Finally had the time to give CBL Dread Pirate Roberts a lather( henceforth to be called DPR, not to be confused with DPRK).

CBL says Apothecary Tallow Base
top notes - sea kelp, salty sea minerals, cucumber, mint and citrus
heart notes - Fresh juniper berries, hints of real bay leaf, smoked cedar, rich Agar-woods, Sandalwood and exotic cured tobaccos
other notes - Herbal Caraway, Vetiver and Pink Peppercorn

I enjoyed wafting the scent of this one every day for a week or so, trying to understand this monster of a scent. wow..

even better scent as it lathers. great performance, really enjoy this base. i think this is one of my all time favs, that is saying a lot. and i haven't received any financial compensation for saying that at all, just the opposite.. the last couple of releases from CBL are ridiculous.

I'm def waiting anxiously for the next release.. maybe it will be called "Never go in against a Sicilian when DEATH is on the line!"

I love this scent. I used the aftershave tonic this morning as a follow up to CBL's Norse Spice. DPR is a great scent. I intend to get the post shave oil in this scent as well.

are you guys posting about this scent and i've just overlooked the threads? SOTD & journals that i've not seen?

hmm. i kind of like the idea of a post shave oil, hard to describe my feelings for the CBL tonics, i feel like i like them a lot, but - it could totally be the shape of the bottle. i know that sounds ridiculous, i should probably decant the tonics into a bottle i prefer and see if my feelings change. what's more ridic, is that i think it's the neck of the bottle shape. that curve and cap, i just have a heard time with it. as a contracts, i take no issue with the TRUFF sauce bottle shape, but other woozy style bottles like chohula i just can't get past for some reason for AS. maybe a wide mouth woozy or boston round.

It's been mentioned a fair amount, but not yet in a dedicated thread. But it deserves it. It's one of his best scents to date!

Cholula has a very narrow mouth, unlike the woozy bottle that Chris is using. If a wider mouth is what you desire.... just pop the reducer off. I really like it, since it's a thicker milk-like tonic, I can shake it like hot sauce into my hand and 2-3 shakes and I have the right amount for my face.

Well shaved my friend - I love DPR & Hello - both fantastic scents and shave products - I’m hoping the next scent will be a impromptu Christmas release dedicated to Miracle Max!

I still need to pick this one up! LOL

CBL is killing it!

it's not so much a wider mouth, i think it's just woozies in general are not my thing aesthetically, tbh CBLS bottle works well enough and i enjoy the tonic, i guess i like a fancy lads bottle.

I've been reusing cholula bottles for a while for some AS, so I never though much about it. But I can see what you mean. Honestly, I like that fact that it's different than other Artisan bottles.

I appreciate all the kind words and fabulous suggestions. Yes a miracle max and Sicilian themed scent are planned, as is a fire swamp fougere. Sadly, I am having difficulty coming up with good scents that fill the bill. I do have a fireswamp scent made but I am not certain it would meet expectations. Perhaps I will send a sample to a few of you to get some feedback. I thought I had the Sicilian figured out but it was far from what I had intended. Ideas/suggestions are welcomed!

As for the tonic bottles, my first priority was to find a 3oz glass bottle. I would loved to have gone with a flask style (like Fine uses) but I had mixed feelings about looking like Fine. I am/was terribly careful to avoid stepping on the toes of the artisans that came before me so I wanted to avoid looking like any other artisan. In the end I decided on the woozie bottle style because it was unique AND I too save and reuse various hot sauce bottles. In fact, had I figured out a way to easily fill the bottles I might have gone with a true hot sauce bottle. Believe it or not, the 3oz woozie’s are difficult to obtain and have gone way up in price. I fear I will one day have to go with a generic Boston round but I hope to hold that back for a while. Funny thing about the tonic is, I never intended to offer an aftershave and certainly didn’t intend to keep offering it once I made my first batch. I only made my tonic to prove I had the ability to compete with any “top shelf” product being offered. The price point is FAR below profitable but I am reluctant to change it until I absolutely must.

*original or not, I understand how a 3oz woozie may not look or ‘feel’ like a proper aftershave …but I DO think it fits somewhat into the apothecary theme (just not in the ‘old school’ way)

I’d happy DPR is so enjoyable…thanks @Luecke3262 for sending me down the Princess Bride theme trail!

@CBLindsay, not a thing... if thats truly the only thing i can quibble about, then thats pretty damn awesome.. tbh, the fine are kind of boring flasks.. i'm super partial to the ADP or TdH ASL/balm bottles..

@CBLindsay I ordered some cigar shop cowboy from you a couple years ago.

I really enjoyed your base, and the lather it produced.

When I look at your site now, it is a bit more complex, with some artwork that is like the old tubs, and some not.

How many soap bases do you have? And what are they called?

Miracle Max - chocolate note!

Sicilian
Ideas/suggestions are welcomed!
IMO The Miracle Max should have a chocolate note and I was thinking for the Sicilian - a type of Colonia - but do a twist - maybe tomato leaf or just some boozy note (because you can’t go wrong with a boozy note) and call the note Iocane 😂
