Gillette has another DE razor

Well Gillette has done it again. It started with the Heritage DE, late last year. Now they are selling a new DE at Walgreens. They have a whole new line of products under the King C Gillette label. Most importantly to us is a Razor and a pack of blades. The funny thing is, they are marketing the DE razor mostly to guys with beards, they are saying the “closed comb” allows for more precise edging of sideburns and beards. Lol.

Now, I honestly do not intend on opening mine up, since the box is sealed. I got it more as a collector piece. But I may open it later. But since I’m sure someone is going to ask what the razor actually looks like, I found these photos:

Interesting. Plenty of talk about the last release, and even some praise. I'm trying to remember the vendor they contract for the AoS razors... Was it Muhle?

For a Zamak razor, $30 isn't bad. Especially if this is like a Muhle / EJ design. Price on par or cheaper, I think.

Hey, maybe it'll bring more light to the hobby? More converts, more sales... more sales, more vendors?

I notice on the box handle made in China. Blades made in Russia. So where is the head made?
Actually, I just looked up the Heritage. It’s handle was made in the US, and the cap/base in Germany. I’m assuming the cap/base of this razor is the same.

KJ, everyone knows you never buy just one of something. Go ahead and open your back-up.
They only had one....

But no, I wasn’t planning on buying two. Didn’t buy two heritage razors either.

I see this a continuation of the Heritage Inspired razor that they sold on Amazon last year and which is still available in a nice case with a tuck of blades. The head appears to be a Muhle R89. I don't like the handle and already have an Edwin Jagger DE89. Same head. And I definitely have no interest in another zamak razor made in China. What I am curious about though is what those blades are. Are they Gillette Platinums? Gillette Silver Blues?

I have the Gillette Heritage. It is a good shaver with an EJ style head. The handle is very light weight. I prefer my RazoRock MJ-90, but that is a 'no brainer' since that head is machined aluminum, it has two base plates, and the handle is Titanium. The Heritage is a decent razor at a decent price with some collector value, if only for the case.

This new KCG razor interests me for a few reasons. First, it appears to have a different head. The pictures that @Spider posted above make the head look more like a Merkur head than an EJ one. It intrigues me, so I want to give it a try. Second, since the Heritage was good, I expect this one will be also. Third, I still hold out hope that Gillette will bring back the Tech or the Super Speed if they see that a market exists for new DE razors in the US. Fourth, RAD is a thing.

I am a little disappointed by the blades, however. $0.60 per blade is a little steep for a Platinum coated DE blade. I can get Russian Gillette Platinums from Ebay for $0.16 per blade, but I will buy at least one pack to give them a good try (and to send some to @Cvargo for a Bad Blade review, if he doesn't get some for himself). Still, I expect that they will be good blades even if they are overpriced. My guess is that they are a re-branded Gillette Platinum. Also, the packaging of the blades bothers me. It is wasteful. It seems like a standard blister card would have been a better choice than a box.

Good points @dkeester
I agree the packaging is overkill.... but, at least it’s all cardboard. A blister pack could be considered worse due to the plastic. But they are packaging everything in this line, the same way, so a blister pack would not fit the uniformity they are going for.

Also, like you, I’m in for the razor, if for no other reason, than to send a message to Gillette that there is a demand for them. Maybe some day they’ll do it right.

Well, now I am disappointed. Walgreens.com is telling me that they are sold out online on the razor and that no store within 25 miles has it in stock.

I guess I will have to wait to pick one up.

I'm a sucker for this stuff. I'll definitely be getting one.

Dave, you and I both know how that goes.... we say we’re going to stop spending or slow down, then a few weeks/months go by and guess what?!?! It ebbs and flows man. Just part of the journey!
