For the longest time, I stayed away from the huge influx of artisan soaps. I’ve been doing this whole wet shaving thing for over 8 years and can remember a time when there were really just a handful of artisans. The Three Sues being the primary Players: Honeybee Soaps, Saint Charles Shave, and Mama Bear Soaps.

When the era of Queen Charlotte, Stirling, Mike’s, Mystic Water, and similar came onto the scene, I think there was a big swing in perception. Before artisans were just something use use along with your commercial soaps. But with this new influx of artisans, it seems that folks started to favor artisan soaps over commercial, or at least equal at that point. This is where I found happiness and near Shave soap Nirvana with Mystic Water and Stirling. A couple years passed, with a couple new players, but no real advancement of soaps occurred.

Then a few years ago, Shave soap just exploded. New ingredients, maybe new techniques, new ideas, and tons of new artisans burst onto the scene. For me, it was too much too fast. I rejected them all. I was quite happy where I was and with what I was using.

Over the last year, or less, it seems to have died down a bit, and settled. So I began to wonder, which soaps were out there, that are still in business, and were the new ‘best’ soaps, and was I missing out on anything. Through samples, and trades, and PIFs, I have been able to try most of what most top reviewers would consider their top 5. I agree with some, but not others.

Enter CBL... I’m absolutely amazed by CBL Soaps. I find them as good, or better than absolutely everything that I have ever tried. From the experience that I have had in using Chris’s soaps, my desire to sample and explore new soaps is all but extinguished. I see no need to explore further, as I’m beyond satisfied with what I’m getting from them.

Ive chosen to be more selective than diversified in my choices, so I have chosen certain soaps for certain reasons. Yes, I know I’m skipping out on top performing soaps, but CBL is my top performing soap and I’m happy with it.

So here is my list of soaps, that I will continue to use and support:

CBL Soaps
Mystic Water
Jeeves of Hudson Street
Stirling
Saint Charles Shave
Honeybee Soaps

I may explore a little outside these 6 if a scent strikes me. But this is where I am happy. I have struck a balance of performance and value, which I am happy with.

So far I am agreeing with you on the top two for sure. I too was a Mystic fan boy for a long time. Had the best of everything I wanted. Then I got some soap from Chris and it was just amazing. The post shave on Mystic was just a little better, but Chris has told me that he has since reformulated to make it better. Got my fingers crossed because that package should be here in about an hour. If it's true, then it is definitely my new elite.

I absolutely have CBL, Mystic Waters, Stirling, and Honeybee in my top ten. I sadly can not use Saint Charles because for some reason that soap lathers beautifully at my house then vanishes, like "POOF" gone from the bowl. Have never tried anything by Jeeves of Hudson Street so I cant comment there but nothing wrong with picking a few and being loyal.

Hard to argue with that list. But I would add Dec. Grooming and Lisa's to it. I am also very tempted by the Noble Otter. I will be buying a full puck soon.

Two soaps I also really like that aren't being talked about as much as of late are Longrifle and Wild West Shaving.

I have a problem.

The CBL soap is absolutely one of the best out there right now! This isn't even debatable. I just hope others outside of TSC will pick up on how good it is! I am also high on A&E...it is an excellent soap...put it is also an experience that puts it above others in my book. Mystic Water is definitely on top also. Others include Wholly Kaw w/ Donkey Milk and Declaration Grooming in the Icarus Base. Noble Otter deserves a place at the table also as well as our very own Lisa's Natural Herbal Creations. Not sure which ones need to be ranked closer to the top of this list...but they are all VERY close! I guess that is about seven...but you guys get the idea.

I still haven't gotten the chance to try Lisa's yet. Her Somali Rose is on my short list.

Ive tried a couple A&E samples and they didn’t perform exceptionally for me. WK is the one I haven’t explored much, I do have a sample in waiting still. DG is good, just not better than CBL. I recall trying a sample that you sent me and being underwhelmed by it, then you telling me it was the Icarus base. I was shocked. Noble otter is good, between MW and CBL, the scents just don’t appeal to me. And Lisa’s is by far the most moisturizing soap I’ve ever used. It just lacks in slickness for me.

Well quitting the search sounds boring to me but glad you have your field narrowed to a happy place.
I was actually finding the process of trying out new soaps and samples overwhelming. I still have tons of different soaps in my den to use, not just those 6.

We all go through our phases

Indeed. ADs always go through phases.

I definitely agree that this soap is something special. It sits right near the top for me, along with Wild West Shaving Co. , Phoenix and Beau, and Grooming Dept.

I need to get some. Trying to decide between Dragons Blood or the Ghost Lime. Thoughts? Description of each?

Seriously? you are asking this bunch an either/or question about shave soap? Um...standard answer is going to be...BUY THEM BOTH!!!

Do you like strong or subtle scents? The lime is just lime, but I think it on the weaker side.

Dragons Blood is strongly scented. Warm, earthy, ambery, incensy. And there’s only 1 left in stock, so if you want it, jump on it.

But really, get both!

In order of discovery:

Mike's
Local Gent
Soapy Science
CBL

These all meet my needs very nicely, also striking a balance of price and performance. I can pay $5+ more for soaps that may be better, but are they $5 better? Not to me.

Unfortunately I haven`t opportunity to try these artisan soaps, except a Mystic water sample, but I believe they are really good ?

CBL is definitely in my top 3. The others for me are A&E and Declaration Grooming. There are also many that I haven't tried, but I will get to them eventually. Right now, the AD I have is much more expensive and not related to shaving.
