Shave Newbie
Perhaps the best way to introduce myself is 1/20th history and 19/20th current shaving status.
Historically, I have been deeply entrenched in rabbit holes: colonial paper currency, high-end and customized flashlights, .22 LR target shooting and a high-end knife collection. As for shaving, after learning in the 1960s on Gillettes, Schicks, canned foam and Old Spice, I Mach 3ed myself from the late 1990s until March 2022.
Currently, my wet shaving ROTATIONS are:
Pre-Shave - Grooming Dept.
Soaps - Proraso Red tub, Barrister & Mann Nordost Smoked Orange and The Body Shop's Maca Root & Aloe Shave Cream. Have a few dozen others awaiting their turns.
Bowl - Marble.
Brushes - Simpson's Trafalgar T1, Yaqi Sagrada Familia, Simpsons Duke 3, APShaveco Synbad, Razorock Plissoft Disruptor, Muhle STF, and Semogue Owners Club Mistura. Tried, but did not enjoy, horse hair and boar. I do not splay, favoring dobbing with tips and painting, therefore choosing dense, small and short brushes.
Razors - Gamechanger (.68 & .94), The Winning Razor, Yates 921 SS ( M & H), Karve Overlander Brass and Gillette Slim (1967) from Backroads Gold. Vintage Krona and Gillette Tech didn't work for me. Really enjoy varying these tools. Keeps my technique fresh. Favor heavy razors. Lupo 58 SB incoming.
Blades - After sampling ~ 20 different brands/types, have settled upon Wizamet, Nacet, and GSB. 7 O'Clock Blacks have been a recent discovery.
Aftershaves - Witch Hazel followed by one of five splashes from soap makers.
Techniques - Mapped face, two passes (with and against) with buffing, slow and short strokes, allow razor to determine angle and don't chase BBS on every shave.
What I have/use in equipment is infinitesimal compared to the wealth of wisdom, experiences, generosity and good graces of various wet shaving forums' members.
Thank you for having me here.
