Thanks, Chris yeah, we’ve talked about that but even our vet says it’s not really documented how effective that Vaccine is it’s just really surprising because he is usually he alerts us when there’s a rattlesnake and runs away so I’m thinking he was sniffing under the shed or something and got nailedRough stuff. Those eyes say it all.
A little late now but I give my dogs a rattle snake vaccine twice a year. It's not ideal becuase it only aids in antibody production for Western Diamond Back and we have BOTH Western Diamond back and Mojave Green in our area. There is question/debate how effective the vaccine is to begin with and even in the best of cases it still requires some amount of additional medical intervention. But i figure since we are most likely to encounter snakes while out jeeping or camping having a little extra time to get to the vet is a bonus. I buy the vaccine by the box direct from the manufacture so for the price of a couple doses fromt he vet I can vaccinate the entire Lindsay pack 2-3 times.
Yeah. The questionable effectiveness and potential for reaction to the vaccine (particularly in breeds like my bulldog) make the vaccine a big question mark. I’d love to think it’s providing a benefit but the only real answer is avoidance. Even training won’t do a lot for surprise interactions unless your dog is really intense and attentive. Looks like Kona found a pretty large snake rather than a very young one. Thanks, Chris yeah, we’ve talked about that but even our vet says it’s not really documented how effective that Vaccine is it’s just really surprising because he is usually he alerts us when there’s a rattlesnake and runs away so I’m thinking he was sniffing under the shed or something and got nailed
As I mentioned earlier, usually he alerts us. The last one he alerted is too was about a 7 foot diamondback. We had a 6 foot Mojave a couple years ago in the yard but like you said, I think what he did is he stuck his nose underneath the shed chasing the squirrel that we have and I think that it just startled that snake because where the bites are if you look, he had to have his nose down and he stands pretty high, so if the snake would’ve come from below, the strike would’ve happened on his lower chin I think what happened is either stuck his head under the shed or stuck his head into a holeYeah. We’ve had several reported sightings from the guys who go off road. The snakes are definitely out and about. There are parts of my yard that could harbor a snake or two but for the most part we’ve limited hiding spots and made things pretty inhospitable. The side effect of course is a good population of very fat ground squirrels
Hopefully Kona uses this event as a great learning opportunity. Keep an eye on that nose, probably going to get some necrosis as the swelling goes down.
Well, as KJ knows I’ve become very nice to snakes usually, I trap them and send them otherwise but this one attacked my dog so if I find him, he’s gonna be cut up into little pieces and put in a deep fryerBurn down the neighborhood. Move. That's the correct response.
