Strop Dragging My Journal Around...

Shave # - redacted -

Razor - Schick injector
Brush - Stirling boar
Soap - CBL Orange Dirt
After - Eleven orange

This was the same set up as shave # I have no idea (haha), and it is a winning combo!

I had been on a run of shaving every 3 or 4 days, which is pretty often for me...but this shave comes a little over a week after the last one, and so there was a fair amount of stubble to deal with - a fair amount of stubble to get caught between blade and body of razor...but because my two straights I have access to are currently away being honed, I chose the injector. It was a lovely shave, and Orange Dirt continues to impress.

I think I might have left the shaving for that long because I started back on chemo after a break for scans. The stuff really tires me out, and sometimes it's hard to get motivated to do much of anything when you're in the throws of side effects. My oncologist has recommended another 6 rounds, which is totally logical because my scan results showed that it is working...but it's hard to get back on the horse just the same. Adjusting back to it after a month off shouldn't be a big deal, but it takes a bit of a mental re-framing...

Today's listen is the fantastic Haim.

I came to this band in a rather circuitous fashion. A good while ago my wife and I finally got around to watching Liquorice Pizza, which is crazy because I'm a very big Paul Thomas Anderson fan...but life is life and all. In any case, we had never heard of the star of the film, Alana Haim, so looked her up. Oh, she's in a band... I searched on Youtube and clicked on the first thing that came up...which was this 14 minutes of them playing in the studio, shot by, you guessed it, PTA.

I was instantly hooked - great multi-instrument musicians who kinda sound like what you could imagine Fleetwood Mac might be doing right now if they were a new band. I actually ran into a middle aged dude at a record store two days ago wearing a Haim tee shirt and chatted with him about the show he saw - he was blown away by how good they were live. They are on my list now for sure...

That’s great music. I get your Fleetwood Mac reference; these women’s voices are THAT good. Off to YT I go!

I tend to be into slightly more "serious" music than Haim - but there is just a pop perfection to it, a playfulness that is build on solid writing and musicianship. It makes me really happy. The official videos for two songs from the album that I posted - Want You Back and Little Of Your Love - are totally infectious.

Shave # - somewhere up there

Razor - Schick
Brush - Stirling boar
Soap - CBL Fresh Lime
After - Eleven Orange

Well, this was an uneventful, in the best way possible, shave. The CBL lathered perfectly and gave me plenty of cushion to protect my cheeks and neck as I did a "leave the beard" shave on Friday. The scent of this soap just plain knocks me out, and pairs very well with the Eleven aftershave, leaving me fresh, citrusy, and BBS.

The shave was in preparation to go see a comedy show. Comedians Tim Heidecker and Greg Turkington have an ongoing, universe building bit/show called On Cinema At The Cinema. Ostensibly, this is a movie review show (much of the short, 3 or 4 minute episodes can be found on youtube), the joke being that both of them are inept at their jobs. But they have grown a multi-layered story on the edges of the review show, to the point where an incredible amount of drama has happened that bleeds into the real world. It is just masterful stuff. In any case, they did a live tour and finished the run here in LA. I had a very rough week of chemo treatment, and so while it was a challenge to go out for the night, it was a very nice reward for the harsh side effects. Laughter being the best medicine and all that cliched bs, haha...

The soundtrack was The Black Pumas. This is so damn good. Anyone who loves 70s soul should really check these guys out. It is "new" music - I think this album is from 2019 - and it somehow manages to sound modern and classic all at the same time. A fave album I can't get enough of...
