Numbers in our province (Ontario) are basically at all time highs the past few days and I had to go for groceries today, hitting two stores close to home. One was good in terms of spacing and people, while the other was way too packed, especially given our CV numbers and the fact that we seem to be just about ready to go into lock-down again. No shame in me saying that I felt more than a little anxious in the second store.

My wife was notified yesterday that she'll be WFH for the remainder of 2020; that's a good thing in both our our books.

I honestly couldn’t tell you what our current or prospective situation is in my county let alone the State of California. On one hand our county numbers are down and by all graphical/numerical representations we compare favorablY to how we looked in May. This includes infection and hospital admission numbers. The derived metrics and graphs are harder to follow because they have a lag time built in and a lag in reporting (a figure based on a 7 day average is taking an additional 7 days to be reported) so we never really know what they are telling us in real time. Adding even more confusion and reducing the likelihood that our county is ever able to open meaningfully is a new “equity metric” being imposed beginning oct 6.... uh...I’ll just leave a link State Officials Announce Equity Metric to More Effectively Fight COVID-19.

All of that being said, the only real impact has been to hospitality services I rarely used and office workers who are very able to work from home. Local manufacturers have been able to open for the most part. The economic impact localy is huge but my life is generally too boring to notice the differences.

Like a few other counties in Southern California we’ve been in a more restrictive countywide lockdown based on numbers that are influenced from a more concentrated geographic location. This frustrates many in the less dense and less impacted areas because OUR reality doesn’t look like the numbers or the restrictions suggest. Our county is literally larger in geographic size than at least 10 states. This seems to be more of an issue in Southern California than in the north though, I guess the counties get much smaller in size as you go north.

I do know our local school district has met the criteria (as laid out by the governor a month or so ago) to allow at least some in-person class time. My son was informed last week that starting Monday he will have a small fraction of students in class for a couple hours while he is responsible for simultaneously Providing a Zoom class experience for the others. He teaches special ed and the ability to be physically present (finally) is a huge win for him/these kids even if it ends up being temporary.

My kids are all doing virtual school/classes and doing very well. My 6th grader has been I’m virtual school for a couple years so this isn’t a new thing, the only new thing for her is the increased work load and number of teachers with her being in “middle school” now. Her piano teacher has decided to do in person classes again, we have taken her to a few but will be returning to the virtual option because the teacher adds no value in-person and doesn’t seem to,understand SHE represents her entire student body’s worth of exposure to US. Whether she cares about our daughter wearing a mask or not etc is irrelevant, she needs to be more rigid in her requirement that her students be clean and covered when they attend. My college kids are killing it because they all have had experience with on-line classes and are doing very well. The flexibility

Our governor is about to completely open restaurants allowing them to do as they want even though our numbers are still high.. We are still getting hundreds of new cases a day...

...it boils down to personal responsibility from this point on. Open or closed it is our own responsibility to do what is necessary to keep ourselves and our family safe. For some, a trip to a restaurant is a measured risked worth taking. I think some creative restaurant owners will choose to do extraordinary things to ensure safety of their employees and guests and in doing so will be rewarded will loyal employees and happy customers.

The only real problem I have with the state(s) relaxing restrictions NOW when there might still be an increased need to control exposure is...people are simple. Even though they have the capability to think for themselves (and we expect them to), they will use the state’s reduction in restrictions as an “all clear” signal and stop trying to protect themselves and by extension increase OUR risk by becoming a potential spreader.

I fully agree. If everyone would just take precautions when out then I can understand lowering restrictions , but there are too many people still treating this like its a total joke and not being careful and putting everyone at risk.. I try to take every precaution when we go anywhere ( haven't been to a restaurant since this began ) why can't others do the same ? I want this over just like everyone else does but we Have to be careful if we are gonna get through this..
I see people everywhere now with no mask and not distancing.. I just think its sad.

We have known for decades that being fat and smoking are two good ways to ensure an early death (and a killer life insurance premium) yet people still over eat and smoke. There is no amount of government regulation that will convince everyone to behave a certain way, even when personal health is at risk. So rather than look at others and say “why won’t YOU?” I just do what I need to do to be safe. Trying to change everyone else’s behavior is too stressful. That doesn’t mean I won’t tell the lady with a mask on here chin trying to edge in between me and my wife to back off...but I would have done that last year too.

Well we did the riskiest thing, we attended a wedding. Masks where worn and distancing was in place, but the crowd was there and we stayed in a hotel. Hoping all is well but we are on high alert for a few days monitoring symptoms.

Not gonna lie it felt good to see some family members even with the masks on.

"Not gonna lie"

I can think of a few riskier ways to catch Covid than that.

A hotel @CVargo ? eeeww yuck. those are hard enough to handle even when there isn't a booger epidemic. Did you at least bring (and use) the lysole and wipes? I just shivered thinking about it. ...and i just shivered again.
As a wise man once said...

Chad's breaking point was being able to enjoy a wedding, a big gathering... See people again after what probably feels like decades. As you said, gotta weigh risk vs reward and see how it works out for you, personally. [emoji846]

I stayed in a hotel in NJ this weekend. Just to get away.
Since it's off season it wasn't overly busy, though people came out at night. Mask wearing higher than I've seen in a while.
Drove past the main street in Cape May looking for a lunch spot and that was packed to the gills so we gave it a miss.

Yes we lysoled every surface of the room, avoided elevators where possible and spent a lot of time on a very uncrowded beach.

Was it worth it, heck yes.

We did the same. But we where on the 8th floor! With our two young kids so we took the elevator. But they had a policy to only ride the lobby with people staying in your room. That rule was followed by everyone we encountered.
