Hmmm, thinking showing off both your chest hairs might help win them over?I’m also going to fight the man and resist wearing a tie while I’m there in MS visiting. Living life on the edge!

Sooooo true! You would be amazed at how often this happens.I don't need you, you need me and this is how we do it in California. I ain't adapting to y'all
Lol maybe not that resistant. I do need to be myself at least. They need to know who they’re really getting, it’ll come out eventually.I don't need you, you need me and this is how we do it in California. I ain't adapting to y'all............ guaranteed return flight ticket
Oh, I know. I was trying to gently make a point without offending....Sooooo true! You would be amazed at how often this happens.
A local church hired a pastor from California and he decided the was going to teach these country hicks how things were done. Within 6 months he split the church and 2 months later went back to CA leaving a handful of hurting people behind.Oh, I know. I was trying to gently make a point without offending....
Not related to the Congregation I'm with but just simply the attitude when moving south in general, I decided to come and embrace what I loved about it and not tell people how we did things in Pennsylvania. I knew already, "They don't care how it's done there" I have been welcomed and called a "Transplant" not the D Yankee term normally used with Northerners.A local church hired a pastor from California and he decided the was going to teach these country hicks how things were done. Not a southern thing at all. I'm from MN and am considered a FlatLander and From AWAY by the locals but have ministered in 4 different churches and been accepted. It is all in the attitude.but just simply the attitude when moving south in general
Also sorry. Not sure what "keys are Zipped" is though probably one of those stupid Southern saying that we don't use were I'm from!Chris, my sincere apologies for any derailment here. My keys are zipped.
No apology needed. I welcome these things from you fellas.Chris, my sincere apologies for any derailment here. My keys are zipped.
If I said lips are zipped/sealed, I'd have been corrected that he can't hear me anywayAlso sorry. Not sure what "keys are Zipped" is though probably one of those stupid Southern saying that we don't use were I'm from!
Welcome to the Cadre "Where one can never win".If I said lips are zipped/sealed, I'd have been corrected that he can't hear me anyway
By all means be yourself. No one respects a phony. Just remember ministry is about meeting people where they are at.So do you guys think I’m wrong to not conform completely on the dress? Or are you just cautioning not to be too bull headed about changing the MS small town vibe?
I’m not going there, I feel, to change how things are done. Compromise is always on the table. I think though it’s important to also not give a false representation of who I am, because some of that is going to slip out eventually, as much as I do try to fit myself in and find a rhythm to ministry there. I’m not there to be a total robot to do things exactly as they say, that would not be ministry, that would be a job. I’ve seen the disaster though, like John mentions, of new (especially young) pastors/ministers wanting to come into a place and totally overhaul everything to their own ideas. Never a good thing.

Well put Don, thank you!Well...here are my two cents that are probably only worth a half a cent. And full disclosure...I currently am Catholic and a really bad one at that. But as a participant of some really bad church splits and my upbringing in the Evangelical circles I think I have an opinion on this. First Impressions are everything! If you put a person off at the beginning, you may have a hard time reaching that person in the long run. That being said...you need to be yourself. So maybe present yourself in a manner consistent with what the congregation is used to...but with a bit of your flair. I am definitely not saying you need to wear a three piece suit. But your actions can be offensive even if you don't mean to be. If this is a long term gig...they will get to know you over time and all is well. But if this is short term...does it really hurt to meet them on their terms? Anyway...just my thoughts.
Great shave by the way!
I'm dyslexic so I saw "I'll be bringing the nose ring." And I'm like "that will impress "I’ll be bringing the noose
