Your Mileage May Vary: Discussion

Luecke3262

“I am the Grail Razor Hunter”
Hobbyist
Sometimes it needs to be said and many times its not at all. The saying "Your Mileage May Vary," as in everyone's results will be different and not one specific item or process is proven to be the best ever. So, in other words, nothing is definitive in the world of shaving except that Feather blades are sharper than serpent's tooth( JK YMMV).

Discuss!

I agree that everyone's results can be different for most things. However I disagree that your "mileage may vary" ever needs to be said, as it should be known to all that each persons experiences can and will be different.

I hate the saying and will never use it, and I am irritated when others use it. I pray it does not get a foothold here on the Cadre as there is nothing more irritating than every post ending with that phase, grrrrr! Blood pressure just spiked.

Ok, old man rant over. 🥃

Exactly, it’s great when everyone internalizes this and it is a constant and ever present part of forum culture. Though, some who are new to the forum don’t get it right away. Love the response brother!

I have never used the term YMMV.

I have developed my “opinions” on those “things that I like” usually in some sort of ranking and can usually produce the reasoning behind my thoughts.

When I first saw the use of “Your Mileage May Vary”, it seemed to be like the user might be saying something like, “This is the BEST, but if YOU don’t think so too, YOU are doing something wrong.

Plus… there are places where it is the perfect byline to pacify over zealous moderators and would be attackers.

BTW…What is the BEST soap? 🧨 👺 😡 🤬

I always looked at it like, “hey, this works for me and I really like the results, but it may not work for you at all.” Or just another way of saying, “I like this and it works well, but you do you and whatever makes you happy.”

Without question vintage Yardley is the best soap ever. YMMV or YDY 😝

I like You Do You.

BTW since I entered the Williams Competition this year (a soap I have never before used)…
…I think I am entering the Williams if the Greatest of All Time camp…
….Uh….Nah, just kidding.

Don’t tell anyone that I use canned foam occaisionally just to prove to myself that I can.

I totally agree with the sentiment, and also those who feel that the expression itself has been abused a bit on other sites.

At some point the expression just stared to feel like some sort of lazy boilerplate to me, like many of the expressions that pop up in shavedom. Of course that doesn't change the simple eternal truth of the matter, personal preference and experience is king. There's no set up to rule them all, and that's a big part of the fun of it!

What I've observed over the years, on other forums and on Reddit and Discord, is that the practice of this hobby is composed of entirely subjective experiences that can strike the hobbyist so strongly that they speak and evaluate using the language of objective facts. Often, the writer self corrects with a thrown in YMMV. I'm sure many of us have seen people do it multiple times in one post. It doesn't bother me. After all the hours I spent early on watching people argue about Arko, Lilac Vegetal, and Tabac, enduring a few YMMVs is no big deal. I wouldn't say it myself, but I also try really hard to characterize my words as personal opinion, in pursuit of clarity, so I don't feel the need to add a proviso.

YMMV doesn't show up around here really, but the tone, spirit and consideration that thrives here is unique in my online experience. The core hobby value of "exhibiting," is primarily an act of sharing here.

Frankly, I think the prevalence of "YMMVs" was a feature of the old place, and was used primarily as a preemptive defense against an attack. There was a lot of aggression and hostility there, as I saw it, and that's all I'll say about that.
