Wednesday morning:

Hot shower
Razorock Plissoft 26mm Monster
Super Speed/Perma Sharp day 11
Ingram SC (from Egypt)
Gold Bond Moisturizer
Alt Innsbruck AS Splash

This Egyptian version of Ingram is actually better than the discontinued British one - the scent is the same nice, old school minty/medicinal type, the lather is easier to work up, the menthol sensation is somewhat stronger, and it has a more comfortable post-shave feeling. The Gold Bond moisturizer and the lovely Alt Innsbruck aftershave were such a good finishing touch. Three passes left me smoother than silk - another wonderful BBS shave that I really enjoyed!

Wishing you all a great day - be well and stay safe!

Hello everyone! Hope you had a pleasant evening.

Another phenomenal shave this morning! Returned to my vintage Shulton Old Spice suite of products. Wonderful Old School scent with an incredible lather built with the Paladin badger brush for three passes with the Karve and I finished with alum, followed by Thayers unscented witch hazel and the matching aftershave lotion, talc & EdC,

BBS bliss!!

Hope you have a great day. :)

Yesterday, I wrote about Gentleman’s Nod’s Musashi transporting me to different places that I have been before. Today, I was transported to somewhere I have never been before by Mystic Water’s Maestrale. As I have written before, Michelle has lived in Sardinia, Italy. And she notes that “‘Maestrale’ is the name of the bracing wind that brings fresh, clear weather to the island of Sardinia, where spike lavender, rosemary and peppermint grow wild.” And, that is the bracing, cooling, herbal essential oil blend in this soap.

Spike lavender (some may know it as Portuguese lavender) has more of a camphor, herbal, stimulating effect. In fact, lavandin, is a natural hybrid of spike lavender and English lavender. This gives you a sense of how strong spike lavender can be. Michelle, as usual, blends the peppermint, rosemary, and spike lavender in a balanced and thoughtful way. This is bracing and cooling for those hot summer days when the heat is bearing down on you. Like a blast of sea spray, it cleanses and reinvigorates. This is not shave soap as perfumery. This is shave soap as aromatherapy. However, when we think of aromatherapy, we tend to think of relaxing and calming. But, that is not all we need. This is to wake us up. This is to cut through and clarify. This is that cup of coffee. And, it’s one thing when it’s the menthol making your face tingle. It’s quite another when the essential oils are in the air working on your sinuses and mind. This soap, like all of Michelle’s soaps, does something to me and a lot for me.

Have an awesome day, friends!

I had an awesome shave today. I loaded my brush off the Mitchell's Wool Fat puck and then built a creamy, thick, slick lather in my bowl. The GC with the .68-p plate with a 5th use Rex Platinum blade glided across my face and easily removed 2 days of growth. I am clean, refreshed and BBS.

A pretty poor shave today. It wasn't the soap, it was the operator. I forgot I put a feather in the razor. I usually have a astra in this razor. It's like autopilot. Unfortunately I was a bit haphazard. Ended up with a few cuts/nicks. The alum lit me up like a christmas tree; and the aftershave splash burned like a thousand suns. Pretty brutal. I've been applying stirling post shave balm throughout the day.

• Bowl: Fine Accoutrements – Stoneware Lather Bowl
• Brush: Semogue – 1470 (Boar)
• Razor: Ern – Model 421; 11/16, Full Hollow, Square Point
• Soap: Wild Fox Rituals – Bourbon and Smoked Vanilla
• Aftershave: CBL Soaps – Russian Tea After Shave Tonic
• Balm: Eleven – Unscented Aftershave Balm
• Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Co. – Seaforth! Black Watch EDT

I was very happy to see The Razor Company offering samples of Wild Fox Rituals. It is particularly nice as the company is Canadian and rather—I would even say unjustified—expensive. I picked up three scents: Cooling Japanese Peppermint, Citrus Blast, and today’s scent: Bourbon and Smoked Vanilla. I had tried this scent once before and noted that it was something I would like to explore once again. However, after today’s shave, I think just keeping this sample (and the other samples) around will be enough for me. The truth is, for every one of the samples I purchased from Wild Fox, there is a similar soap I have that is far cheaper with a better base and a more natural scent.

I should give credit to Wild Fox’s base. It is protective and slick. I am not sure that it is tremendously moisturizing, but I certainly don’t have a problem with it. It was not particularly voluminous, but again, that may not be how it functions. The scent of bourbon and smoked vanilla was fairly nice “off the puck,” but as I lathered it, it became somewhat bizarre and disjointed. The vanilla, which had been merely a sweet vanillin, receded into the background, and the bourbon smelled incredibly fragmented. It is almost how perfumers take the hundreds of notes that make up a scent like bourbon and pick out the most prominent few. There was the sort of alcohol of bourbon, some elements of a wooden cask (though not a charred one, almost like a moldy one), and some very strangely muted browned sugars. It was a jarring experience where I started the shave thinking, “I wish they made a fragrance or a candle of this scent,” when smelling the puck to “Ugh, if you’re going to do bourbon, make it a bourbon, not an artificial broken bourbon.”

I mentioned that each Wild Fox soap I purchased has a cheaper and better alternative in my collection. For bourbon and smoked vanilla, that is Moon’s Warmest Regards. I know there are proper bourbon-based scents out there (I am particularly fond of Zingari Man’s Barrel Proof), but I think the feeling that Wild Fox is after is the one found in Moon’s Warmest Regards. That is to say, I know there are better soaps with more similar scent notes, but the spirit of what Bourbon and Smoked Vanilla is trying to capture is best expressed by Warmest Regards.

Wild Fox might just be a victim of being late to a crowded market with top notch soaps. It’s a good product. It’s just not something I’m terribly excited about. On the other hand, I am very excited about CBL’s After Shave Tonic. After using it, I very rarely reach for a balm. I just noticed that CBL does sell an unscented version. I wonder if that might be something to use as a balm? Something I’ll have to think about, for sure.

Have an awesome day, friends!
