TSC Watch List

This is NOT my watch - I tried it on at an Omega dealer not that long ago...

The Speedmaster has been a bit of a dream watch for me...I don't want to say "grail" watch, because I think that implies that I only have one and then my quest would be over...and I am too much of a watch lover to feel that way. But it is a watch that I adore.

This Omega is the new(ish) First Omega In Space (FOIS) - a watch that they introduced as reissue I believe in 2012 or so. That version, which was a tiny bit different, was a limited run...but this new one is in their standard line.

I was drawn to this version (drawn to try it on a chat with the sales guy) because the diameter is smaller than the standard Speedmaster. The Speedy is 42mm, where as this FOIS is 39mm. As a guy with smaller wrists, I was excited about the idea of a Speedy that really fit me well.

But...an interesting detail about the difference between the two is that the lug to lug on the FOIS is actually LONGER than it is on the Speedmaster. This is a measurement that I think a lot of people consider secondary when thinking about whether a watch fits them well or not (and this is a totally subjective area we're talking about), but lug to lug has a huge impact on fit.

I look at this pic and this watch looks big on me. "Too big"? That is open for interpretation...but it wasn't the slam dunk I had hoped for, not that I have $9000 or whatever it is lying around just waiting for a watch purchase. It is a lovely lovely watch...but might just not be my #1 obsession after trying it on.

My one true vintage watch - the Benrus GG-W-113.

This was a birthday gift from my wife on my 50th - a birth year watch.

These watches, contracted to Hamilton, Benrus and I believe at least one other, were military issue watches, I think beginning with Vietnam. There were a couple different designations, based on the movements. My understanding is that the GG-W-113 was the higher end of the two, given that the movement hacks - meaning when you set the time the seconds hands stops - which was imperative for people like pilots to exactly time mission movements with crew.

In any case, I love it. This specific watch, issued in October of 72 is late in the war, but may have seen action. It’ in really good shape for being 53 years old (better than me!), and though they are traditionally worn on a nato strap, I kinda love it on this leather - makes it a little less specifically military in look.

An iconic and a very special watch! It is in beautiful shape as well.

Has the movement been serviced?
