An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

All that mammoth painting they may have just left him in the waiting area as a room freshener

I'm still at the clinic......just kidding. Here in NY there are two drugs you can't get anymore: Hydrocodone & antibiotics. Up here they tell you every time that it's just a virus, but as someone prone to bronchitis and worse I know what to point out and they are more than happy to give me antibiotics which turn me around almost overnight. Officially, probably I had a virus that created the perfect environment for a secondary bacterial infection which is why I felt better then got worse again. I should feel much better tomorrow and be back to chasing mammoths with my paint brush in a day or two

You know, all I have to do is puff the shirt a few times and I'm a human air freshener

Hope you feel better soon Mike.

We’re supposed to be getting a little of snow and a lot of ice Sunday into Monday. Gonna be pretty nasty everywhere in the northeast I think.

As a guy that used to get Bronchitis yearly...I feel your pain. It's interesting that you mention the antibiotics being hard to get. I have noticed over the past couple years that docs have been less likely to prescribe and antibiotic than they have in the past. For the most part...I think this is a good thing! In my opinion, antibiotics have been WAY over prescribed for things that we should be able to heal on our own. Different conditions are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics of late that if we continued on the path we were going...antibiotics would be useless in the near future. The problem arises when there is someone like you who really needs it and will respond well to it. Long way of saying...I am glad you got the medicine you need to get better!

I have had to play catch up on your journal this morning and skimmed through a few things. But that powder horn restore at the end of December was absolutely wonderful! Hope you have a restful weekend and stay warm. We have a cold front coming through here in Louisiana, but instead of snow we are getting tornadoes. take care my friend!

Hey Don, yup they have over prescribed antibiotics but I think that's where the doc needs to know the patient. My regular doc knows that I get these and she's not hesitant at all. I loved the days of old when your doc would call in prescriptions for the whole family knowing they all have the same thing. I had a childhood small town doc that would suture your cut head on Monday, remove gramp's hemorrhoids on Tuesday, and remove Uncle Joe's suspicious mole on Wednesday. He was dang good at what he did and that's where you went. Now you'd get sent to the ER for the cut on the head, a proctologist for the hemmies, and a skin doc for the mole

That horn restore was fun. I got to blacksmith for it and woodwork. I love restoring things to their original condition. You look at something like that and it was in a box of junk at a garage sale because it was missing so much that it wasn't really displayable. Now, even when I'm gone, it will be hanging somewhere in someone's house. Pretty cool.

Ok, I won't whine about the snow when you all are facing tornadoes

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that you think "that's where the doc needs to know the patient." You are absolutely correct. Medicine has become such a business now that everyone wants to send their patients to specialists for everything! When really what you need is just someone who understands the patient like you said. Take the time to know them. It's called bedside manner...and is extremely lacking these days!

The tornadoes didn't occur. Well sort of. We had a rotation just north of where I live (about 30 minutes away). But nothing touched down. But we did have several hours of 30 mile per hour sustained winds and gusts of up to nearly 70 mph. But all is well. It's a little chilly here but will be sunny. All is well. You sir...still have to deal with the snow! I have a sis-in-law who lives in PA and they have already called her off of work for Monday because of the snow storm you all are getting! Stay warm and safe my friend!

We got about 18 inches here which is less than I expected, but it's turned bitterly cold. It's now just 8 degrees with a nice breeze out there making it feel like zero and the winds are expected to pick up tonight and tomorrow causing wind chills of 20 - 30 below zero. With that said, I was prickly as a cactus this morning after skipping a shave yesterday so I decided to get a decent 2 pass shave in. But this is the perfect weather that mammoths like so I shouldn't complain. I will say while out blowing snow I came in and got a vest to wear under my Carhart because the wind was cutting right through it. My mammoth hair wasn't cutting it today

Today's Shave: Shave #93

Razor: Parker Variant - Graphite handle
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
Brush: Maggard Razors Synthetic smaller brush knot
Soap: Mystic Water Bay Rum
Bowl: Black Salsa Bowl (plastic) w/ textured rings inside
Pre Shave: Wash with soap in the shower
Total Razor on Face Time: 10 minutes

Post Shave: Cold water rinse, Witch Hazel (Walmart Brand) face only, Cold rinse. Every Man Jack Post Shave Balm to the face and neck. Mammoth Painting.

