The Dreaded 2020 TSC "S Word" Thread

unplanned purchases
^^^This..... is the reason I won’t join a “S”. I refuse to say to myself now, that I can’t buy that thing in the future, that I didn’t yet know existed, and have remorse over my past self’s decisions......

I joined a “S” once, back in my early days, on another forum. Got knocked out. Told myself I’d never do it again.

I am reducing purchases. I’m living in the spirit of of the “S”, I’m just not a card carrying member.

Me thinks you take yourself too seriously 🤪 Making mistakes are how we learn ;) I bet I know your response to this too

Like I said, I joined one before..... it didn’t last. That was my mistake and yes I learned from it. That’s why I’ll never join another one, LOL. More power to anyone else that joins one. I get it. And understand the reasoning for it. It’s just not my thing. Doesn’t fit me.....

Yep, I was right. Figured you say joining was the mistake you learned from. It's all good (y)

My shaving purchases have been a lot easier when I decided to only buy from TSC Hobbyists and Artisans/Vendors. They literally have everything I need to be happy.

I can’t imagine what it would be like to actually be forced to not be able to buy something that excites me because I made a commitment to not buy more shaving products. I tried to explain this concept to my wife and although she understood the concept from a budgetary angle she couldn’t grasp it from a purely self imposed (almost like a punishment)angle. Believe me, she sees the level of excess that is easily achieved but the self imposed monthly restraints really confuse her. Personally I think “collecting” vintage straight razors simply because they have a different name, shape or scale configuration is an easy trap. If I didn’t make my own soap and have dozens more scents than you ever know, I could easily go mad buying every soap simply because it’s a scent that sounds like I must have it. Fortunately I’m not drawn to brushes, I don’t need to buy ever brush I see. I already bought pretty much every kind of DE razor I can imagine so I don’t look at those much (until @Dave in KY or @Techichi go posting cool new finds that I simply MUST have) ...I guess my spending has slowed these days and is limited to very unique vintage straight razors (or ones Dave finds) and other vintage barbershop stuff. ...and stones, I like to grab a good coticule when I can find it.

I can’t say I will ever commit to a sabbatical, nor do I endorse the idea but I DO support being mindful of what makes you happy and being reasonable in how you spend your money. We spend frivolously on all sorts of stuff, if shaving gear is YOUR money pit so be it. I try to be pretty thrifty when I can but that usually just ends up meaning I save money in one place so I can buy more in another.

To those who are really, really going to give a sabbatical a try...I salute you (no I don’t) and I wish you good luck (I really do).

I've been talking to a lot of people, but I didn't know until just now that there was anyone else around!
I know. I didn't want to interrupt the conversations you were having.....they are with yourself though. Sorry, someone had to tell you....

I will join for the year!

After using Dragonsbeard Skin Food Splash this morning I realized I hadn't put down an exception for something from him that had been discussed and I'm waiting on to be produced so added that exception.
