Open Comb DE Suggestion

Thanks guys I will definitely look into those. I did sign up for KJ's pass around box so that I could try a couple of those out!

I need to revisit open combs as well, Pat. When I first ventured into vintage I went from a Tech to a New SC and I quickly got rid of the New SC. I wish I just put it in the back of the cabinet, but it’s now my buddy’s travel razor so he can leave his grandfather’s Old Type at home during deployment.

I have tried a few OC and generally I prefer the SB. If you are looking for a mild OC I find the vintage Gillettes quite mild but do not like the OC teeth/blade feel. Nevertheless the Gillette NEW LC is a reasonable razor and not expensive to get on a BST or even an auction site. The modern OC GameChangers are available but the SB versions give me a better shave. If you really enjoy the OC then the smoothest modern has to be the Timeless which comes in 68 and 95 gaps - this would be my preferred OC for a truly comfortable shave.

I haven't tried a NEW long comb, but the RFB is probably the smoothest razor I own.

One issue with the vintage Gillettes is there is a lot of variance, there are a couple of Old Types, some are mild and other less so. My NEW Short comb is comparatively rough, but I find that using a top cap from a Tech smooths it out quite a bit.
A big factor is the condition, if the top cap or base is a little bit bent, the shave will be rough.

Anyway, I'll throw in the Fatip Grande to the mix. IMO the new one's are smooth and mild and they are affordable.

This is so true and why I feel @Spider and I are getting different results than each other does from them

I got into OC shaving with a Karve brass SB plated razor and then ordering additional OC plates. I ordered it in a B & C plate as a lark. It took me a while to drum up the courage to try the B plate, and I just loved it. I now have B - E plates along with a Timeless SS & Ti both .95mm OC and a Blackbird OC. I have not noticed the OC plates to be any less smooth, and the lather flow through really helps when going over the same spot more than once.

The Karve brass razor is very well built with a price of aprox $70 USD with additional plates at aprox $22 USD.