Now that my scourging from shave number 92 was gone after a day off from wet shaving, I was eager to be smooth again but not eager enough to jump right into a 3 pass. I loaded a new blade in my Variant and got right to work after working up a great bowl lather. Set at 3.0, the Variant really had no issues cutting through the scruff and I got my usual for a 2 pass shave. DFS + / BBS everywhere. Heck I'm still DFS now at 6:45 pm and loving it. Felt great.

I decided to just do the AS balm today since I knew I'd be out in the cold a lot blowing snow and raking my roof. That was a good call and my face feels pretty good tonight. My hip complains loudly about blowing snow, but you just have to suck it up and be a man and get it done. My bronchitis didn't appreciate all that time out in the cold, but I should survive.

Nice come back shave Mike! Good luck with all that snow, we were able to sneak by with just a little rain. Still single digit temps tonight into tomorrow though.

The wind chill might not be as bad if you’re not going outside with a chest full of wet lather ?

So...what you are saying is that...it's T-Shirt weather?

Keep that bronchitis under control man. I know you got to do what you gotta do...but only do what you must and get better!

Glad you only got rain. I've lived in the north all my life and the older I get the less I like winter. Oh well, you just have to roll with it or move right

I do towel dry the mammoth hair you know

Actually, while I was working on clearing snow yesterday I'd get those nice puffs of warm air up chest and the Bay Rum scent made it tolerable. I've found as your body heats up, the mammoth painting effect doubles. There's no downside to mammoth painting

For my buddy in Alaska this is a normal day. When he comes down to visit and it's in the 20's & 30's he's walking around in a T-Shirt. I'm feeling a lot better today if I can shake the cough.

This morning I woke up to -5 degrees and a very stiff wind. I'm off today so I took my time and did another great 2-pass shave.

Today's Shave: Shave #94

Razor: Parker Variant - Graphite handle
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue
Brush: Maggard Razors Synthetic larger brush knot
Soap: Mystic Water Lavender Lime
Bowl: Black Salsa Bowl (plastic) w/ textured rings inside
Pre Shave: Wash with soap in the shower
Total Razor on Face Time: 10 minutes

Post Shave: Cold water rinse, Witch Hazel (Walmart Brand) face only, Cold rinse. Every Man Jack Post Shave Balm to the face and
neck. Mammoth
Painting.

The lather went fine, maybe a little on the wet side, but I made it work with some extra lathering time in the bowl. Incidentally, when I was talking to Michelle from Mystic Water I asked her if the Lavender Lime had a hint of menthol in it and she confirmed that it did. For my taste, whatever amount of menthol she placed in this soap is perfect. It makes my skin feel cool and refreshing but not frozen off my skull like some can.

Being another 2 pass shave I did a WTG and my XTG/ATG second pass. This has been working great. I had some redness on my right cheek that I really think is coming from a XTG pass that is really ATG in just that tiny area. I can live with it. I spent more time on clean-up than I should have and just had to quit before I caused something annoying to start the week off with. DFS+ in all areas and I enjoyed the shave.

Given that our heat has been on constantly due to the bitter cold, I elected again for the EMJ AS balm on both the neck and face. I really like that stuff.

Getting caught up. Looks like you are feeling better. And the snow is hitting us today. Just keeps coming down. This has been a wetter than normal winter for us, which I guess is a good thing since we are technically a desert.

Stay warm

Having the heater run all the time is not something I envy. Especially if I had a wood burning furnace. Glad the EMJ is working well for you as a moisturizer.

Seems like none of us can win this year with the weather. Yup, feeling better but have that nagging cough that won't go away. When it starts up in the middle of the night, I move out on the couch so my wife can get a good night's sleep.

I have an oil furnace, but that's just as bad. It came with the house unfortunately, but we are looking at other options. I wish I could afford geothermal and solar. My property is set up perfect for solar, but I'd have to drill another well to run the heat transfer loop for geothermal and it's just not something we can even think about doing at this time. Looks like EMJ will be in my shaving tools for a long while

We had oil heat when we first moved in to our house. It was ridiculously expensive. Luckily we were able to transfer to natural gas heat.

BTU wise, oil heat is the most efficient in the sense that you get the most heat for your buck but it costs more for sure. I burned wood for 3 years, but we weren't warmer and in the end it cost the same so why split the wood, stack it and have to carry it in, tend the fire, etc is we weren't warmer? Now we are onto looking at propane. Our current furnace is only 86% efficient so we are thinking the jump to something 95% or more with a new propane furnace would see a big difference. I'll have a lot of duct work to do to save money on the install.
