Rumour is that Somnos is thinking about straights

I met up with @Somnos today and word on the street is that he might be thinking possibly about perhaps trying a straight .... maybe. :p

What would you guys suggest?
- bloodthirsty shavette?
- Feather system?
- traditional straight?

Pros and cons of each?

Very early on you turned me on to the Feather system. It kind of sits in the middle ground between a traditional straight and a shavette. Like a shavette, it will punish you for poor technique. But not to the extent that a traditional shavette will. If you can master a Feather, you can shave with anything. The downside of that system is you can get really spoiled by the edge of a feather that can cause you to make bad mistakes when you transition into traditional straights.
The argument for traditional straights, is you can practice shaving with a completely muted blade before using a sharp one. It is a time honored system and legions of men have learned on naked steel. Problem is, it is possible to pick up bad habits if you use blades not quite ready for prime-time then run into one that was honed by the Doc then off comes the nose!

I began with a Sight Unseen and Poor Man’s kit from Whipped Dog. It was a fun experience, but once I picked up my folding Feather SS, it was game over for my other open blades. All the fun and convenience you could want. The skill acquired translates pretty well to a traditional straight if he’s ever ready to make that jump.

If you decide to go with a traditional straight I would recommend if possible a round point 6/8 wide blade. That's a good middle of the road size and a round point is less prone to letting the red water out.

Finally a sane answer...(wait, what am I saying...it’s a straight)...thank you Sir...of course my bride just finished asking me if I was kidding about a straight razor....shhhhhhhh.

I started my traditional Shaving adventure with a straight. Its mostly getting past the nerves and trying it. Once you accept that you are most likely going to bleed a bit it gets easier to try it.

I would say anyone who is considering trying straights they wait til the yard sale starts. I know of an owner is going to sell some at a killer price and honed!
Cool, maybe my chance to try a traditional straight again if I can keep the blade sharp and not roll it when stropping.........

I like shavettes for an intro to straights, because it gives you a chance to get the feel of how it works, without the maintenance costs and time. But you need to start with the right shavette.... especially if you want to transition to true straights. In my experience DE style shavettes are not what you should start with.

My favorite is the Weck Sextoblade. It uses hair shaper blades and really approximates the feel and shave of a real straight. They are vintage, And they can be picked up for a reasonable price on eBay or otherwise. Wecks have lots of fans.

The Feather AC is a great choice too, it gives great shaves, but the feel isn't quite the same as a real straight, and they are a bit expensive to get into.
