Twist Adjustable DE Recommendation

Patelliott

"I NEED NurseDave's Energy"
Hey Cadre, I have been looking at getting a twist adjustable razor for a little while. So far I have been keeping my eye on the Gillette Fat Boy. I am curious if y'all have any other recommendations. Personally I like the heavier weight of the Rockwell 6C vs. the VanderHagen DE I have. I was interested in the Rex Ambassador, but I have seen a few people post not so favorable reviews about them.

I love my Fatboy over my Slim. I have not tried any other TTO adjustables though. I’m mostly a 3 piece razor guy.

Well now...I have a few Slims (A’crat in there too), Fatboys and a Merkur Progress and Mergress which is a hot rodded Progress. I love them all but if I could have just one it would be the Mergress...though the Delta Echo Cubano Edition slim I got from @Dave in KY is perhaps the most beautiful of the bunch! It is in rotation and will be up shortly. My shorty Mergress is perfectly balanced, heavy and a great shaver. It is pricey though so if you like Art Deco get you a plain Progress and save some coin. The Fatboy is a phenomenal shaver and you can find a reasonable one if you look around...they get all hyped up and the prices being asked reflects that.

The domed head on the "Fatboy" is far too pronounced which makes it hard to shave close under the nose IMO. To be frank, the $1.00, yes ONE DOLLAR, Weishi TTO razor sold at Dollar Tree stores is a good razor. The Chinese blades that come with it are garbage, but it's actually a decent mid-aggressive razor.

I'll look into those, thank you.

Of your two choices, I would take the Rex. In my opinion - its a far better razor.
I have a M series, which feels a bit "draggy", but despite that its still better. They have apparently improved on that in the N or O series.

Other choices would be:
Vintage:
If you want to stay vintage Gillette, the Slim is better than a FatBoy. Remember at the time it was the "improved" FatBoy. My best shaving Gillette adjustable is my Super Adjustable 84.
Gibbs 15/17 - just the issue with notching the blades.

Modern - Taiga, but they will only be available later in the year.

I just started reading your Gibbs thread, and I am definitely going to look more into them.

He asked about an Adjustable though not a TTO

Of all the Gillettes (Fatboy, Slim, Super), I like the Fatboy the best. The weight balance are better. If you favor heavier razors, that’s the one for you. And I’ve never had any issue getting under the nose with it.

I do have a progress on the BST if you want to try one of those.

Thanks for the recommendation and the Progress offer KJ. My little brother has the Progress and let me try it out, but it just wasn't for me. For some odd reason I felt that one side shaved differently than the other. He also had the Futur and it didn't have the same problem, but it just felt weird in my hand.

Vintage Gillette adjustable razors are all I use now.

1961 FatBoy
1964 Slim
1968 Slim (x 2)
1970 Super

Of these, the Slims are the best shavers IME. Don't get me wrong, I get great shaves with them all. But when shaving with the Slims, it's almost effortless to get a BBS shave.

I haven't done a whole lot of research, which I should, but does the date code affect the quality of the shave?

Not that I've noticed. Both the 64 & 68 models shave equally well, I've found.

The Fat Boy is a close second. I have to be careful with the Super. It's an aggressive razor.

@MarkB what do you like more about the Slim vs. the Fat Boy
Basically it's just the ease of getting a great shave. Can't really pinpoint one thing that makes them better for me. I'm not sure of the history of the Slims and why Gillette moved away from the FatBoys. But this article seems to state there's a difference in head design between the two. That could have something to do with it.

Thank you for the info!
