Stirling 3 piece DEs

Tonight’s shave was with the ST or Standard Gap razor with roughly about 24 hours worth of stubble. As I mentioned previously with those shaves, they were extremely long lasting. Today was almost the same as yesterday’s stubble but, I gave it a couple more hours and there is just a bit more stubble to work with for the evening shave. Took the same Gillette SP (Black Ninja) from the previous two shaves with the Stirling HA and just dropped it into the Stirling ST. The handle here has the knurling just about in the middle but, leaning slightly towards the top half of the handle. Surprisingly, it still felt good in the hands and I never needed to readjust or look for an area that I felt comfortable with. Two fingers & thumb on the knurled area and my pinky towards the bottom for guiding balance. Felt just as comfortable and balanced as the HA’s handle set up. Truthfully though. I like the HA handle just a bit more. Anyways, the shave was really an excellent 2 pass affair. I’ll add that the Gillette SP is still feeling sharp & smooth and in the ST version it was really a great combo. I like efficient and yet smooth and I don’t mind a bit of blade feel. What the HA offers is leaps and bounds over the ST in blade feel yet, the ST delivers a very good efficient shave with the blade feel toned down quite a bit. I was able to really move this razor quickly and comfortably all around my face and neck with little to no fear of putting red dots all over my face. This is not a mild shaver but, it is very smooth with just the right amount of blade exposure to get the job done really well. An uneventful shave that left me with another BBS finish. 3 down and 1 more shave to go before I get these ready to make a trip across the country.

I’ll tell you now. I’m really liking these 2 offerings from Stirling....

Apologies for the delay. I couldn’t post last night as I had a job issue that I had to attend too. Without further ado, my final thoughts on the Stirling razors....

Though my stay was short with the razors and I would have loved to have shaven with each razor for a week, those two shaves with each one of them gave me more than enough feedback for a solid feel and a definite direction on where I would be heading in acquiring one or both of these Stirling creations. The fit and finish is excellent on both of them from the handle screwing into the top cap thread, to the cap and base squeezing down on the blade locking it into place giving both solid support and rigidity. The feel in the hands is of a top notch tool that feels both luxurious & purposeful with a tactile presence that they both mean business. The knurling that is offered by both handles is superb and though they are both offered differently on the length of each handle, they present one with more than sufficient grip to allow some adjustability on how one would like to hold these tools.

The HA is exactly what Rod at Stirling says that it is. It’s a whisker whacking beast that has some manners to it. Think Ikon Tech blade feel with near Timeless vice-like clamping on the blade, properly supported. Make no mistake about it, this razor was designed & built to give the user more blade feel and be the de facto 1-2 pass razor in one’s arsenal. You like blade feel? Check. You want to get done in 2 passes or less with NO touch ups required? Double Check. You like your Ikon Tech but, you want better construction or a hommina-hommina exotic alloy? Check. Do you like to oogle & aah your shiny new facial hair terrorist? Again, Check. Yet, this thing has some manners because even though it is a forward feeling blade razor, it’s smoother than the I-Tech and just as efficient. That was my only two issues with the I-Tech. The make up in alloy and the blade flex because I feel it’s not as properly supported as it could have been. The HA solves that very, very nicely. If you do not like blade feel on your face, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU.... If you do, get your charge card ready, pay down your debt, send the wife and kids on a vacation when this razor becomes available. You will want to be alone when you get this razor in your hands and get your first shave in as you will giggle uncontrollably in sheer delight. Like a 3rd grade school girl sitting next to her crush at recess. It’s totally worth it in my estimation. It will give you one of the finest, closest shaves you’ve experienced. You’ll get some nice skin exfoliation as an added bonus if you treat it with disrespect. I’d recommend it to anyone except for the newbie that just got his/her first DE and is still sporting their Huggies. If you know your razor and have a good foundation on shave technique, a 6 month private to a grizzled battle tested razor vet of many years will find success with the HA.

