I polished my boots last night, it reminded me that my boys used to have to polish their boots and iron their uniforms for ROTC and Boy Scouts. I think learning to maintain your clothing, footwear, Car/truck and home are skills we should definitely be teaching.

A really good point! I saw my father polish his shoes and boots, but had to figure it out on my own, and the same for shaving! This is good! In addition to oiling a belt or other leather item that gets a lot of use.

I know honing was mentioned, but sharpening a knife, kitchen or otherwise is a great skill to have.

I think a LOT of what needs to be or should be taught to our sons (and daughters) are those things our fathers or grandfathers used to do daily without a thought. If we include our kids in our daily activities they will either learn by watching (and helping when possible) or come away with enough awareness of the task they will feel comfortable trying to do it or learn it as an adult.

I have taught my boys/girls a lot of little things over the years but I think THE BEST thing I taught them was not to be afraid to try. Whether its a car/home repair project, a hobby or a job, I am proud to say my kids are willing to jump in and try even if they haven't been "taught" to do the task. Other than being there for them when they failed, I can only assume they learned the value of trying by watching me, my dad, my uncle etc. doing things that were clearly out of our comfort zone. I have also instilled a sense of frugality in them. To the extent possible, if the limiting factor was having the right tool(s) for the job (even if I only had a marginal knowledge of how to actually DO the job) and the cost of the tool(s) was less than paying someone to to do the job, I would opt to buy the tool(s). When we were younger and funds were very tight this was a bigger risk because I had many occasions where I not only failed to to the job but made it worse.

**Side note: I am trying to convince my youngest daughter to learn to hone using my stone collection and old razors. She has been looking for ways to make $ and I suggested being able to hone razors and other knives would be a way. ...and I would not need to do any of my own honing.

Indeed. Perhaps somewhere down the line we can/should try to narrow the list. Whether by consolidating "lessons" into more broad headings or by prioritizing (by vote?) the top 10, 20 etc. Just goes to show there is a BIG need for a father figure to be present to teach these lessons. Not that a single mother can't teach these lessons, I just suspect they have their own list.
