2025 Eucris Lathering Challenge

24 Apr - Eucris test - Day 8

bowl lather, badger brush

I was a bit rushed this morning, so I didn't spend as much time building my lather as I wanted to. I added some glycerin to the bowl while making lather and it did seem to help thicken it up a little bit. First pass was a bit thicker on the face, and was slower to dissipate. Second pass was still pretty thin.

Ok.....now i'm wondering what to do. I soaked my puck chunk overnight on the first day of the challenge and all the glycerin oozed out of it.....should I add some back in when I lather to see if it improves the lather?

You literally said these two things 4 replies apart:

So…mix in some banana?

Guide to using Eucris

  1. Toss in trash

Needed to be out of the house early today so went for a quick set up.

Cube preshave
Damp brush, light load on a dry puck
Quick face lather with some pressing of the brush, didn’t concern myself about adding air

And

It’s the best lather I’ve gotten so far. Best explanation is that I effectively lathered the preshave and there happened to be a little Eucris soap on the brush too.

Ok. Something weird is happening, I’m making usable lather (with preshave).

Damp boar brush, dry puck. Loaded to a thick paste. Had put PAA Cube 2.0 on as preshave and did a face lather.

Wound up with fine usable lather.

Again, working theory here is that all benefit apart from slickness is due to the preshave product.

I wonder....is it possible to get the same results by putting the preshave product on the puck during loading?

Looks pretty good! I concur. 😄 our boy @uacowboy used Mitchell’s to the same effect. I theorize a really good lathering soap will have some “overhead” where it can absorb negative lathering influences from things like hard water, low amounts of product, etc. perhaps this overhead is enough so it treats the sodium in the Eucris as hard water and makes for a usable lather. The hard part will be quantifying (sciencing) this effect. My understanding of how soap works is not good enough for that. It just works out like that.

Hi Cadre!

They say only 3 things in life are certain: death, taxes, and the disappearing lather of GFT Eucris hard soap.

So I thought that for this April we could collectively try to tackle the problem of Eucris hard soap.

But I don’t own any!

Not a problem. I will send you some of my new unused puck, with the following rules:

1. Must sign up by March 21, so I can get it in the mail to you in time to start.

2. Must have 25 posts minimum, i.e. active on the forum.

3. Agree to be active in the thread, posting at least twice a week.

What’s going to stabilize the lather? Soaking the puck? Repeated use? Getting the amount of water dialed in just right? Preshave of some sort? Will it take a synthetic , Badger, or boar? I don’t know, but I hope that together we can figure it out!

The official challenge will start on April 1st!
I use the cream most of the time, call me crazy. Having said that, I feel like the game changer with Geo Trumper soaps is very hot water. I get a great lather when I take the time to get the water really hot. If not, it breaks and fast.

I also prefer the cream, but thought this group might have a chance at unlocking the secrets of lathering the hard soap.

How do you use the water once you have it? Like boiling water on the puck or soaking the brush in hot water? I’d like to give your method a try

Really hot to soak the brush, then wet the soap in the shower and lather up when it is time to shave. Good luck and happy shaves!

29 Apr - Eucris test - Day 9

bowl lather, badger brush

This being my birthday shave I was determined to get a good lather out of this stuff. I cracked the code on getting thick stable lather…. Sort of.

I lightly soaked the brush then loaded as much soap as I could. Then I wrung the brush into my lather bowl and loaded again. I put two generous squirts of glycerin in my bowl and lathered and lathered and lathered some more. Two more squirts, more lather…. Two more squirts, more lather…. I think I may have even added one more big squirt at this point. But the lather looked amazing.

Now the problem happened when I went to shave. My razor grabbed onto every single hair on my face and tugged and drug. This was unshavable! What I realized was I had added no water, aside from what little was in my brush from loading. They don’t call it wet shaving for nothing!! Lather is supposed to hold water. It was thick, but very unhydrated. I proceeded to add water a little bit at a time, but it quickly became a soupy mess. I’d add water then lather in the bowl for a full minute for it to come together. If I kept doing this, I maybe could have found a balance, but I didn’t really want to spend another 10-20 minutes on it. I got an acceptable pass from it, but finished the shave with another soap.

I agree, this soap is unlatherable!

Good luck and happy shaves!
