I should have mentioned that most American men found fragrance (as opposed to an aftershave like bay rum) to be too effeminate up until the late 1940s...In fact, when Shulton introduced Old Spice in 1937, it was initially marketed to women. If John Tyler, Ulysses Grant, or Andrew Jackson (especially) wore cologne, they probably would be too embarrassed to admit it.
