Rhodium v Nickel Comparison

I found this pic while cleaning out a folder and thought it'd be a good share. I had a customer who was curious as to what rhodium and nickel look like side by side. As you can see, the rhodium is much brighter and the nickel has an almost tan hue to it. I like rhodium (especially on specific razors), but fresh nickel plating is really gorgeous. I'm especially fond of the matte finish.

Which one do you prefer?

I prefer Rhodium and got it on my Fatboy. I learned that it can cause some issues with the mechanism until things are worked over and over to smooth it out. If I did it again I would probably go with the Nickel as even though it doesn't shine as much when you hold them side by side, it is gorgeous on it's own. Just my thoughts after having mine done in Rhodium. I could be wrong but it felt lighter after getting redone as well. I'm curious if there is a difference in weight dependent on which you choose. Maybe it was loss of weight from getting all the gunk out/off of it 😂

I know there is a difference in weight there, but after a quick search I couldn't find what the exact numbers are. Maybe someone else knows. Removing the gunk would definitely make it lighter.

They are both beautiful in the matte finish. It’s a close call, but I would go with the nickel plating. Nickel just has that “classic” look on a vintage razor.
I’d go with Nickel, more of a classic vibe.

Definitely has that classic vibe going. Especially in the matte finish. If you're going matte...nickel is the way to go IMO. Matte is just kind of lost on the rhodium.

On the weight difference I don't think so but I could be wrong because if you are refinishing some brass razors I think you have to first lay down a coat of Nickel and then the Rhodium. I think this thread needs Chris from Razorplate.com as a new member. As far as I'm concerned he's the best in the business at replating a razor and the combo of Captain Murphy aka Cap & Chris are two guys that I'd send any razor out to with confidence and I have more than a few times with excellent results. I'm going to message Chris on Monday and see if he would join. His input is excellent when it comes to plating a razor and the whys and how to do's.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Great Shaves!

GREAT idea. Tried to get him awhile back but he was on hiatus at the time (y)

I'm good friends with Chris & Cap Dave and talk to both of them at least every other month so yes I'm going to ask them to join. Cap is sometimes difficult to get right away because he gets deployed as he's a Navy special ops diver full time and has no communication with anyone on the outside as his missions are highly classified. Both good human beings who know their craft well and I know they'd be an big asset on here.

I edited my post after you quoted me. I should have clarified, I didn't invite him here. Was getting in touch about a razor when he was on hiatus so went elsewhere. Hope he joins up (y)

I like the look of Nickel more as well.

Probably not the right place to ask, but I've always wondered if it can cause allergic reactions, similarly to the nickel in gold rings.

That would be surprising given the limited time contact it has with your skin vs a ring.

I prefer the Nickel. Side by side, the Rhodium looks fake. Like a fake diamond, it's just too perfect.
