Youtube shaving drama...

Aomalley27

Shave Newbie
Anyone else seen this new shaving drama on YouTube. At least three content creators were dropped by an artisan, and one posted a rather scathing video decrying the whole thing. Here's
my problem; however, nothing verifiable was produced (to date at least) to corroborate the claims. I'm not saying the claims aren't true, but you'd think the parties involved would at least produce
some text messages, emails, or voice recordings to substantiate the claims. The one content creator went so far as to speculate the artisan was either a bipolar, an addict or an alcoholic. (I think that part was in incredibly poor taste. It may be true, I leave that possibility open, but to publicly speculate that without any proof, is an egregious act). The artisan then posted a rebuttal video claiming the content creator was, for lack of a better term, I'll describe it as a "shake down" for some sort of compensation for his reviews, either a payment or an affiliate program to receive a portion of sales. This is also a big accusation, and without posting any messages, emails, or audio to corroborate this, is pretty egregious to just float out there. At this point, I just see this conflict as a He said, she said squabble. (Well, it's more accurately a He said, HE, He, and He said, since it's the artisan and three content creators). It also amazes me how quickly people just to conclusions and pick sides without anything concrete, and just a person's own take on the matter. Barring a family member (and even then, I have a few family members whose word I find dubious because of past actions), I leave the possibility that the content creators could be 100% accurate in their depiction of the conflict, the artisan could be totally accurate in his view of the conflict, or more likely it falls somewhere in between. I just think it's a real bad look for all parties involved to present their side as fact, yet produce nothing to verify it.

My favorite Youtube shaver had a falling out with Sapponificio Varensino; was quite open about that falling out, but never made accusations. (I'm fairly confident he would produce some evidence of any accusations if he had) He simply states they had a difference of opinion on give away samples, and they parted ways. No allusions or shadowy/vague remarks, just opens ip, states what he saw as a conflict of interests between himself and the Soap supplier, and leaves it at that. It's still his favorite soap brand too. No "I'm never touching that stuff again" or other such silliness. Shame to see it happen, because I was enjoying the content of all 3 creators.

I pretty much stopped watching shaving content on YT. I only tune in to the members here that create videos. I used to make videos myself and did enjoy it, but it became a time thing for me.

But I absolutely abhor the drama, and will avoid it at all costs. The Shaving Cadre was created due to drama at another site. We live peacefully here and don't engage the drama.

Can't say I am aware of the drama you speak of, I haven't followed or watched a shaving "content creator" since Nick Shaves. I pretty much limit my watching to content created by TSC members posted here on the forum. To be honest the whole "influencer" and "content creator" thing has me baffled and more than a little bit disillusioned about the world we live in ...but that is a different topic and one I feel I could not express my true feeelings about without making people cry. I will say however that whether they be artisan or content creator, anyone who would choose to air grievences and foment drama publically as you describe would certainly lose my respect. Likewise, those that are able to rise above the issue and move on are more desrving of my respect.

You being a manufacturer/artisan, would be better able to comment on this than me; but is it unreasonable to drop a influencer if you don't see the return on free goods your giving them in relation to increased sales? From all I've seen, THAT is the crux of the drama. Apparently Artisan stopped sending them free product. And then responded to one of the "content creators" that "I don't feel we are a good fit". Apparently that was something akin to a punch in the face or some other massive insult/fighting words. It boggles my mind how seemingly frail some people are nowadays. Unless there was something else said in private, (and I don't believe there was, as the creator only sighted this specific comment for his rage) this is the ultimate is overreaction.

Like Spider and CBLindsay, I don't really watch any YT shaving content other than TSC members, so I have no knowledge of the situation but it seems like both sides are being a little petty.

I always leave the possibility of more to the story. With the outright rage they had, I'd like to think it was something more than just no longer getting free soap. I've seen Barber Dave get peeved over trolls. But I've never seem him outright rage. So I figured these guys must've had a really bad interaction. But all they've stated to date is the free soap, and possibly being pressured to give artificially inflated/positive reviews. Hardly the stuff that would light my fuse. Guess we'll see if something else comes to light.

I think my opinion is shared by many others…I don’t believe an artisan should be GIVING free products in exchange for influencer reviews etc. If I want to pay someone to promote my products via advertising it should be clear to ALL who view it that I have paid for promotion. That’s the problem as I see it (at least in the artisan shaving world), how can you as a consumer trust an “oppinion” given by an influencer when the influencer never paid for the product and has a financial incentive to give positive reviews. Your description of the drama is a clear example of the point. The artisan dropped the influencer for telling the truth? Or the influencer lied because he no longer gets free stuff? How can either one be trusted to tell me what I should spend my money on.

I have had many reviews, formal and informal of my products and every one of them from a person who paid for the product. It is true a few of my VERY loyal customers may get discounts but they never get free products to review unless I am asking them purely for feedback on something I might be working on. I think most of the reviews I’ve seen have been pretty honest but I KNOW none of them were coerced or bought with free product.

I understand that some have chosen to make a business of selling their ‘opinion’ to viewers but, like I said before different topic for a different day. I for one prefer being influenced and informed by those who actually purchase and use the products they talk about.

This info might be best shared by PM rather than open forum @Aomalley27. No reason to bring the drama here…but it is worth a conversation about the subject itself rather than the people involved
Already thought of that. That's why I intentionally omitted names in the OP. But thanks for the reminder. Oh, and while I've got you, any plans for another witch hazel scent? I gotta wait til after Christmas to make more shaving purchases, but Barber Dave's videos convinced me I've gotta pick up Cuebebe and a few of your soaps.

I will agree with everything that Chris has said.

I am crazy for CBL Soap, and place its performance above all others. But Chris has never provided me free product for any review. He has, as he indicated, provided me with free samples, but those were for the sake of testing, or trying out certain scents. I was a fan of his product long before that.

I also despise of channels that use their popularity as a way to get free product or money from YouTube. I prefer to watch channels that are honest and organic. Many times you see channels where a YouTuber will get items for free, and you see (whether they say it or not) they are influenced. That is what drives a steak in all of social media to me. It makes me really evaluate every single reel or tic-toc I watch to see if it is an earnest evaluation by the poster…. Or just an attempt to gain further views, and in the end, more money.
That is super easy to determine after just a few views!

I don’t think I will do another with hazel scent but I do still have some of the cubebe witch hazel (although its older stock by now) which is pretty cool stuff. I only did the witch hazel stuff because a couple of guys here on the forum were really enjoying their premium witch hazels so I thought I would give it a go. I went with listea cubebe and a few different Hydrosols because they smell great and are known to be good for the skin (and @BarberDave loves litsea cubebe). In the end the project proved to be more expensive than I had anticipated (which explains why premium witch hazel is so much more expensive than generic stuff. ….all of that said, if I manage to score some good WH at a great price I might do something.
