The Non-Artisan Soap & Cream Thread

Non artisan favorites of mine include TOBS creams (Sandalwood & Lemon Lime are my faves). Also CO Bigelow cream.

I know I'm in the minority when it comes to Tabac. I love the scent...... but I cannot get it to perform. It lacks cushion and is not very slick. I tend to get weepers when I use it.

Soaps I love include L'Occitane Cade, PdP No. 63, Williams, Haslinger, Valobra (croap), and Godrej round.

I like the performance of some of the sticks, but I hate using sticks.

That's weird that Proraso is considered a no-no for SR shaving. I use a straight and Proraso was my second soap. I actually loved the performance of it. Just wasn't super crazy about the scent of the sandalwood one. I felt it smelled too much like shea butter, but to me it was plenty slick and had a good enough cushion that I wasn't getting razor burn or irritation when I used it.

For me my favorite has been TOBS sandalwood soap, but I have yet to try a lot of the ones listed. As soon as I clear a few spots in my soap collection (or my wife's cat kicks the bucket and I can have my shave den back) then I will acquire more of the non-artisian soaps.

It surprises and disappoints me that you don't get good performance from Tabac because it has such a fabulous scent. That is a huge bummer.

Of the ones on your list that I have tried, I was disappointed by Godrej and new formula Haslinger. They were just 'meh' for me.

If I was forced to pick *just one* soap, it would be MWF. With my stockpile, I haven’t used it since 2014, but for me, it’s the perfect combination of lather, scent and postshave feel.
It has been awhile since I used MWF, I don't recall it having a scent.

I wish I knew what you were saying Don..... your GIFs never show for me......

Glycerin-based soaps like the Colonel's get a bad rap. I swear, if I ever see the criticism 'melt and pour,' my head wants to explode. Those soaps had endless variety, with good, strong scents, and I always, ALWAYS found that they delivered the goods when it came to lather. I wish that Charles at QED still offered his QEDMan glycerin soaps because the scents were just mind-blowing.

I know what you're saying, since it is very lightly fragranced, but I pick up a light, clean scent if I stick my nose into the bowl, but it also lingers a bit postshave.

MWF is another that I could never get to lather. Always wanted to make it work, just never could.

I love Col Conk soaps. Just basic, cheap, and gets the job done. I used QED once, waaaaay back, but don't remember it well. I think the scent I had, I did not like. But I always loved HoneyBee soaps. She took M&P soaps to the next level of performance.

Another Col. Conk fan here. I have their bay rum and I really enjoy it!

So, I am still going strong with the LEA Classic soap. The wooden bowl is holding up nicely and will hopefully be in good shape to be used with future pucks. This soap definitely belongs on the list of classic non-artisan soaps. My only problem is that the scent is too light. It smells great throughout the shave, but disappears not long after the shave is complete.

Perhaps I will spend the rest of 2020 exploring these wonderful soaps in my 3017ing. We'll see.

I am really looking forward to trying the La Toja stick that I recently traded for.

I think if MWF was introduced for the first time to the shaving world today, it would be underwhelming at best. I’ve used it For years, stopped using it for a very long time, and then picked it up again recently. With all the new artisans raising the bar, it isn’t anything special anymore. I think people like it’s reputation more than its performance.

I’m one of those who like the performance. For some reason, I’ve never had a problem with it and the postshave feel is second to none for me.
