Ramblings of a MilkCrate

Thanks guys! Great weekend all around. Except for an auction I lost to a sniper. Beat me by exactly $1 in the last 3 seconds.

Back to the grind and back to the Proraso Red. As I mentioned before, I will probably use this during the work week until it is finished. Just because. So just some quick notes on the shave. Standard shave all the way through and I am BBS for the win! Man I still dig this scent. Decided to start the week off with a glug of the AS and everything is right as rain! Let's do this!

Home front-
About a month ago I mentioned an ominous cloud, or front, that was approaching our township. It's more of a force I guess, but not a weather storm. This oppressive force cause much anxiety when it was on the horizon and moving in. It had settled into the township and has people on edge. There has been much wringing of hands to go around. Then the township started to settle with facing the inevitable. Like prey captured in the grip of the predator. Over the weeks, there was a silence that was deafening, but there were random whispers somewhere that could be heard from time to time. Our township has heard of this force settling into towns and leaving great sorrow in it's wake. We speculate that this one will pass in about a week. That will be good and bad ... just depending. The township is nervous again and the force once again intensifies before it exits. It will leave destruction in it's wake. I continue to keep moving along with my days and chores as best I can. There is nothing that can be done, but to ride this out and hope that our home is still standing when the clouds pass.

Life is good!

Almost forgot to mention that we saw a wet shaving display at the Fair. It was not very large but they had a display of various Solingen SR, some shavettes and DE razors. Maybe a dozen SR and a Dozen DE on display, and 4 shavettes. They also had a knot display that included some used (but clean) badgers.

They were actually selling Merkur razors, small Jagger refill pucks, small Alum blocks and several types of DE blades. Super nice guys and they even showed me how a 3 piece razor comes apart to load a blade. There was an interested person there, so I didn't want to interrupt a possible sale. Wish I had my phone to get a couple of pics.

Wait.... how do you go anywhere without your phone? Do you have some other way of keeping up with the forum while you're out?

Had it charging in the car and just forgot it. But I did have the essential EDC stuff :)

Sounds like Steven king's The Fog
So what you're saying is Stephen King is moving in?
He lives about 30 miles from my place.

The process-
Had to grab the DE this morning ... uh ... it was my dogs fault. Maybe. Anyway mixed up the kit real good this morning because I wanted to try this new to me soap. This is homemade by someone on another forum that may someday become an artisan. Or not. But either way the recipe is not available to share. He sent me two tubs, one was for the missus and is Raspberry and the other is for me and is Mahogany. Both tubs use the same soap base just a different scent. Thought I would grab the badger and see if I could make a mess. I went with a 30 second load time, but really could have stopped at 15 maybe 20. I had a bunch of lather going on, but it wasn't the wet mess that I was anticipating. The soap starts out with a lighter, sweeter scent. It's very similar to Stirling Barbershop, at least to my nose. Once you start lathering, it opens up a bit and there is a darker, heavier scent below the surface. I couldn't recognize it, maybe a wood type smell ... not sure. It intermingled with the sweeter smell and they both kinda wafted back and forth. That 30 second load may have been a bit much. I had a lot of thick, dense lather going on. I believe that was the most dense lather I have had in a soap. It provided a good deal of cushion with the DE. I never did get too much water thrown at it. Slickness seemed very good as well. I still can't get over the thickness. I had gobs of lather left for the post shave and again it was really thick. Cushion is not really my thing, I think that's what technique is for. Anyway, tomorrow I may try again with a boar and SR. I want to put the slickness through it's paces.

I went with my standard shave of WTG, XTG and ATG with no drama to report. That was just a nice easy peasy shave. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about easy peasy. As an added bonus, I am BBS for the win! Wrapped everything up and added a dab of the ASB to finish. You know everything was right as rain! The post shave on this setup was really nice. It feels different and maybe better than just a typical Nivia finish. I think tomorrow I will skip the ASB and see how the soap stands on it's own.

Home front-
Just cruising through the work week. I am off on Thursday (not a fun day off) so it's a shorter week. Nothing of much excitement to report so far. May go get me some new work shoes this coming weekend. That should be fun. I'm also still digging the Nemosine FP, it's my daily driver at work. I think that's all I have for you at the moment. Life is good!

Cool report on the new soap! One of these days, once it deplete* my soap reserves, I want to get into a little of that science. For now, making my own EO frag is pushing its way to the front of the must-try list! :ROFLMAO:

I’m in the same boat. I have a few soaps I want to use up. Then play with making soap and EO AS.

Florida Water AS

The process-
So ... mixed the kit up a bit again this morning. Grabbed the SR to really give this soap a slickness test. Uh ... the jury is still out. It could have been that I changed too many variables with the brush, razor and load time. Not sure. I went back to a 20 second load again and now I wonder what a 30 second load would yield. Loading the boar seemed a bit more pasty than I was expecting. I guess I thought my boar was holding more water than it was. Threw water at it as I shaved and still whipped up a nice lather. The cushion had dropped some and I didn't find the slickness I was looking for. That is probably on me. I will try more product and more water with my next test shave. There was that secondary scent that I smelled again this morning, it seemed a bit stronger, but not much. I still can't place it, but I don't think I care for it. I'm not sure ... hm.

40 laps on leather and then onto business. I went with my standard shave of WTG, XTG and ATG with no drama to report. Still had a nice shave, but was just expecting more in the slickness department. I still salvaged it with a wet hand where needed and I am BBS for the Win! I'll take it.

Wrapped this shave up with a splash of water and a drip dry. A glug of the AS and everything was right as rain! I know ... I know ... yesterday I said I wouldn't use an AS today. But really, what is the fun in that? The post shave feel is still nice today and I imagine the soap has a big part in that. Wow ... looking back over my shave, this review really sucks. I'll try and talk in larger circles tomorrow.

Home front-
I am off work tomorrow, but not for fun. Please send some positive energy this way, it would be greatly appreciated. And you know I'm going to say ... Life is good!

But why are you lathering up wood??? Seems a little...impossible.

Everything is going to be just fine, Tim.
