2025 Eucris Lathering Challenge

15 Apr - Eucris lather test - Day 1

Synthetic Brush
Wet brush, Dry puck

Just went into to this like I would most soaps, as a baseline. Initial lather off puck was airy. Worked into a lather on my face. Lather was fairly thin, and did notice some dissipation. Little cushion, but fairly slick.

Second pass lather, worked on face a bit more, added some more water and lather thickened up a bit. Still some dissipation noted, but not as much as before.

Honestly, I have no complaints here. Does it lather as well as the artisan soaps we are used to? No, but it lathers better than some other soaps I've used. The dissipation was not nearly as much as I was expecting, given how everyone was talking about it. I was expecting it to disappear completely. Had I used this puck without any prior knowledge, I don't think It would have a notable thing. I don't spend a ton of time building lather no matter what I'm using, so i do not care about having a lush, thick whipped cream like lather. The lather that matters is what is right at the skin, anything sitting on top of that is wasted and useless. I had far more lather on my face than when I was doing my Williams longevity test. The slickness of Eucris is not as good as Williams, but isn't far behind.

I'm looking forward to doing more testing with this soap. Seign how it has performed today has given me some ideas about some things to try with it.

Eucris Day 1

So I have some history with this soap. I’ve used up a full puck. I always found it slick enough to shave with, and I enjoy the scent, but have never gotten a stable lather. It always comes out airy and pretty terrible honestly (See BDave or NDave videos in this thread for examples).

This time around I’m determined to do better.

The gear:
1/5 Eucris puck (I kept the portion that crumbled as I cut up the puck to share it with the others adventurers in this quest).
Shaving bowl (plan to load in a bowl and maybe try a bowl lather or two)

Synthetic brush - Wald A1 Calyx

Attempt #1
Drops of hot water over the puck, dry brush. Loaded until I got a thick paste on the brush. Then started to make circular swirls on my face. Very quickly got to the light airy stuff I’ve had in the past

Did my first pass with this stuff and it was slick enough to shave, but not lather.

For second pass I dipped the brush in water and decided to try only painting strokes on my face (avoiding adding any more air). This was an improvement. Kept going in this vein by adding water to the tips and painting it on my face and got a much more stable and thick lather for passes 2/3:

So tomorrow I will try to add as little air as possible, sticking to the painting strokes to see if that’s the secret here:

Lots of water, little soap, and avoid adding any air? Stay tuned

Dead Victorian bodies in a casket in a bottle… yummy
I get the funeral parlor-ish scent. I find the floral notes in it to be disagreeable. It's ok as a shave soap scent. I was hoping I'd like it enough to at least purchase the edt, but I can't wear that scent long term. I do find many of its notes similar to Aramis, Avon Oland, and Pinaud Special Reserve, which I do enjoy and wear on occasion.

16 Apr - Eucris test - Day 2

Shave stick approach, no brush

Today was inspired by my Williams longevity test. I thought of this based on how well Eucris performed based on slickness alone. I wet my face, rubbed the soap directly on my face, and proceeded to shave. The slickness alone carried the shave very well. For the second pass, all I did was slap little water on on my face and the residual slickness was enough for pass 2, and it was even better than pass 1. The first pass could have used some added water ontop of the soap, but I wanted to try it without.

I realize, this is not doing anything to help try to find a way to get good lather out of the soap, but I want to explore every aspect of the soap and test it out a multitude of different ways. I'm finding this soap to be very akin to Modern Williams. Many people have a hard time lathering it, and it eventually dissipates on your face, but regardless, the slickness of the soap carries the shave.

Looks like KJ and I had the same experience. I also used the Spider Williams method this morning. Tried to lather it up properly in a bowl but it was dissipating on the brush. So I grabbed the puck chunk and just rubbed it on my face and with a few drops of water on my hand....whipped up a half decent lather. Its not CBL quality lather but it was something akin to Williams. And it has plenty of slickness. And that was after all the glycerin leeched out of it. I'm saving the glycerin in a separate container for a later experiment.

Like KJ said....its not really a solution to the lather issue...but it gives you a bit of a lather to work with. And with that much slickness......it was a fine shave.

Day 2 - Fail

Transferred the soap to an Old Spice Mug (thanks KJ!) instead of chasing the small pieces around the larger bowl.

Put some water on the soap and loaded with a dry brush until I had some paste. Then began my experiment with using only painting strokes while adding water as I went. Started off great, getting some sheen and what was looking to be a good lather.

Then…

Muscle memory took over in a moment of distraction and before I knew it, I had done some circular strokes to build volume (like I do every morning). Well that added too much air and killed whatever it was that I had started. Got a good shave from slickness but had nothing but airy dissipating lather.
