An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

Drum roll please................The Variant arrived yesterday and I just had my first shave this morning with it.

Today's Shave: Shave #59

Razor: Parker Variant - Graphite handle
Blade: Gillette Super Blue
Brush: Maggard Razors Synthetic
Soap: Mystic Water Bay Rum
Bowl: Walmart Salsa Bowl (plastic)
Pre Shave: Wash with soap
Total Razor on Face Time: 15 minutes

Post Shave: Cold water rinse, Witch Hazel (Walmart Brand) face only, Cold rinse. Dry face, then immediately applied Nivea AS Balm to the face only. Mammoth Painting, rubbing left over soap on the neck then rinsing.

Let me first talk about the Parker Variant. I've bee researching razors for a few weeks now and pretty much knew what to expect when unboxing this razor. I absolutely love the graphite handle which gives it a more sophisticated look. Early Variants had a problem with the graphite finish and black finishes coming off because they were a powder coating, but they fixed this problem with a new process that now bonds the graphite finish in the same way things are chromed so this finish isn't supposed to come off. My expectations were fully met when I examined this razor and the quality of everything. The knurling is excellent and everything seemed spot on upon inspection. It came with a tuck of Parker razors as well and the razor cost less than $60. Some reviewers complained about the price, but from my perspective carts cost me $12 a month to be used and pitched. 5 months of that and you've got the money to buy a high quality DE razor. I think we all remember buying a new Mach whatever razor and paid $30 or more for it, so that puts the price in perspective. Let's get to the shave.

After a lather of MW I was set. I skipped any PS oil because I wanted to really evaluate the Variant's performance for my shaves without any aide from anything but the shaving soap. Instantly I picked up the Variant and the weight felt wonderful. Loading a blade was super easy and easy to align correctly. WTG pass felt like true effortless shaving. Set at 1.2 to start felt way too mild so I increased it to 1.5. I can't say enough how wonderful and smooth this razor felt. You could tell the razor was in charge and there was absolutely no reason to apply any pressure whatsoever. After this first pass I was smoother than the Gillette SS and the QShave, but the most noticeable thing was that my face didn't feel like a razor had been on it. Finding the proper angle with the Variant was pretty easy. XTG pass was equally as great and it got me in the DFS realm. I had to increase the razor setting to 2.0 because 1.5 wasn't cutting anything - so wow, what a great pass. ATG pass was effortless as well. I did have to back the razor down to 1.0 / 1.5 setting for areas around my lips that were still sore from yesterday's rough shave. Clean-up.......ah hum.....well, I'd still be there cleaning up right now if I didn't force myself to stop chasing the dolphin that was within sight for the first time in my wet shaving history. At 1.0, you can clean and buff until your heart is satisfied and it's not irritating. Overall, the closest shave I've ever had. I'm not fully confident I achieved a DBBS, but BBS+ in some areas with the rest being BBS. The only areas of irritation are what was left from yesterday's rough shave. I can tell that the Variant didn't do any damage because the witch hazel didn't sting in those areas. I'm very happy with this razor and there isn't one bad thing I can say about it at this point. As I put the Variant away this morning I heard a collective sigh from all my other razors in the cabinet.

Awesome shave! You know you've hit DSBBS when you rub you face and say, oh s*** that's smooth!

I may have been there!

Update, I'm still nearly BBS after 2 pm today. This has never been the case with any of my shaves. I'm usually getting some sand paper by 10:30 am and by now I'm feeling sandy in all directions. This is fabulous! I've read about guys maintaining smoothness most of the day but never really got there. Dang cool! At this rate I'll be DFS at bedtime. I'm hoping this will be a common occurrence.

Nice. I've been getting really curious about the Variant lately.

KJ, you'll like the it especially at that price point. Seems they had issues early on with blade gap and alignment, but they got a hold of QC issues so now we are purchasing the best of the Variants. I've never tried Parker blades before, but they get high marks as well. At $57 on Amazon you can't go too wrong with that.

Being shave #60 you'd think I'd have something epic planned..........nope, didn't realize it was #60.

