An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

If you watch more videos you'll find KJ is an anomaly with no rinsing. Not a bad thing or a good thing, just a different thing

Good lessons for you shave! Personally the no rinsing thing is a peeve for my own shave, I get too messy if I don’t rinse after a few strokes.

Its hilarious how you’ve turned “Mammoth painting” into a thing. Good on you!

I decided that mammoth painting was easier than mammoth hunting. Here's some pictures of me mammoth & mastodon hunting with my big Clovis Spear.

It might be too late to turn back

For today I like the less rinsing. Who knows about tomorrow. I'll say it is an art to keep all that lathered soap balancing on the cap without plopping somewhere you don't want it to.

Great journal, with amazing photos. That's the first color photo of a mastodon I've seen. Excellent hobby. ?

I have to say that this might be my new favorite thread! Really enjoying your approach to wet shaving. I might actually be learning something on your journey! I'm really enjoying reading your life experiences also!

LOL. Too late, I'm validated!

Whoa, I'm an artiste!

Glad the technique works for you. I make it a point in my videos to point out the fact that I'm not rinsing, because it drives the rest of these water wasting, inefficient shavers crazy!

Not sure about the artiste part so dont go too far.

I am just as efficient as you are remember.

I'm glad you are enjoying them. I figure if nothing else it will provide some fond memories of when everyone was starting wet shaving.

I like your approach to wet shaving. If I can get that good of a results someday from a 2 pass / clean-up shave I'll be happy for sure. You and the other V-loggers make it look so easy.

Today is Wednesday so it means we have to get everyone out the door at the same time so I tend to not wet shave on these days. I decided to do something different today and have some observations. I usually shave in the shower with a cart but today I decided the Gillette SS DE was going to make at least a WTG pass. I used the canned shaving cream and finished with a cart.

Immediately I noticed that canned shaving cream is nowhere near as slick as shaving soap. It appears slick with a cart because of the lubricating strip they put on them or at least that's what I'm guessing. With the straight-up DE it felt like shaving soap that was too thick and dry. It's funny because a month ago I would not have known a good lather from a poor one or if it had too much water or not enough, so I guess I'm learning something. Knowing this, more rinsing of the DE was necessary to keep it slick enough not to cause problems. The glide factor was pretty much not there with the canned shaving cream. It's definitely engineered to work with carts only.

The second thing I noticed was just how much more pliable my facial skin was in the hot shower. Cold water shaving really firms up the skin and does make the stubble stand up better. I must admit though, the hot shave felt better and more luxurious than cold shaving. I think my cold shaving gives better overall results though.

So my XTG and ATG passes were with the cart but I did notice the WTG pass with the DE took quite a bit more off than if I'd used the cart. Overall, BBS with a few places on my cheeks that are DFS+ because they missed my DE XTG passes that really do a much better job than the cart. No redness or irritation and the shave felt great.

My post shave routine was the same except today I splashed with some Captain's Choice Sandalwood AS followed by my usual Nivea AS balm. It combined with the citrus smell of the Nivea gave a pleasant scent overall. The Nivea faded quickly but the CC AS has lingered. The AS in no way compares to the lasting scent of mammoth painting of the left over shaving soap lather. I kid you not, when the hot water hit me this morning it heated things up and I could still smell the RR XXX scent from yesterday. If you haven't tried mammoth painting, give it a whirl at least once.

Maybe I'll even start a little subgroup someday with a little reward gift from me to those who join the mammoth painters and incorporate that into their shaving experience Of course you have to have some chest hair for you to get any benefit from it so that may unintentionally exclude a few of the chest hair challenged individuals

On the personal side, I've been a longtime collector of Indian Artifacts. I really enjoy going out in plowed fields and finding the artifacts that the plow turns up. Here's a couple of pictures showing the points just how I found them in the field before I picked them up. The rush you get knowing that your hand was the next to touch that point since the ancient one who discarded it or lost it thousands of years ago is unmatched.

Great update!

Fun to enjoy a nice warm water shave, even if it was with a cart! I do enjoy them for the experience a bit more than cold or cool water shaves!

Thanks. And I've been doing this for over 8 years. It took me a long time (a few years) to get as comfortable with the whole process as I am now. It's a lot of muscle memory and routine now. I went through multiple techniques and variations before finding what worked best for me. It's a journey. Don't get discouraged if something doesn't work, or if you head down a wrong path for a while. You get it figured out in time. And sometimes, something wont work for you now, but later down the road it does.

Yup, the more I do wet shaving the more I realize it's a journey of sorts. Like Frodo and Sam you set out believing your journey will look a certain way but when you reach the end you realize it looks nothing like you thought it would (and you might be missing a finger
