So the cat is back and radioactive. We had to buy flushable litter which I questioned what harm would it really do to just throw away a cat size amount of radioactive waste. Glad we did because the instructions I got yesterday mention that tossing it could trigger radiation alarms at the waste facility and an investigation. We're also supposed to not spend more than 30min a day close to her and wash our hands after touching. This all lead to some official google research because she likes to sleep on the bed with us and that was a big no-no. At first I was buying into the thinking that all the precautions were just CYA and state laws for the vets. Then I saw videos of people with Geiger counters showing the radiation coming off their cats. So the cats were shut out of the bedroom last night and we got to experience cats howling at the door off and on all night. We'll see how long this lasts until we give up and take "slight risk".

Yeah as a medical professional who works peripherally in this area, the risks are real. (As part of radiology residency you have to do a certain number of high dose and low dose I-131 treatments in order to graduate and learn all the NRC regulations around these treatments).

You can find out the dose of radiation given to your cat and then work out your risk from there. If you know the starting dose and half life, you can figure out when it’s safe to be around the cat again.

The NRC sets the public radiation dose limit at 1 milliseivert (1 mSv), which is very low. Figure that you don’t really want to exposure yourself to more than 5 mSv (500 mrem), which is the dose limit for a pregnant radiation worker.

And yes all sorts of government facilities are very attuned to radiation doses, so most of this info is not hospital CYA, but actual risk to you and the larger community.

I thought you might respond :)

So, what you're saying is, it's not a bad idea to have the cat cuddle on the kid's boyfriend's lap in hopes of making him sterile.

Yup. Radiation Bait put out and here I am!

So temporary sterility in males (since most have a habit of persistently making gametes) is a non-stochastic event with a threshold dose of about 150 mSv. So that’s a lot of cuddle time (assuming the cat even has that much dose to give off). So it Wouldn’t be the best contraceptive on the market today.

I was a mix of work this weekend. Had the usual Saturday morning cutting up of tree parts to put into the yard waste bin, then cutting off more tree parts to repeat the process in a week. Then our new couch showed up to swap out for the sectional we've had for 12 years. Ever since my wife's neck surgery, she's had thick foam cushion behind her on the couch because it was so deep. This fixes that problem and creates more space in our little living room. That caused a little shuffling around and a need for a coffee table that will store blankets and I get to pick a new chair to go in a small sitting area. I'm still trying to find if my 1/2 wine barrel table will work somewhere in the house, but it's looking more like it might just need to go away. Sad days as I made it myself, but things change.

Sunday I woke up to find the youngest had some pasta in the middle of the night and left a nice red sauce stain on the new counters. So that side-tracked the day with three attempts at cleaning with the chemical we were told to use. It might be there forever, but no longer red. Also repainted and reinstalled a metal family name sign we had outside, installed some chicken wire on a section of the front gate to keep the cats in so now they can roam around in the courtyard when the weather is nice enough to leave the front door open. And lastly I got some cool sliding racks with jars for spices and such for the cabinet. They come with little stickers for the ends of them so you can read what is located where so you know exactly which rack to pull out and what level your spice is on.

Because I ask for Christmas off and we're gone this year I'll be working all this week but it should be nice and mellow. It also puts the pause button on our countdown for survey. We're up for a big 4-day survey and there should be two more hospitals in our system and then us. The won't come this week, so that means we're shooting for the week before Christmas for the first weeks of January. Just one of those things it will be nice to have behind us because of all the work that leads up to it.

If I'm not mistaken...certain Dad laws permit you to combine these two occurrences.......the sauce-splashing criminal can now live outside....since you provided a barrier to prevent them from wandering.

Looking for something different, I decided to pull out everyone's favorite folding pocket razor. I found this time it has an additional safety feature. Given the head is just held on with magnets if you come in at too steep of an angle, the head just pops off instead of the blade digging into your skin. This also happens if you have coarse whiskers and shave too fast apparently.

I had what could have been a small ingrown on the neckle area. This razor went over it like a F1 car shooting over a loose manhole cover on the Vegas track. There was some damage and a bit of sparks with the alum.
