheels these days incorporate a special technology called “rolling” into their design. ;)

Hey! I just saw this pic listed by my local auction house for this weekend's auction. Thanks to your journal, I actually know what it is! LOL

Here's the finished swage block stand that a showed pictures of after just building it. I wanted to age it a bit so it matched all the other old tools in my blacksmith shop.
