Nurse Dave's Journal

I don't normally count my chickens before they hatch. Plus the times for the game weren't posted before the end of the season....so it was a new development.
Well, the ended to our challenge was a new development to. It will change your world. 🤯

So I guess we're almost there with the kitchen and I a little bit fired the contractor? Dude's attitude as been getting increasing more irritating to deal with. Yes, he's called in favors to get our project done sooner than usual (according to him) and saved us money by not marking things up he buys and having us deal directly with retailers using his showroom discount. But also started acting like that's a reason we shouldn't ever question anything or ask when something would be done. The last minor steps have been dragging on since Wednesday of last week. THE final one was install of the handles which we didn't buy from a place he recommended because all those handles were like $18 and up per. And not all that exciting if you ask me. I ordered what I thought was cool from overseas and heard his irritation of them many times. Turns out the size of screw they sent isn't the right length for the doors or the drawers and is metric! Can you believe that?!!? Metric! Luckily for us, he was able to find some stuff that would work on the doors, but not the drawers and had to hear him moaning again. I finally said, if he just finished drilling all the holes, I'll go look for the right screws, or just grind down the ones that came with it. Guy couldn't really complain any more. He ended up leaving not finishing drilling all the holes, and just leaving the templates and a drill bit behind. So this evening I'll be off on what I can only think of like a left-handed crescent wrench hunt looking for metric screws!

Finding the needed screws yesterday was a easy as it could have been. Went to OSH, dude put the bolt into a jig they had to determine the size, I told him how long I needed and a little hunting for the right drawers I had my pick of sizes in 2mm increments. Our (ex)contractor mentioned he had talked to a cabinet guy that said he did a job where he had to grind down ever screw for the handles to get them to fit. Like literally WTH? Seems like the time spent driving to get the right size would be less than the time to do that, but whatever. I get home and start in on installing the handles. Quickly found my holes looked professional because I would counter drill the backside to make them look perfect as opposed to those the contractor did with blowout on the backside. I mean I get my way took like a minute per hole and his way took like 5-10 seconds. There's a way you do things. So handles are all installed. Drawers and cabinets are mostly filled. We pulled up the construction paper that's been covering the floor since before we moved in. Today we need to clear off the dining table and remove the paper from under it (it's super heavy) and make sure the chairs all have pads under all the legs. This weekend I might even make a pour-over coffee with my eggs. There is still some long term work to be done. Need to fill the nail holes of the new trim and paint, paint the ceiling and likely repaint the dining room.

I think if we're motivated enough, this weekend will be a complete reorg of the storage shed and garage. I want all the Christmas stuff out in the shed, all my wife's craft stuff in the garage and know what kind of storage type units we need to buy to be as organized as possible.

Nice varied weekend. Friday the kitchen/dining was basically put into service. More boxes unpacked, the floor uncovered, and pads put on all the chair legs. Saturday was refilling the yard waste bin, cleaning out some of the gutters and a large project of reorganizing the shed and the garage. My wife's craft stuff is all in the garage now until we take over the 3rd bedroom and turn it into guest/craft room. All the Christmas stuff in the shed. And I just need one of those roller units that you slide the big plastic tubs into. Then everything should be off the floor in the garage yet I can move things around when needed. One bummer is my wife has a rug brough from Iran that got what we learned was moth damage at the other house as we kept it down stairs. The estimate to repair it was into the hefty 4 figures, so that's not going to happen. Then as I was moving some of my sports jackets from my closed into the garage clothing storage I found out 4 of those also were ruined from moth damage as they were also down stairs at the other house. Life goes on. Saturday was also our anniversary and given all that's been going on, we didn't get each other anything so my wife made reservations at a restaurant we've been wanting to go to. It was a very nice night with good food all around and a couple personal encounters with Tyler Florence. I also tasted a gin infused to earl grey tea. After our next trip, I'll be ordering some to be shipped as it doesn't appear to be sold locally. They do have the same brand with other teas, but earl grey is where it's at. Sunday was more chill with some cleaning, puttering, photos of the kitchen, and a nice cadre Zoom call.

Okay, these Wilkinson blades just aren't sharp enough for my liking. I think I don't have a ton of them, but they may not get all used up. Yesterday we found out that the counter top material we chose shows stains super easy and needs to be sealed again. Nice expert come over and spent 30min working on them and telling us what we needed to use. No charge! He also mentioned that next to the stove we really should have silicone covering them since hot oil will soak in immediately. So silicone has been ordered. The cleaning and sealing will happen when we're back. Which brings us to us leaving on a trip that's been planned for 18 months. This will be an interesting one since it's our first time in any of the cities we're going to and first time on this cruise line and we have done next to no planning. Oddly enough we're both in the mood for a "whatever" and "go with the flow" vacation. I'll likely have pictures posted from the whole cruise before we even hear about Steven's 2nd day. We're mostly doing the same route that guy did, except the opposite direction.
