Triple Milled Soaps

A lot of love is given to our artisans during this, the modern era of wet shaving and might I say, deservedly so. Though, in the before-fore times(the dark ages), most of us(@BarberDave and a few others) only had tried and trusted Triple Milled soaps on hand when we first started out. By 2015 many artisans started to pop up each year and by the end of the 2010's the artisan had taken prominence in the shaving communities as the soaps of choice. There have likely been 100's of artisans that have come and gone in the last few years, but many of the old dogs still exist. These soaps are loved for their longevity, classic scents, and history, but many have fallen to progress and market demands.

The list below are some of the known Triple Milled Shaving Soaps, some are available today while others are discontinued and are only available in old stock.

How many of these have you tried?? What is your favorite Triple Milled Soap?

I've tried these triple-milled soaps, and Tabac is my favorite of the bunch.

Arko
MdC
MWF
Palmolive Stick
Tabac
Tabac would be my favorite, but about two years ago I developed a serious sensitivity/allergy to it… I’d get super red hot cheeks like I had a bad sunburn and then my hands would itch and then they would BURN like I’d rubbed them with a ghost pepper! Afterwards all the skin on my hands would peel off, like I’d had a chemical burn. It happened multiple times and I determined Tabac soap and aftershave, old spice soap and aftershave, and Fine shaving soap caused this reaction… So they have all been binned… 😞

My goodness! I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm thankful you could isolate the offenders and take action. I had mild sensitivity to the Palmolive stick, but all the others were fine.

Also...MWF had the best skin care. However, I use unrefined shea butter in my post-shave routine, so I don't concern myself with the drying effects of one soap or cream vs. another.

the only tripled milled soap i have is SV, is there another i should try out?
Part of it may depend on what scents you are interested in. I would recommend:

MWF (light soap scent)
PdP (63 is my fave)
Haslinger (multiple light scents)
Dr Harris (I’ve used their creams)
SV (also has a lot of scents to offer)
Fine made good soaps but needed more staying power.
Arko smells like a urinal puck

Cost can add up quick, so research and buy in moderation. Beware the enablers.

Arko smells like the Angles came down from heaven and did your laundry.

Nice, Cella and RazoRock P-160 are the only other soaps that bother me, I think it’s the sweet almond oil. I was not chosen by MWF, but at that time I lived in an area with super hard water, so some day I should give it a try again. I should try out the Shea butter some time, you’re not the only person I know that likes it!

Obviously I’m biased because I love it, but De Vergulde Hand is excellent, Palmolive is great and inexpensive, Tabac, and Arko is inexpensive and fantastic (don’t listen to @MilkCrate he’s in leagues with the guy from down south if you know what I mean).

Well I thought I had tried some soaps, but this list puts me to shame!

I’ve tried:
Czech & Speake
DR Harris
Geo.F. Trumper
Musgo Real
MWF
Saponificio Varesino

And I own some Haslinger, but haven’t given it a whirl yet.

I got along better with MWF by grating it and pressing it into a shave stick. I was not loading enough off the puck with my brush to get a decent lather. Apparently, I load quite a bit heavier with a shave stick. At least that was the case when I tried it a few years ago. I currently use MWF bath soap in my pre-shave routine. I really like it for this purpose. A wet bar of MWF is so slippery that you can barely hold onto it.

I can't say enough good things about USB. It is hands down the best moisturizer I've ever used on my face and hands. A family member tells me it works great on sunburns as well. I pay a little extra for a product with a purity certification, and it is nearly odorless. A little goes a long way. It is easy to overapply, but you can remove the excess with a towel or tissue. A 16-oz tub will last quite a long time, and it's a staple in my den.

What have I tried? My list is pretty short.

Arko - smells like citronella to me.
Tabac - smells like my grandma (well, not anymore, she passed quite a few years ago)
La Toja stick (not on the list up there but seems hard enough to be triple milled)

I also have some tallow Haslinger and a modern Williams, just haven't used them.

I am currently trying to kill my Tabac. It seems to be living forever though. I love its performance.

This is a fun thread! Left commentary when I had specific thoughts pop into my head about the soap.

De Vergulde Hand - Extra is the only soap I've ever used that caused a reaction on my face. Caught me completely off guard, so much so that I thought I just had a bad shave and I tried 2 more times before realizing it was something in the soap.
Dusy Kabinett
Fine accoutrements
Green Mountain - One of only two soaps I've relegated to shower duty, with the other being the Blue Wilkie Bowl from the UK. Could not get a serviceable lather out of either no matter what I tried.
Haslinger - Haven't used a puck since they made the transition away from tallow but the Schafmilch will replace my puck of MWF when it's finally gone 20 years from now.
L'Occitane
LEA - Currently working through a stick that I had sliced and pressed into an old dish, good clean scent and nice performance.
MWF
Old Spice- Have a puck of the vintage stuff in my unobtanium stash, slight OS scent remains, performance is great.
Palmolive Stick - Love this stick, wish they didn't get so expensive to import, had 8+ of them at one time but preferred to mill into a dish and now have just a few left in the stash.
Pre de Provence
Tabac
Valobra - Have a stick left in my unobtanium stash that gets brought out on occasion, great stuff.
Williams - Have 8 pucks of vintage which at my current usage rate of 1 puck every 5 or so years due to stingy use will last the rest of my life.

My favorite of the list is definitely the Vintage Williams I have squirreled away, with Palmolive coming in a close second. If I only consider what is currently available to purchase the Palmolive takes the cake for me.

I'm kinda boring.
I've been using Williams since I was 15. But I love my MWF.