The ST is an excellent performer as well. And to be truthful and blatantly honest, I liked the ST more. I know, I just pulled all the manly hairs out from my chest and waxed out my bikini line after going all out, full testosterone mode on the HA. Hear me out on this one. I love blade feel as I still do straight shave on occasion and will always do so. I have plenty of blade forward razors that give me nearly the same shave feel as the HA, just not as beautifully made or constructed of a premium alloy. The PAA EVO SS, Ikon El Jefe, I-Tech, Asylum RX and a couple of others as well. The EVO & RX are both constructed of premium alloy but, not as beautiful to look at (in my eyes) as the Stirling razors. These two razors almost have a Timeless like look to them though they are quite different in design and head geometry. The ST cemented itself into my mind as a go to everyday shaver that cuts hair with nearly that same efficiency of it’s bigger brother, the HA but, does it with substantially less blade feel. Sort of like somewhere in between a Gamechanger .84 SB & a Timeless .95 SB. Nearly in the middle but, tuned more toward the Timeless .95 side. It felt so good on the face that I nearly had it racing across my face after the first stroke. It was fantastic on the ATG strokes with nice audible feedback from the razor. The HA shows it as well, perhaps more so but, you need to pay more attention with it as well or it can be well, you know, distressing. The ST gave me solid 12-13 hours of shaved skin smoothness losing only by 3-4 hours to the HA in total longevity. Nevertheless, the quality of shaves (2 only) were superb and never ever did I feel it would try to turn on me and bite. It was love at first shave, seriously.

So, where would I go? Both if you asked me and my manly compulsive side. Truthfully though, the Misses knows I’m onto these and she’s already conceded on me getting one. I’ve tried on two for quite some time. Every time I bring it up and mention the release is coming soon with a limited number of razors, she asks me one question. “Honey, do you like sleeping in our bed or, would you prefer the couch indefinitely?” I always cringe and bow my head slowly walking away and mumbling “You, Dear”.

It’s the ST for me. Besides, I like sleeping with my Old Lady....

Your description of the HA makes me want to run to the safety of my straights.

Razor: Stirling 316 SS Hyper Aggressive Head
Blade: Wizamet (4)
Brush: Wolf Whisker Black Wolf
Soap: Zingari Man The Blacksmith
Aftershave 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla
Aftershave 2: @Dragonsbeard Skin Food Splash
Talc: Vintage Mennen
Fragrance: BVLGARI Man in Black Essence

I'm an idiot that will accept most any dare as long as it doesn't go against my Bible based life principles even if danger is involved. I had myself worked up for this shave as I was reading and watching the reviews on the new Stirling HA, Hyper Aggressive razor head. My fears were unfounded. Is it aggressive? Ummmm YEAH, just look at that blade exposure in this crummy picture I couldn't get to focus.
IMG_20200626_204834915.jpg
But I just took it slower than usual and had no problems sans a little stall grab on my chin area that sealed quickly. This is NOT an everyday driver but a fun experience to have had. Definitely more blade feel than my preference but with good technique, a smooth and comfortable shave can be had. If not attentive it will no doubt make you pay for the lack of respect shown it. I'm glad to try this even though not the one for me. Yep, after 1 shave I know it isn't for me but I knew that before it ever arrived. I would be more suited for the Standard from everything I've read already, but how can you not give it a try. It's a beauty for my eyes to behold and I'm VERY appreciative for Rod @Joe Hackett for providing it for a test spin. It will be sanitized, cleaned and set aside to go to the next in line. The Standard but still healthy gapped razor is up for tomorrow. Video is uploading now. Have a Stupid Fun Day Cadre !!! Mine is starting that way 🤪

I canceled my turn do to some dispute how I was going to send on to the next person (packaging) I am still up in the air if I will buy one. Its been a long time since conception and its still not for sale. No fault of Rod just a stupid machinest who thought he could have China finish it off for him and save him some cash.

Yep, I'm familiar with the shenanigans they tried to pull over on him. The packaging shouldn't be a big deal. Put it all back in the box they are in for protection of the cases and razors and then into a Priority bubble mailer for $8.40 plus extra insurance to cover their cost. Arrived to me in the Non-Bubble mailer but in a priority envelope. His expensive razors traveling the country so I'm willing to do as he asked.

Razor: Stirling 316 SS Standard Head
Blade: Wizamet (1)
Brush: TSC Legacy
Soap: Tonsorial Williams
Aftershave 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla
Aftershave 2: Avon Island Lime
Talc: Vintage Mennen
Fragrance: Penhaligon's Bayolea

