2025 Eucris Lathering Challenge

I think this is a product that needs a boost. I’m going to give it another go with preshave and see because that was the best looking lather anybody has gotten yet around here.
It wasn’t a great load of Preshave either. But I have shaved with the cube by itself.

It seems strange to me that a glycerine based soap would need more glycerine from a pre-shave to work, but that seems to be the case here

22 Apr - Eucris test - Day 7

palm/face lather, badger brush

Used a badger brush today and had some of the best looking lather on my palm, at least it was kinda thick, but not very creamy. I tried to add a little water to it, and it just fell apart. lol.

I think I might try adding some glycerin to my next lather.

Ok. Today’s effort:

Synthetic brush. Damp puck and brush. Super long load (no counting just loading the brush until it looked like more than airy foam). Used PAA Cube Pre-shave on my face. Then applied to face with minimal agitation. Got a better lather than past few days, but still found it disappearing from my neck before I could get there to shave.

Adding additional products to increase the stability of the lather is probably the way to go here, but still far from ideal.

Oh great......the guy that only recently acquired more than 2 soaps....now has to buy additional products???? I miss the days when shaving only cost me a few cents per shave.

I have been loosly watching this thread (I almost joined but had other priorities) think it can't possibly be THAT hard to lather. Alas, it seems it IS that hard to lather. So I went to the trumpers website and took a look at the ingredients of Eucris and compared those ingredients to other Trumpers soaps that don't have a bad wrap. What I found was surprising. The ingredients of Eucris and most of the other soaps read like a typical bath/bar soap than a shaving soap. Trumpers DOES have 2 soaps that I have never seen that have an ingredient list that is more of what one might expect for a shaivng soap. Also interesting is the fact they describe Eucris as a "glycerin based soap" yet Eucris is the ONLY soap in their line up that does not include Glycerin in the ingredient list. *I suspect the website ingredient list is not accurate.

What is it about the ingredient list that makes me say this soap is more like a regular bath bar? Other than GFT's Oxford blue shaving soap and Officer and a Gentleman shaving soap, their hard soaps (based on the ingredient list) don't appear to be made using any for of Potasium Hydroxide, they appear to be made using only sodium hydroxide. This would of course make a super slick soap but also limit the ability to easily produce a creamy lather. Based purely on my interpretation of the ingredient list I would expect Eucris to lather similarly to a quality vegan bath soap.

I don't think I have ever encounterd a GFT soap so I have no personal experience to draw from. And I have been surprised by soap performance compared to ingredient lists before. For example, one of our own cadre artisans who is no longer in the business made an awesome soap using olive oil and olive oil is notorious for being a "lather killer" so base on the ingredient list alone I would have guessed it would be a poor performer. So take my thoughts with a grain of salt as they may be meaningless. As for me, I am on the lookout for the GFT Oxford Blue shaving soap, sounds interesting.

Dang it, Bob! I thought you put in the glycerin. Well, we better leave it out from now on or someone will know we screwed up this first batch."

@CBLindsay thanks for your insight on this product.

Here is the ingredient list from the back of the box. The puck we are all using came in this box.

YUP, the website ingredient list has left out the Glycerin. That makes more sense considering their other soaps have that ingredeint list. Supossedly James bond enjoyed Eucris when he wasn't enjoying Floris...just makes Bond even MORE awesome becasue he was able to lather the stuff.

So these may have had a reformulation, I have an old puck of Oxford Blue and a newer puck of Officer and Gentleman. Both are great mug soaps with a light and pleasant soap scent. The little Officer and Gentleman 56g puck lasted me for 127 shaves.

Here are the boxes from those soaps

It was actually the success I had with the Officer and Gentleman soap that inspired me to try and lather Eucris again, thus leading directly to this challenge.

If you want to get in, I’m sure one of the guys here wouldn’t mind sending you what’s left of their puck

EUREKA!

Building on previous success of the Preshave cube, I decided to use a proven good lathering soap to start and then add Eucris.
The base soap I selected was Stirling Hipster. To which I added a generous amount of grated Eucris.

He result was a terrific, pillowy lather!

Ok.. it was a full load of Stirling but hey, it worked great!
