Growing up I was taught that it was a great example of syncretism (meshing of different sets of beliefs; in this case between Native and European cultures) but apparently it’s much more complicated than that. Origins, history, and similarities to other festivities

i knew immediately what day it was as i got to work this morning, and had to deal with those dead from the neck up and the knees down!
Mock epitaphs are nothing new; my father's dad thought he was hugely amusing regaling a captive audience at Christmas with slideshows of his holidays, and the familiar start of this nonsense for himself that he'd composed. All began with 'Here lie the bones of Alfred Knox...'
He never wanted to hear the limericks i could raise in a couple of minutes oddly enough.
