Summer Scents

It is officially Summer I know it is a little late. But what do you use in the Summer?

Fruity scents? High amounts of menthol? Minty? Fougere? Vetiver? What is it?

Today I used the new scent from Soap Commander, this one is a winner on the scent for sure!

Captain's Choice 45th
Chiseled Face Easy Street
Truefitt & Hill West Indian Limes
Wholly Kaw Fern Concerto

Those are the type of scents I'll use much more often in the heat than in the winter.

There are a couple of go to fragrance profiles I try to stick to for the most part during the summer...

Citrus / Colonia type scents (good in spring/fall)
Fougere's (good for spring and fall as well)
Mentholated soaps
Tropical soaps
Beach vibe soaps
Barbershops (year round)

Any mixture, for the most part, during the hotter months is a good thing.

For the most part, I try and stay away from woody, leather, tobacco scented stuff. So as of right now, my favorite summer soaps are:

B&M Adagio (hands down my favorite)
Declaration Champs de Lavande, Pure Lavender
Fine Italian Citrus
Nuavia Verde
MdC fougere and original
Stirling Iced Pineapple, Satsuma, Piacenza
Wholly Kaw Fern Concerto
S.V. Opuntia, Stella Alpina (haven't tried 70th yet, but I would imagine this would make the list)
The Holy Black Creeper series
A&E SoCal Hipster, (little fictions), L'Orange Verte

Wouldn't be a worry if we lived in Texas or Florida...but I like the Sandalwood and Oud scents as well. They don't play well in the heat.

I don't subscribe to the seasonal scent. Only exception might be if the scent smells like a Christmas Tree.

That being said, I am always baffled by the idea that Bay Rum is not a summer scent. Come on...really? A scent profile invented by pirates for pirates and privateers! A scent made for a man of the tropics! If there was ever a summer scent...it is Bay Rum. So what is my Summer scent?

BAY RUM

You said it Don! I’m not a seasonal guy either. Every scent gets an equal opportunity for a given shave, no matter what time of year it is.

But there are a few scents I at least think about a little more in the summer, and bay rum is among them. Also Lime and Coconut scents.

HUZZAH! I love Bay Rum scents, though I don't have many of them. Hmm, might need to do something about that. There are a few scents that I do prefer in Summer, some due to menthol content and others that just smell even better in the heat.

B&M Adagio(one of my favorite all-time scents and perfect for a hot Summer morning)
Captain's Choice 45th parallel
Stirling Iced Pineapple!
I Coloniali
Esbjerg Grapfruit

There are others, but those probably top the list.

I don't really do seasonal scents but may lean towards
Stirling-Orange Chill
B&M-First Snow
B&M-Promises
Captains Choice-45th Parallel
Stirling-MITA

I’m an equal opportunity soap user! If it’s in my den and I wanna smell like it then that’s my choice for the shave that day.

In the Summer we would sometimes visit my Sicilian Grandparents in Fresno, California. My Grandparents maintained a beautiful garden in their yard with a fig tree and a grape arbor through which the sun would filter in midday. Among other things, my Grandpa, who was a dead ringer for Al Pacino in the Godfather, also ran a small farm. So I remember the sights and scents from that verdant garden and the farm during visits with my Grandparents. Today, I used the newly released Tallow & Steel Sicily soap and aftershave for the first time and the scent took me on a magic carpet ride to a similar verdant garden in Sicily, Italy. In this garden there is citrus with bushes loaded with blood orange and lemon and nearby rows of green tinged herbs of rosemary, lavender and bergamot. When you grow herbs and pick them fresh from your garden the scent radiates from your hand. Similarly, freshly picked citrus offers a scent explosion from any portion of your body it touches. Such a garden does not exist in the Fall or Winter at least in my imagination. Here it is warmer, Spring and Summer.

except that I misclassified bergamot essential oil which is derived from the bitter skin of the bergamot orange, a citrus fruit.

Here's my lineup for this summer:
CBL Ghost Pineapple
Dendi Orange Mint
Stirling Lemon Glacial
Haslinger Aloe Vera
Wilkinson Sword Cream
Noble Otter Monarch

I do tend to use more citrus scents in the summer. One of my favorites is TOBS Grapefruit. It smells exactly like grapefruit to me. So much that I want to take a big bite of it. Unfortunately grapefruit and my blood pressure meds don't play well with each other so I forgo one of my favorite things. But I can shave with it. I really need to get off my butt, drop some weight and get off the meds. My favorite breakfast used to include a half a grapefruit, two eggs over easy, multi grain toast, coffee and orange juice. Or I might have some yogurt with fresh blueberries instead of the eggs and toast. But I digress. I also like TOBS Eton College which has a distinctly citrusy scent. But I also have to say I'll use my barbershop type scents all year long as well. I generally shy away from menthol at any time of year but I do have one soap, Van Yulay Into The Woods, that has menthol in it and I tend to only use it in the summer.
