TSC Musk Madness!

Jeris Musk. Very similar scent to AV and Jovan. But at $6 for 14oz, it's probably the best bargain musk there is.

Entry 9: Morocco Musk by Saravel
1000005683.jpg
Release Date: 1988
Status: Discontinued (but not too rare)

So, this is another obscure musk that's under the radar. Fun fact, this was (as far as I can research) Saravel's first and only attempt at a fragrance for men in their catalogue, having 9 others for women. This apparently was 15 bucks back in the day and could've been found at drug stores, which I find funny cause that would be way more expensive than the better alternatives of the time.

The scent, unfortunately, has no notes, but I can say this smells like a watered down clone of Avon Clint, which means it smells like a knock off of Aramis Aramis. From my nose it's a simple blend of animalic musk, leather, lavender, and some more aldyhydic notes i can't expressly identify, and there may be some florals like galbanum or geranium. It's incredibly rugged, nature, and macho, also quite "pissy". Not my kind of scent if I'm honest.

It's not all that impressive to me, and I can see why it didn't become so recognizable and widely available. Do try to find as a novelty but this isn't much too special outside of collecting.

It smells like an animal in leather, what more can be said?

Master Musk used to be like that too until it randomly became scarce and costs more than it's worth
I've never seen Master Musk, and I've pretty much bought every Master AS I've found over the last 15 years. Of course all master products are pretty much discontinued. MWC was bought by another beauty company, but they decided to go in another direction, and no longer make the aftershaves and other products.

Here's my Jovan collection. I thought I had one more, but I couldn't locate it. Honestly I never realized the Musk Oil was different from the Musk. I thought it was just different labeling. The musk smells brighter sweeter and more like AV and Jeris. The Musk Oil is more robust smelling. I wouldn't say the scent has any more longevity. Tomorrow I'll try the Evening Edition.

You're only missing one: Signature Edition

Black Musk, White Musk, Platinum Musk…. Do those not count?
No those are flankers, as in they have the name musk but is a different scent. What you have is Jovan Musk but with different concentrations. Same scent but with different amounts of alcohol and oils.

Black Musk, White Musk, Platinum Musk, and Tropical Musk are different scents entirely with different notes, but carry the jovan musk name and theme and alter it.

So what are evening and signature editions, and how are those not flankers (man I hate that word)?

Signature is a special edition release of Jovan Musk in the early 00s that uses a raunchier Musk to try and replicate the original formulation of Jovan, but in all regards is the same fragrance. Evening edition is Jovan Musk, with the same notes, but altered to be more seductive like adding more Musk and vanilla and maybe reducing the citrus or woody notes, but it's the same notes.

Looking at the other "Musk" flankers they're entirely different scents that have some notes that repeat. Black Musk is essentially meant to be a younger, fresher, and somewhat spicy floral blend with musk in the back. Not really a fan of it... White Musk is white florals with a cleaner musk and light woods. So on and so forth.

Entry 10: Aqua Velva Musk by Williams (modern formulation)

1000005697.jpg
Release Date: 1975
Status: Widely Availble

Ah here we are again with another highly rated musk scent by the Cadre and shave enthusiasts, for good reason. Williams has some great Fandom behind it, and I can admit I enjoy Aqua Velva Ice Blue myself, so it was interesting to see they made and still make a musk fragrance, and it's pretty cheap. But I will be honest, compared to the others, this is a very different musk scent and I disagree with Spider on it smelling anything similar to Jovan Musk. Jovan is a pretty raw, old school macho musk by today's standard, but AV Musk is a pretty sweet, almost unisex Musk.

For starters, the notes are simply listed as Musk, Powdery Notes, Lemon, Tobacco, and Leather. This fragrance starts crazy with it being a very ambery, powdery, talc-like opening mixed with the lemon, and together it almost has a orange creamsicle scent, with there then being a cardamom-like funk within. This would fade into a pretty heady Jasmine and sandalwood sorta middle with there being hints of tobacco, but it's a fresher, clean tobacco. The it goes into a very sweet, semi floral musk until ending out on a light leather and musk.

This isn't bad at all but it's pretty... heavy, which is funny to say given it's musk, but it's just that it's powdery notes can be a little overwhelming until it calms to the leathery floral musk finale. And I'm not overexaggerating, it's definitely a sweet and cloying powder you might recall from older lady's fragrances.

I can say that I recommend this to be worn a little lighter than other fragrances and aftershaves. You will still get noticed but even with today's version you can still blow up a room, so it's got some impressive projection. Oh, and another thing is this version lacks menthol unlike the vintage so it's much more focused on the fragrance and lacks the potential freshness or underlying green notes from the usage of menthol.

Musk Meter:
10/10
This is no joke. We've got the first 10/10. Whether or not I like it, this is a musk bomb. It's not animalic, but it's just pure musk all throughout and you will know it at first whiff. Strong, sweet, and powdery, how a musk (By name) fragrance smells when you think of one.
