An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

I'm off work this week which usually means I'm busier than when I'm at work I'm spending a lot of family time and getting some blacksmithing projects done since I am behind on that list.

Today's Shave: Shave #41 & 42

Razor: QShave (Merkur Futur Clone) DE
Blade: Gillette Rubie Plus
Brush: Maggard Razors Synthetic
Soap: Mystic Water Bay Rum
Bowl: Walmart Salsa Bowl (plastic)
Pre Shave: Shower / wash with soap
Total Razor on Face Time: 15 minutes

Post Shave: Cold water rinse, Witch Hazel (Walmart Brand) face only, Cold rinse, Dry face, then immediately applied Nivea AS Balm to the face only. Mammoth Painting.

So #41 was the first dance with Ms. Rubie, but given how much I really enjoy Gillette blades, I figured this one would be nice as well. After lathering up a nice bowl of the MW Bay Rum I was off....with Rubie. WTG pass felt rough to me, like the 2.5 setting on my razor was a lot more. Half way through this pass I decided to dial it back to 2.0 which was a good call. It still felt the blade seemed quite aggressive with the XTG / ATG passes. A little bit of redness resulted, but I was still BBS all over and felt my shave was great. Something I started doing is taking some of the mammoth painted soap from the chest and bringing it back up to the neck after all the WH and rinsing is finished. This really brings back some of the luxury of the soap to make my neck feel moisturized and nice post shave.

#42 was my second dance with Ms. Rubie. This time I set the razor at 2.2 or so and it still seemed aggressive but not as much as yesterday. All passes felt pretty great and I have a wonderful shave. I'm really enjoying bringing up that mammoth stored soap up to my neck post shave and before rinsing off the chest. The Bay Rum has powerful staying abilities when mammoth painting and I enjoy the scent for the whole day. Every time a puff of air fluffs up from under my shirt I get that nice Bay Rum scent.

On the personal side, I was able to get out in the snow with my girls and make them the Olaf snowman they've been asking for.

At first the Rubie seems way more aggressive but it is imho the best Gillette blade on the planet. I can get at least 15-20 shaves from them when i normally only get 7-10 from the rest. Second is the Silver Blues.

Hey, we were just talking about you! All good things, all good things …

Quick cart shave today due to hitting the road early to finish our Christmas shopping before the stores get crowded. Affirmative.....we are done. We try to finish Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving.

Great reading, as usual. I've never tried the Rubies. Love Olaf the Snowman. Very nice. Quality time with children is the best, for everyone!

Thanksgiving allowed me some extra shaving time and I really spent some time chasing the perfect shave.

Today's Shave: Shave #43

Razor: QShave (Merkur Futur Clone) DE
Blade: Gillette Rubie Plus
Brush: Maggard Razors Synthetic
Soap: Mystic Water Bay Rum
Bowl: Walmart Salsa Bowl (plastic)
Pre Shave: Shower / wash with soap
Total Razor on Face Time: 20 minutes

Post Shave: Cold water rinse, Witch Hazel (Walmart Brand) face only, Cold rinse, Dry face, then immediately applied Nivea AS Balm to the face only. Mammoth Painting, rubbing left over soap on the neck then rinsing.

Having more time I took it nice and slow with my first WTG pass. The Rubie is really finding it's pace now and is just right for my face when the razor is set at 2.0. Beautiful first pass as I enjoyed the luxury of the MW shaving soap. Both the XTG and ATG passes were very nice with the razor set at 2.3. Where I spent the extra time was in the clean-up. I chased every spot that wasn't perfect and blade buffed at about a 1.8 setting on the razor. What a perfect day to be thankful for a great shave. I could feel it a little when applying the WH post shave, but I got a perfect BBS / BBS+ shave that I enjoyed all day. Mammoth Painting allowed me to enjoy the scent all day even with the smells of turkey, apple pie, and homemade breads taking over the house. I sure was thankful that I found TSC and for everything many of you have done to help me get where I am today.

Today allowed for extra time shaving as well despite waking up to -7 degree temps outside. I decided to dive right into the samples I got from Mystic Water when I put my order in the other day.

Today's Shave: Shave #44

Razor: QShave (Merkur Futur Clone) DE
Blade: Gillette Rubie Plus
Brush: Maggard Razors Synthetic
Soap: Mystic Water Sweet Briar (sample)
Bowl: Walmart Salsa Bowl (plastic)
Pre Shave: Shower / wash with soap
Total Razor on Face Time: 15 minutes

Post Shave: Cold water rinse, Witch Hazel (Walmart Brand) face only, Cold rinse, Dry face, then immediately applied Nivea AS Balm to the face only. Mammoth Painting, rubbing left over soap on the neck then rinsing.

I love the smell of the Sweet Briar when sniffing the soap. Once lathered up, I pretty much lost the pipe tobacco notes and it mostly smelled like a fine soap to me. As usual, the MW soap lathered up great for me with the cold water and I had no problem whipping up a great bowl of luxury. After my extended shave yesterday, I could feel that things were a little bit sensitive so I had to use extra care not to push it to irritation.

My WTG pass with the razor set on 2.0 was great and felt great. XTG pass felt a little rough on the cheeks so I shifted the pass direction slightly and set the razor back to about 2.1 and it felt nicer. ATG pass was also a little rough and I had to use some extra care but came out ok in the end. I did a little bit of blade buffing setting the razor at 1.8 or so, but used restraint to not do as much as yesterday. Overall, BBS with a couple of missed areas being DFS+

Here's the long awaited picture of my shelf in the bathroom cabinet. I wouldn't call it a shaving den yet, but it's a start. So many things in there that I still have to try and will try over the next few months.

Wow Doc, I wish I could get that many shaves out of a blade. This is #4 on the Rubie and I'm normally chucking a blade after the 3rd shave so let's see how long this lasts. I'd love to find a blade that gave me 7 great shaves. I'd stop using all the others and us it exclusively. So far I"m really liking it and given the QShave razor you PIF'd me can be adjusted, I don't think the aggressive first couple of shaves will be a problem as I can just dial it back.
