Seeking Recommendations for Sandalwood Shaving Soap

My brief review of recommendations for Sandalwood scented soaps on a different forum yielded recommendations for Sandalwoods scented shaving soaps. The gold standard appears to have been the old Art of Shaving Sandalwood tallow based soap which is no longer made. Other recommendations were for Fine Santal Absolut, the no longer available Santal Auster which I believe was from Declaration Grooming/Chatillon Lux and WSP Sandalwood.

It also appears that soapmakers are not using Mysore Sandalwood because of the cost. Instead they are using fragrance oils or essential oils from other types of Sandalwood. I have some Grooming Dept Sandalwood Nobile, which apparently fits under this category, on the way.

I would love to find a good sandalwood scented tallow based soap with real Mysore Sandalwood. Does anyone have any recommendations? Short of that, any recommendation for a nice tallow Sandalwood scented soap.

I also wonder what it would take for CBL or LNHC to create a real Sandalwood soap at a premium price.

Did you actually get to try Fine Santal Absolut? AOS scenting with Tabac performance, that’s what I’d go for.

It’s a shame that so few (if any?) folks list the actual oils used.

Now we just have to wait for him to cruise thru again..................Oh Gleeennnn 🤪
Dear Saint David,

Thanks buddy. PM sent.

We are currently camping at Birch Bay, Washington, a stone's throw from Canada. I sent you our General Delivery address for Sequim, WA on the Olympic Peninsula where we will be attending the Sequim Lavender Festival next weekend.

Actually, @Dave in KY has stepped up and solved my problem.

I have not yet ordered any yet but Fine and WSP would have been the two I would consider at this point. I have a logistical problem ordering anything because we are always moving around in our RV during much of the year until we reach our home base in Florida in November. In order to order anything when we are moving, I have to try and time it up with General Delivery in a town where we intend to be in a few days.

I am going to see what Chris or Lisa say about making up a batch when I get back to Florida. Chris had a really nice Rosa Bourbonia using expensive oil which he sold in a reduced 3 oz. size for his regular price. I really like the concept of selling a soap with a nice oil in a reduced size since I have a hard time getting through my 4 or 5 oz. soaps. So what do you think--2 oz. of a soap scented with a costly but real oil like Mysore Sandalwood? Definitely a different business model.

I had a really nice rose garden when I owned a home in Walnut Creek, CA. Different roses have different scents and some have none at all. I can tell you that the scent oil Chris used was the real stuff from, I presume, bourbon roses. It certainly has that scent, to my nose anyway. When I use it, I travel back to those days when I would take a whiff from a rose or two as I watered them in the Summer. I think you are lucky living in the Sacramento area where you can grow a lot of things including roses.

Real sandalwood oil (quality stuff) is a bit like oud in that it can be pretty expensive stuff. In the little experimenting I’ve done I’ve found very little consistency between products, they each smell very differently depending on origin. I’m personally very picky about which sandalwood I will use. I don’t like Fine’s version, it’s SUPER strong (which is great) but not my favorite kind of sandalwood. D.R. Harris on the other hand has a Sandalwood that is right up my alley. Stirling @Joe Hackett sent a sample of his sandalwood edt to me and it’s not like the D.R. Harris but I like it enough I would probably enjoy a soap in that scent. I was able to locate a potentially source of Mysore sandalwood oil, i’ll Start working that angle to see what I can do.

Dude...when traveling...coordinate with your local Cadre and have your shaving wares sent to them. You can then have a nice coffee, tea, or adult beverage with that Cadre member and pick up your shaving goods! 🤪 If ever in the southern Louisiana area...feel free to do this...I will accommodate as best I can! That isif I am not out of town becasue of some sort of hurricane issues! 🙂

Yep. Real Sandalwood starts at 1500 a pound and just goes up from there. I chuckle when I see soaps that advertise being made with real Australian Sandalwood with a price tag that doesn't fit. Maybe they added 1 drop per batch. 😅

This is a great idea that is way under utilized. It’s not always doable but at a minimum it’s worth trying to coordinate what can be coordinated.