The idiot is back on the Island with Sam @woodpusher and a shout out to him in the video uploading as well as KJ and Fluffy. So that means it was the Tonsorial Williams soap 1508.5 continuing. It gave what was needed for the Stirling ST head razor to swipe off the suds and whiskers. I told the wife when the razors arrived and the eye stare started that this is a pass where I won't be buying them because they are purported to be too aggressive a razor for me........................whispering now so she doesn't hear "I like the ST head and will be watching for it perhaps when released" I got a fast shave in, I reopened the stall grab from yesterday as well as removed a pimple but actually I was very impressed with the smoothness even with the blade feel and the efficient shave had. Going to dial it in with a couple more shaves for sure but I can tell it will be on my radar when released if I can swing it having been out of work for 3 months now. Topped off with Humphrey's Maravilla 70, Avon Island Lime and Penhaligon's Bayolea. I think I preferred the handle I shaved with today on the ST head but can't remember which it is. I like the looks of both but slightly favoring this one and the grip/feel was more than adequate. @Joe Hackett Rod and Mandy have a couple GREAT razors in the pipeline here for sure that will bridge a good gap (see what I did there) of razor enthusiasts. between the 2 head choices. Have a great day Cadre !!!!

So Dave Stirling has a tale of two razors. One very aggressive and the other medium at best. Covers most people so might be a win win for Rod.

I'd say most would say Med Aggressive and VERY Aggressive but I think it will bridge a bigger gap of people than I thought at 1st yes. Of course that is just my opinion on how it felt to me (y)

Razor: @Joe Hackett Stirling 316 SS Standard Head
Blade: Wizamet (2)
Brush: Rubberset 400 @Clouds Ferrule/Cashmere
Soap: @Dragonsbeard Ethos Succes
Aftershave 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla
Aftershave 2: Ethos Succes Skin Food Splash
Talc: Vintage Mennen
Fragrance: Ethos Succes EdP

So I had another shave with the ST (Standard) Head and got a close comfortable shave. The fit, finish and tolerances on the razor are great. They are going to be a hit for The Stirling family for sure. After today's shave I have come to the conclusion that while I can get a comfortable and close shave, they are just more aggressive than I desire or need for my daily shaving routine and so probably not a fit for me. I thank Rod for making this pass possible and will get these mailed today so as to expedite it to others waiting for the chance to try them out. Back to Knoxville as Bill is getting moved to a regular room as they get him to a point he is mobile enough to go home. Have a great day Cadre !!!

I just received the razors from Dave today and got to say that they do present well and quality is top notch for the razors AND the travel cases they came in.

First shave tonight using the HA head. First of all, the blade loading was easier than I thought it would be. The Mamba, GC, and Goodwill all have the blade guides on the base plate, but this is the first time it was a bar and not round pins. It did hold the blade in place better than pins, but still there was a need to lift the base plate in order to secure the cap and it was easier for the blade to slip out of place. Secondly, the handle was a little different with the portion nearest the head being smooth and skinny, similar to the Krect razors. The design of the handle worked well as the head was heavy and by holding the handle low, it allowed (forced) me to guide the razor head and let the weight do all the work. Fit and finish on the razor was first class.

On with the shave. To be honest, I have to say that this is one of the worst razors I have shaved with. It equals the Yaqi Ares in aggressiveness without efficiency. There was significant blade feel and a very narrow angle where it worked well. This was similar to when I shaved with the Alpha Outlaw last week, however the difference was that using the wrong angle with the Outlaw did not scrape a layer of skin off your face. I looked at the blade exposure and knew that I needed to go real slow and try different angles to get things right. When I found the proper angle, it was very efficient in many places, however in my problem areas, I could not get it to do a clean shave mostly because slight pressure, skin stretching, and buffing would be dangerous with this head.

I am not new to aggressive razors, with my two favorites being a CG Lvl3 SS, and my REX Ambassador set to 6, however this HA head is not something that I would consider buying or shaving with if it was given to me. For now, I have it loaded for one more shave tomorrow just to see if there was something I missed from tonight's shave. After that, I will move on to the ST head and hope it is better.

Don't worry Dave, we're still friends ;)

Hey, I didn't make it. I had no issues shaving with it and video to prove it 😂
Well, no video for me since I didn't get the official shirt. Just as well since I would have ruined it by having blood stains on it if I shaved with razors like the HA. Anyway, I got a slightly better pic of what you were trying to show earlier.

DSC03295.JPG

Not only does the blade stick out past the angle, but the real killer is the space between the blade and the base plate. It is large enough for small animals to hide in it. It did give me a strategy for tomorrow's shave though, which is to ride the cap and not even use the bar. If I don't post a shave report tomorrow night, call 911, you have my address.

Will do and I hope you have at least a less bloody/rough encounter. Thanks for the much better pic for folks (y)
