This past March I added an open comb A base plate. Being a sensitive guy (hey, I try!) I figured I'd take Chris's advice and step down. While I do "feel" the shave more, but not like when I used an Old Type or NEW short comb. After a month, I ordered the B open comb. I think this is it, well, the 5 plates (SB A, B, & C in addition to the OC plates). This razor gives me the best shaves ever. I love my birth year Slim, and it gets used on occasion, but typically after two shaves, I think Why not use what gives me the best shave?
That's my update and l'm sticking to it!
For almost two years I only used vintage Gillettes, and a '64 Slim mostly. I found that the Karve B plate, safety bar, felt like my Slim on 4 or 5 with a closeness of 6. If I shaved 2 or more passes on 6, my face would become unhappy after two days. The C SB plate felt like 5.5 and shaved like a 6+ setting.Nice report. Being a TTO Gillette lover, this starts to sound very tempting.
How would you compare the plates to Slim settings, if it something you can do?
I found it gives me consistently very good shaves. Just remember, YMMV, the mantra of traditional shaving! Thanks @MaineYooper that’s very helpful. I’m surprised to hear that the B plate sounds like where I’d gravitate.
In other words "don't blame me!"I found it gives me consistently very good shaves. Just remember, YMMV, the mantra of traditional shaving!
Ha, you saw right through my verbiage! In other words "don't blame me!"
Just bought a new Karve with C plate. I am hoping this razor lives up to all the praise.
I hit that same realization recently.I guess I need to stick with what works and end the silly never ending quest for the holy grail of razors.
