Vintage Colgate "Cup" Soap

I suspect that’s older than the one I’m using but probably as good or better. The CUP soap predated the MUG soap, I have heard the CUP is better/best but I’ve not tried the mug version. I like it. Give it a short soak and it’s good to go.

Chris is right. The cup is an older formula which is much better than the mug soap. Nice score. I'm suffering from vintage soap envy.

I thought it was the older version.

Roger that. I actually went ahead and gave this a test lather a little while ago. I let it soak for 10 minutes, then took a boar brush to it. I was amazed that it lathered effortlessly! Holy smokes - I'm really looking forward to using this for my next shave!

And speaking of "vintage soap envy", I have another vintage soap en route that is one I've never heard of: a NOS puck of Wrisley Saddle Club shaving soap in wooden bowl. I've read that it is quite similar to the old Yardley soap that everyone talks about. I haven't tried vintage Yardley as it commands a premium price these days that I'm not willing to pay thus far. I'll be interested to see how this Wrisley performs.

I’ve got an extensive collection of vintage soaps, including wrisley and yardley. I enjoy restoring the old wood bowls. One of my prized possessions is a NOS Williams wood bowl with untouched soap. I have two bowls with Williams but only one is new. I’m amazed at how well the vintage stuff lathers.

Oh yes, you are definitely the vintage soap king, no doubt! I don't recall ever seeing a picture of that NOS Williams wood bowl w/soap. Perhaps you could post one.

Also, what did you think of the Wrisley?

I’ll dig out my vintage stuff and post a picture or two. The wristley and MacGregor are very close, both make a great lather that is capable of being wet or fluffy. I am inclined to think yardley is still better BUT not significantly. Of course none of the vintage soaps are scented with anything other than old age and mold spores...I LOVE the smell of an old soap. I’ve got a few unknown vintage soaps (no label so I don’t know) that perform well, leadings me to believe there isn’t a bad vintage soap. Maybe Paisley, cool bowl but meh performance.

Mmmmmm.... mold spores! LOL, I love the smell of old soap as well. I use a lot of vintage Williams and Old Spice soap and it's so amazing. It's really unlike anything that is made today. So creamy. I actually had one puck of Williams Menthol that had some scent left. No menthol feel, but a tiny bit of scent. Unfortunately, that only lasted a couple shaves. But it was quite an experience.
