Ghost Town Barber AS
The Process-
Had a bit of trouble sleeping last night and I got up before the sunrise today. I don't have the work wages this week for a trip into town, so I shaved at home. I usually shave at sun up with the fresh sunlight pouring down over the hillside, but today it was candle light. The missus was not up yet to light the wood stove, so it was cold water in the bowl this morning. Went ahead and started the fire for coffee after my shave. Grabbed my shaving gear, bowl of water and a towel and headed to the kitchen table. I grabbed the old boar brush that has been in my family as long as I can remember, dipped it into the water and went to the soap. I rubbed the soap for about half a minute and started whipping up a lather. I don't usually use that much soap, but today I wasn't too concerned. This is a soap that the missus picked up from the General Store and it has a nice light scent. It also feels better on the skin than our homemade soap. A nice luxury on occasion. I also had a lot of lather which was really nice, but it seemed wasteful. But as I mentioned earlier, no worries about that today.
I have an old leather strop that hangs in the kitchen. It was part of an old, broken cinch strap off my saddle that has found a new purpose. It may be old and tattered some, but it works well on knives, my razor and for keeping the children on the right path. Ran the razor across the strop for forty laps and I was ready to shave. I normally just go with one quick pass to knock most of the hair off, but today was different. Today I shaved three passes of WTG, XTG and ATG and didn't cut myself. It was a very nice shave that would rival our barber in town. And best of all, my face is baby butt smooth.
Rinsed off with a bit of water from my bowl and quickly patted my face dry. A healthy splash of the aftershave and I am ready for the task at hand. Something is coming. There is a storm building off in the distance and I can feel it. I hope my humble homestead can weather this one, but only time will tell. I am not as young as I once was, but I will rebuild if I have too. Whether I care to or not, it's times to strap on the revolver and head out. Let's see what's over that rise.