Today's Shave: Shave #60

Razor: Parker Variant - Graphite handle
Blade: Gillette Super Blue
Brush: Maggard Razors Synthetic
Soap: Mystic Water Bay Rum
Bowl: Walmart Salsa Bowl (plastic)
Pre Shave: PS Oil / Wash with soap
Total Razor on Face Time: 18 minutes

Post Shave: Cold water rinse, Witch Hazel (Walmart Brand) face only, Cold rinse. Dry face, then immediately applied Nivea AS Balm to the face only. Mammoth Painting.

Wow, 2 whole months worth of wet shaving (prob
ably been at it for 2 1/2 months counting all the cart shaves in between and non-shaving days). Just the other day I went back and read some of my first journal entries to be reminded that I have made some progress in this journey. I still have a long way to go to find my groove in all of this. Where I'd like to be after a year is have my gear dialed in and getting great, irritation free shaves at will. It'd be nice to be there by shave #150, but let's just wait and see. This is a marathon, and some days I tend to sprint wanting to be ahead of where my skills are presently.

Let's get into the shave. I'm trying to clear up the irritation from that last rough shave, and the Variant is helping tremendously with this. After some pre-shave oil and a good lather I started my first WTG pass with the razor set at 1.5. One thing I forgot to touch on is that the Variant has excellent audio feedback. This helps me a lot because the bathroom fan is on and it's nice to have that audio attaboy telling me I'm letting the Variant do its job. I went slowly today really trying to not irritate those areas from the last rough shave. Felt super. In fact, if I were braver I bet I could set the razor at 3.0 and get a super close first pass, but the goal is to get rid of redness so I'll have to wait on that experiment. XTG was equally as well as I dialed the razor up to 2.0. I dialed the razor back to 1.5 for the ATG pass just as an experiment to see if I liked it. I think it felt better. Instead of using my cart for this pass on my neck I dialed the razor back to 1.0, crossed my fingers and did my neck. No harm from it and no irritation, so this is the first piece of the puzzle for getting completely rid of the cart. I said to myself that I wasn't going to do any clean-up, but yup you guessed it, I dialed the razor back to 1.0 just for a couple areas and 3 or 4 minutes later I forced myself to stop chasing the dolphin. I heard that dolphin splash somewhere out there, but I had to let her go this morning

Overall, BBS with some areas at the DFS+ level but not as fine as yesterday due to cutting the clean-up short. Going slowly, it actually took me much longer to shave than yesterday but I was rewarded with less redness so the Variant is helping to clear up the last vestiges of that rough shave a few days ago. I didn't notice that the pre-shave oil did much of anything. I was hoping it would aide the Variant in clearing up the redness in my cheeks in a few tiny areas. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't, I just don't really know.

What I Changed: Pre-Shave Oil added, Increased razor setting on first WTG pass to 1.5, Went for the ATG pass on my neck with the Variant set at 1.0, Skipped pulling the mammoth painted soap up to the neck during the rinsing.

Tomorrow: I'm seriously think about seeing how great of a 2 pass shave the Variant can give me. Perhaps set the WTG pass at 2.0 on the razor and 2.0 at a XTG pass. It'd be interesting to see what a quick shave like this can do. If I could get a DFS or DFS + 2 pass shave I might consider moving to that every other day to give my face a break. I'm even betting a nice 2 pass shave with some quick clean-up would get me there. I think I will try it.

Close encounter of the dolphin kind! Then the dolphin was like...

Good job though! Good goals.

I absolutely love my Variant. EXCELLENT razor.

I love the Variant too Chad. I don't have a huge experience base, but it seems like a high quality razor that looks nice and performs excellently.

Your journal makes for excellent reading. Before you know it, today's shave will be a regular occurrence. Enjoy your shaves!

I one day realized in my journal that I stopped chasing the dolphin and ended up accidentally catching it more often than I didn’t.

In your two months of shaving I would bet that you have learned AND improved more than just about anyone else!

I have tried your two pass theory a few times and I actually like it a lot! If you are looking for a solid shave that you don't have to be super smooth...that is the way to go!
