Your Mileage May Vary: Discussion

What I've observed over the years, on other forums and on Reddit and Discord, is that the practice of this hobby is composed of entirely subjective experiences that can strike the hobbyist so strongly that they speak and evaluate using the language of objective facts. Often, the writer self corrects with a thrown in YMMV. I'm sure many of us have seen people do it multiple times in one post. It doesn't bother me. After all the hours I spent early on watching people argue about Arko, Lilac Vegetal, and Tabac, enduring a few YMMVs is no big deal. I wouldn't say it myself, but I also try really hard to characterize my words as personal opinion, in pursuit of clarity, so I don't feel the need to add a proviso.

YMMV doesn't show up around here really, but the tone, spirit and consideration that thrives here is unique in my online experience. The core hobby value of "exhibiting," is primarily an act of sharing here.

Frankly, I think the prevalence of "YMMVs" was a feature of the old place, and was used primarily as a preemptive defense against an attack. There was a lot of aggression and hostility there, as I saw it, and that's all I'll say about that.

Solid!

I have used the term before but only when absolutely necessary.. I think it gets overused....Now I think TMO is more appropriate when it's just that , an opinion....

agree. And as such it became ingrained in the culture. Newbies took it as fact that they pretty much needed to use the term. I know I used it a lot over there.

I've used it very sparingly here, and usually only as part of a discussion rather than as a postface or conclusion to a statement. It's been almost 3 years since I've even typed that phrase, lol.

What phrase? 🤔

Very true and I am so thankful that we have a very different culture here at the Cadre. 🥃

I've spent a lot of time find people focusing on wetshaving in places I'd otherwise have no interest in, like Discord, Reddit, and even a brief couple of days looking at Tik-Toc. And like many of you, years elsewhere. The internet has largely enabled the growth of this hobby, so I've always sort of observed that relationship with interest over the years. I can say with confidence that the Cadre is a unique and precious part of this eco-system. Most of the issues that exist elsewhere have been recognized as issues, and the people here collectively create a self-moderated forum. Better. There are non-Cadre shaving videos, but those kids are trying to game the niche to get free stuff. More power to them. Cadre videos are sharing a shave and some musings and talk about the kit. Better. The cultural issues that crop up have been noted, and minimized here. And I think the role of the Journal here is unique in its prevalence, tone, and exceptionally thoughtful content. I could go on, but in my shaving career, there is no other place that comes close to actually realizing the "gentlemanly forum." That goal isn't policed, it's just practiced by everyone. Better.

Great words here, I'm glad to have the Cadre, it is my mancave. The place I can go to escape and where my friends hang out.

Just my $.02 worth, well $.10 now, counting inflation over the past two years, when I started with a DE back last year, I butchered my face with a Feather blade. I have come to realize that my technique was the cause of it and now a Feather blade is my goto, so yes YMMV especially after a break-in period 😉. I also now happen to be fond of the Gillette 7 o'clock black (The Ninja).
